Interested in giving this new product a try, have any of you used it and was it helpful? Not sure about dosing, how far ahead of an event to give it and how long you need to use it? Want to help an anxious horse settle down and perform. If it has to be used continuously kind of pricey long term. What do you all think? Thanks for any input

I was just asking my vet today to check into it for me. We use to use a product called Modifer but have not seen it in years. It was kind of the same idea with the use of endorphines they get when nursing. It worked wonderfull on a cold we had in race training who was a monster in the paddock. I want to give this a try if it isn't too high priced.

yup! I have a colt that I have hauled with me every where and even though that is the case, he was still so gawky and lacked confidence. At home we were starting to lope a nice pattern but when I would take him to a show and exhibition he would often get distracted during an exhibition. Then I couldnt get done what I did at home at a show. He was also a little stinker at the trailer and was always really antsy. Anyways, my vet had a rep come and talk to me and some of her other clients about zylkene. We even got free samples! So I decided to try it on my colt. You have to load it into their system 2 to 3 days before and then also give it on the day of the event. So I gave it to my colt on thursday, friday, and then the day of the show which was saturday.  I was amazed. It worked as good as a low dose of ace to take the edge off... My colt stood nice at the trailer and it was the first show that I was able to keep his attention for him to ride like he does at home. It honestly helped his confidence A LOT. Then the next show I took him to I didnt use anything and he did great again.  It is used for behavior modification to so it is nice that it doesnt have sedative effects. It basically helped him get over his gawkiness and boosted his confidence, which we know is a big part to most horse behavioral issues... anxiety, insecurity, and so on...  My open horse is a 1d horse at big shows and at rodeos she has done well but only if it is a bigger pattern and the barrels are off the fence.  At loud rodeo arenas or smaller rodeo pens where the barrels are right on the fence she shuts down and I can feel her gawking at the crowd, lights or whatever. So since at pro rodeos the WPRA has the USEF drug rules I do not want to try ace. SOOO I am going to try zylkene on her this year. I plan on trying it on her in 2 weeks. I want to see if it helps her confidence.... I'll keep you informed lol.

It is exspensive... its like 7 to 8 dollars a dose!!! I buy mine from viovet.com which is over in the United Kingdom (which is where it has been used for quite a few years so the prices are cheaper). Its only 4 dollars a dose and shipping is only about 10 dollars... I pay about 90 dollars for 20 doses. At my vet that brought the rep in they wanted almost 150 for 20 doses!

Thanks for the info guys. Purchased some to try but vet sort of indicated to feed it daily and that was Way too expensive so will try it Thursday to Saturday. Good to know it can be purchased cheaper also. As always fellow barrel racers and competitors are the go to's for good feedback and info.

Great feedback! I was wondering if it would zonk them out and wouldn't let them run.  Great explanation, thank you!

Thanks for the informations. I don't think that is too bad a price if it helps get this mare over her anxiety issue. She had a bad ulcer problem and now if we haul to ride she can't handle it but at home is great. Her ulcers are healed so I know it is just her thinking on it. I feel bad because she was never a nervous or anxious horse before. Once again thanks

I've been using it on my mare with gate issues. Since we can't pronounce the name, we just refer to it as the miracle drug. It works wonders. My mare has not refused the gate one time while this stuff is in her system. Back in September I thought I was going to have to stop running her because it had gotten so bad. Our vet gave us the 2000 dose but it ended up being too much so now we just give her half a packet 2-3 hours before I run her.

So you don't load up a few days before? You give it to her 3 hours out?  Is she groggy? Wondering if it will take the run out of them? My has a gate issue too and wondering if I should try it.

Nope I just wait till I get to the barrel race and give it to her. I mix it with sweet feed and she eats it right up. I try to time it to where its no more than 3 hours but this past weekend it was almost 5 (tractor trouble) and it still worked. It doesnt make her groggy. I did notice when I was giving a full packet that it took the run out of her and almost felt like she was running drunk. So thats why I backed her up to half a packet. She still goes in great but now we are running like normal. I would try it. I was extremely skeptical when the vet told me about it. But I had already tried other things with no success so I didnt have anything to lose. It ended up being a great thing.

So you are just giving a gram (1000 mg), about 3 hours out?

Glad I saw this, our vet just recommended the dog version for our Corgi for his storm anxiety. It was cheap so I bought a bottle but I wasn't going to get my hopes up. Now I'm excited to try it after reading this!

That's right! It's powder so give or take on the dosage but I try to get as close to half as I can. I'm going to try to buy some of the 1000 mg online because my vet will only sell the 2000 mg. I wish I had videos to show you guys the difference. My mare has a whole different attitude. I will say that my mare is a lightweight when it comes to any kind of sedation. She gets half the dose of anything when we are at the vets because she will fall out on a normal dose. So the 2000 mg may be necessary for some horses.

RFD TV had a hour long special this evening on Zylkene, I just caught the tail end of the show, but fairly sure it will reair later this evening, or watch it on RFD Country Club.

Sorry for all the questions! Just one more, did you just add this to her diet or did you change any feed at the same time?

We have made ZERO other changes so I know for a fact it's this medicine. My mare is 18 years old and a very solid 3D horse. Last night we ran against some tough horses and she was too fast for the 3D.  She was anxious to get in the arena. If I could become a rep for this stuff I would. But I do believe it's RX only.

It is not rx... Vets are just the sellers of it for now since it is now in the US. You can buy it from allivet. I buy it from viovet.com over in the UK... its over 60 dollars cheaper.

Thanks so much! I have some issues with him walking by other horses to get into the arena. If no one is hanging around the gate, he runs in but he thinks every horse is his buddy. I read so much about gate issues and remedies just to find out they changed the entire diet. I'm going to try this and give you an update in a couple of months!
