My 8 yr old son was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer this afternoon. I brought him into the er yesterday because he fell off a trampoline and hurt his side, which he had injured a few months ago during football where he was diagnosed with a "bruised lung" he seemed to have healed up from that but falling from the trampoline he said he landed on the same side and was in a lot of pain. They started doing x rays and ultrasound and they discovered a large mass on his kidney. I knew something was wrong when the different Dr's kept coming in and looking at him and ultrasounds. One dr pulled me aside and told me they found something they didn't like. They ordered a CT scan and it did confirm that he had a large mass there. We are admitted in the hospital and he had surgery today to get a biopsy of it and also get a port put in. The surgeon informed us that the tumors had spread into his lungs and it is indeed cancer. Chemo and radiation are in his future. We won't know how agressive we will need to be until next week when they get the results in. I'm asking for prayers for him and for my family we are absolutely devastated. My baby had zero signs of being sick he was a healthy very active 8 yr old boy.

His name is Jacob. The dr told us we may be able to go home as soon as tomorrow to let him rest until we get the final results. Treatment may start as early as next Friday. I have probably slept only a few hours within the last few days. Trying to hold back my tears in front of him so he doesn't get scared. He knows he's got bad stuff inside him and we are trying to get it out. Thank you very much for the prayers.

I hope you have a good support system of friends and family.  You sure will need it.  HUGS

The outpouring of love, prayers and support from our community, family and friends has been amazing. He's pretty heavily sedated from surgery so he's doing a lot of sleeping. I'm thankful for his team of Dr's here and the Dr's in the er who were thorough enough to spot the mass... had I not brought him in for his fall we wouldn't have found out. He showed no symptoms of having a tumor or let alone cancer. My world completely turned upside yesterday and the emotions I'm dealing with are indescribable, thank God my husband is here with us, he's been my rock thru this. I just pray that this cancer is favorable because if it is, there's a 85-90% cure rate with very light chemo. If it's unfavorable, he will need more invasive treatment. I want my son to be ok, I want to take his place he doesn't deserve this

First of all, never underestimate the power of prayer. Check with your doctors about getting him to St Jude's. They are cutting edge. Treatment is free. For the rest of you, give to St Jude's when you can. It is one few places I donate. There are so many new treatments now that are very effective. Prayers for your family and prayers to guide the doctors.

God we pray you touch this precious child, take away his pain and fear, guide the doctors in their treatments of him, and allow his family to have peace in the knowledge you have your hand on ALL situations surrounding this sickness. I know you are still in the miracle business every single day, and we ask this in your mighty mighty name. Amen

I'm like Jake---if you need something just pm me. I will pray, cry, let you vent, or just listen. As a momma to a momma, I simply cannot imagine. . . . .

This^^^^ St. Jude's was my first thought too. We donate what we can every year to them because we know the treatment and research is top notch and helps so many children and their families.

Prayers beyond prayers, I can't even imagine. Big, big hugs from Kansas.

PS, I agree on St. Jude's. My cousin's granddaughter had some sort of eye cancer at age 2, they had to remove her eye but she is a happy, healthy 10 yr old now! St. Jude's was a Godsend.

Please know that your son is in my thoughts and prayers as well as you and your family. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling. As someone said St. Judes I am from Memphis and that place is amazing and probably the best thing about Memphis, I have friends and family that work or have worked there you will not meet better people they're so supportive. Again my prayers are with you and nothing but positive thoughts.

We didn't get to go home tonight because he keeps getting fevers and they'd like to monitor him, which I agree with. He's starting to eat a bit more and asked for chips n salsa. My boy is starting to come back lol! The color in his face is returning as well. We are hoping to get him home tomorrow for the rest of the weekend before we begin treatment next week. My goal is to get him stronger before we begin the next step. Thank ya'll so much for the prayers they mean so much to us. God Bless

Thank you. The coming days are going to be unlike anything we've gone thru and I'm honestly scared to death but I'm staying positive and a smile on my face for my son and my other kids. It's hard to do but I know it helps them. I cry when I'm by myself or with my husband.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't even imagine the shock.
For what it's worth, if this is the commonest type of kidney malignancy in kids (?Wilm's Tumor), there has been amazing progress in cure rates over the past 20 years with aggressive treatment. This is really one of those areas where there has been amazing advances, so keep your chin up and we'll keep you and your boy in our prayers.

