I went to ride my mare Trudy today and she wouldn't take ! step I did some ground work with her before I got on her and she did Great but the second I get on her she refuses to do anything. I kicked her as hard as I could, tried to back her up, tried to turn her and she wouldn't do anything. about to say forget it and sell her

Sounds to me like she has your number. Have you thought about a trainer?

I don't have the extra money to have a trainer. but I asked a few people and they all said the same thing to try an over and under and if that doesn't work try bumper spurs

Two questions...
1) is this a "broke" horse or a "green" horse?
2) Have you tried having someone else on the ground or on another horse lead her around while you are on her?

Why would you say the horse has her number? Sometimes cant a horse just be a jerk? So by getting on the horse and expecting it to walk forward is a huge expectation? Im sorry but some horses are just a pain and I get tired of other people thinking...;oh, I bet I can make the horse do anything I ask it"....sometimes it is what it is

So this is a horse that you run barrels and rope off of? So if shes a broke horse then shes trying to tell you something, or you cinching her to tight?

So, obviously this mare knows how to move under saddle. Then I agree with others, i dont think she has your number, I think something is hurting her and shes trying to tell you that. So, as you probably know, you dont want to make this a negative experience. Will she lunge under the saddle you are riding her in? Or does she lock up once shes saddled and snugged up?
Side thought, have you had her teeth done? Have you tried riding her with out something in her mouth? If the bit is hitting her teeth that could also be a cause.

I would start ruling out all of the tack and then start checking her body. If I remember she's somewhere in the 4 or 5 year old range, right? If so then she's still growing and hopefully it is something simple like a saddle not sitting/ fitting right. Hopefully she doesn't have anything major wrong. I'm anxious to hear how she does without something in her mouth.

Sounds like a pain issue on the horses end along with a lack of experience issue on the riders end. Get your horse checked by your vet and a chiropractor. When is the last time her teeth have been floated? Once you have taken care of your horse, check your gear out. Is there anything on the bottom of your pad that might be irritating your horses back? Does your saddle fit your horse correctly?

Kicking your horse as hard as you can, pulling on her face, using a whip and spurs in a manner they are not intended for. None of these things are going to help you. If you need help with your horse, reach out to someone experienced in your area. Otherwise, you're just going to end up getting yourself hurt.

I don't pull on her face I asked for her to turn and all she did is flex. my spurs are bumpers I know how to use them and me kicking a horse is not wrong you have to kick her kinda hard sometimes to get her to move so I figured it was one of them times. all the people ive talked to suggested all them things

If you are at the point where you need to ask for advice, you need to be open minded and understand that you may be doing something wrong. Nicole gives some of the best advice on here, especially to teens. You have to be extremely gentle with spurs of any kind and a horse can become unresposive if the spur is used incorrectly or if the horse does not like the way they feel. Hopefully the vet can tell you something is sore and fix it and maybe that is just the problem. If the horse is just playing you IMHO I would give up, sell her and get a older dead broke horse. I usually would never say give up but if getting a trainer is out of the question I think moving on is the safest option.

the vet said she was sound. my parents will not let me get a horse older than 7yr and they will not let me sell her till I try everything cause she will make a 1d barrel horse when finished. I have no say in what I do with this mare my dad tells me what to do if I don't then I don't get to compete.

Well you may need to have a long discussion with your Dad. She's not gonna make a 5D horse if she refuses to move and you dont financially have the ability to get help. Some horses do shut down mentally if there is something going on. Just because a vet says she "sound" doesnt mean she doesnt have dental work or chiro work that needs to be done. Horses that shut down like that, tend to explode if pushed to that breaking point and I am sure you dont want that. See if you Mom/Dad will lead you on her but maybe save the show money and get a chiro out. I know none of these suggestions are probably what you want to hear but a horse thats started on barrels/roping doesnt just one day decide not to move.

good luck

yeah dads going to lead me around on her. my vet did say that the bit I used when my tack was stolen could have made her mouth sore. cause she had never had any kind of bit beside a snaffle in her mouth till then and that's when she started doing that so im going to ride her with a halter tonight and see if that makes any kind of a difference lets pray this is the problem

What kinda bit did you use? I suppose its possible but a bit is only severe as your hands ... but for your peace of mind, I hope that makes a difference.

she actually turned today when I rode her with just a halter but still wouldn't walk forward but would walk toward the pasture where the other horses were. I had to take 3 months off before I started back this past few days because of an injury so she might just be buddy sour do you think that could be it?

She could be but its really hard to know with the info we have. You should really talk to you Dad about at least getting a lesson or two for some insight. There could be so many factors playing into her behavior.

Maybe you could get a video of her and post it to get a better idea of what she's doing exactly. Maybe one of her on the lunge line also.

YES...If you can't or don't know how to fix the issue, I wouldn't keep trying/forcing her. Having a reputable trainer help you out will be better for both you and your horse in the long run.

I also had my horse do this. There was no problem with him, he just decided he didn't need to work that day. He will do it every so often when he feels like he doesn't need to be ridden. You should try to do some new things with your horse, maybe get a ridding buddy, or set up something new in the arena, to grab your horses attention. She might just be getting bored.