Thank you this gives me more hope. I know a lot of people have suggested taking him to other cancer centers. We obviously want what's best for him and the best THE BEST possible care and treatments. Looking like we will be having our meeting next Thursday to discuss the biopsy report and a plan of attack. My sister in law has worked for Scott n white for several several years and she knows each dr and plenty of nurses.. she's assuring us we are in the right place. Apparently these Dr's have access to all the other cancer center Dr's and consult quite often with one another on cases like this. These are the questions I'll be asking when we meet. I'd love to keep him close by so he can be with his family and friends. We live in a very small town and our whole town is praying for him. He will be doing home school as well and one of the teachers from our school will be coming over a few times a week to keep him on track till we get thru this. Thank you guys for the prayers and thoughts, they help. God bless

A small but positive update.. he's been running a fever, the took blood and so far everything is coming back negative. They are testing his port to see if maybe something is going on there. He's so much more alert today sitting up and eating. Huge improvement. Plus he had 2 of his classmates and baseball team members come visit him today.. first time I've seen my baby smile since we checked in the er Tuesday morning. It made my heart so happy to see him like that. So now we just wait, they started him on a round of antibiotics just in case. It's undecided still if he can go home today. The prayers are working! God Bless!

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Scott and White.
Protocols for cancer are not kept secret. They are widely shared across the country and I’m confident his doctors will be very in tune to the latest.

I'm feeling a whole bunch of different emotions this morning. I suppose it's because lack of sleep. I've been pretty steady up until now. He's doing better, we actually made it thru the night without fever so that's great! I'm really hoping today is the day we go home. I'm sorry but this place may end up being the place I can freely vent. I'm trying to focus only on my son and getting him well. But as . I kept reminding myself this isn't about me or how I feel, shift focus on my son. It's going to be a learning curve for me to put my blinders on and ignore the unimportant things and people. My son needs me to be 100% focused on him and his journey. Sorry, I'm just venting here I'm sure I'm a bit under slept and stir crazy being inside this room all the time. I plan to go home as soon as his father gets here so I can clear my head, get a hot meal and shower before I come back

But as some of you know I do have an ex husband, my son's father.. of course he's been here, which I want. But he's being so over bearing, I'm sure it's his way of dealing with it. We don't have the best past but all that aside now that we are fighting for our sons life. He was here last night with his current girlfriend and I just felt out of place. My husband had gone home. I feel sad that no one from "our side" has come visit us in here, but lots from my ex side has been here, I'm grateful for the visitors for my son it makes him happy. One of my sister in laws that I thought I was the closest to hasn't even called or text me since we found out... I was on fb last night and saw that she had posted pics of her, her husband some mutual friends of ours and my husband having a good time down at her house and wrote great family night having fun! And of course they were all cutting it up drinking and taking lots of pics. I felt angry at first, then hurt. I kept reminding myself this isn't about me or how I feel, shift focus on my son. It's going to be a learning curve for me to put my blinders on and ignore the unimportant things and people. My son needs me to be 100% focused on him and his journey. It must be so hard to deal with people, who are just so wrapped up in their own worlds...try to focus on what truly matters, and get some rest...also the Chapel in the hospital, would be a good place to go, to pray, meditate, and decompress. My thoughts, prayers, are with you thoughout the day....Hugs.

A great update, he's doing so well. He wanted to go outside today so we took him in the wheelchair and we sat out in the garden a while. My husband brought him his all time favorite, a bean burrito from taco bell lol! He gobbled up more than half of it. He also got to take a nice warm shower too, first 1 he's had since being admitted. He decided he was going to walk on his own all the way back to his room. He's getting there! Dr's said as long as the fever stays away and he keeps drinking his water and using his breathing machine to expand his lungs he can come home tonight yay!!! God Bless and thank ya'll for the continued prayers

Kudos to you for attitude towards this journey...it IS all about your son. Your positive attitude will be better for him and help him through this trying time.....Many....many ..... many prayers for his complete recovery, for your continued strength and for his Dr.'s healing hands..... and I think that you know that you can come here anytime to vent or for support....

If anyone would like to follow along in Facebook, my neice and my sister set up a page just for him so we could post pics and progress..
It's called Jacob strong
Gotta pay attention to the capital J and lower case "s" to find him... he's the little guy with the baseball glove .. there was a few other Jacob Strongs on there.
I'll keep updating here because I know a lot of people don't do fb.

Sorry, I'm just venting here I'm sure I'm a bit under slept and stir crazy being inside this room all the time. I plan to go home as soon as his father gets here so I can clear my head, get a hot meal and shower before I come back

Please remember that different people handle stressful situations differently. That being said, remember the song YOU FIND OUT WHO YOUR FRIENDS ARE? It does hold very true. I have been in your shoes. I also want to add, if you need help from someone ask. If you have a true friend, they will help. I will tell you that you cannot do everything yourself.

Ditto, I also would suggest buying a notebook to make notes from doctor consultations and exams, results of testing, log his fevers etc. it is so much information to take in and digest there is no way to remember it all.   Continued prayers

Thank you everyone for the prayers. Honestly my crying jags happen throughout the day, when I'm alone. I did get pretty teared up today when I dropped my other two children off at school, I'm so use to seeing jacob walk away from my pickup. It was a tough moment for sure. He's really doing awesome today... no fever so far, had a little one trying to creep up on us last night, but we've got it under control now. He slept all night without incident I was up every 2 hours taking his temp. Our little community is nothing short of amazing, his classmates and teachers are wearing t shirts that say # Jacob Strong it warms my heart at the amount of support and generosity of our little town. Everyone's pulling for him. I just know he's going to win.

He loves baseball, absolutely loves it. His team won 3 championship rings last season, he played 3rd base, catcher, 1st base and even had his hand at pitching. He likes to watch football not so much play it anymore. He likes to watch bull riding sometimes too. He's not much into the horses but every once in a while he will want to ride one around the pasture. That kills my husband because jacob CAN rope. He's like a total natural with the rope and the dummy. Even if he goes months and months without picking up a rope, he can go out there and catch every single time lol! Maybe some day I can get him to riding more. He's a huge animal lover and has the biggest heart when it comes to them, he's one of those that'll cry when the humane society shows those horrible commercials on tv. He just can't imagine why anyone would want to harm an animal. I love that about him. He loves his family very much. He has his share of bickering with his younger brother, who's 6 but they play and get along more often than not. His big sister has stepped up like I've never seen, she's been by his side since we found out. She even stayed overnight in the hospital with me one night to help care for him, she's 13.

His favorite food, I'm going to say it's my loaded baked potato soup, which I have in the crockpot right now for him. It's usually the only thing he requests when he wants something specific lol! He's a typical kid, loves his share of junk food too, and taco bell. He's so extremely thin right now, it almost makes you gasp when you see him.. he's always been on the smaller side but he's really really thin now.. trying to put some weight back on him, his appetite is picking up slowly though.

He loves his school teacher too, his little face lit up when she came to see him. He also loves his schools HS football team, he has a goal of getting to run thru the blow up tunnel they run out of at big games lol! All he talks about is that darn thing, even asked for 1 for Christmas lol!

He's doing ok today, he's really tired. But he had about 7 boys from his baseball team come by tonight and give him a huge goodie bag full of stuff! He really enjoyed seeing his friends. Lots of smiles in our home tonight. My husband received a phone call from our local walmart letting us know that someone came in and paid off our Christmas layaway for us. I'm in tears typing this. We had put our kids Christmas gifts on layaway a while back, we were getting a little worried about how we were going to swing this by the 11th. My husband has a good job, but when he doesn't work, he doesn't get paid and he took off several days to be with us in the hospital. We are so blessed to have the love and support of family and our wonderful little community.

How wonderful, you are surrounded by love! Continued orayers

I finally got to go to the barn this morning without worrying about how much time I could spend, my mother and my cousin came to our home to help me out for the next few months. I knew jacob was being watched in the house so I could take my time out at the barn.. I fed my horses and cleaned stalls all while listening to them eat.. I may be weird, but the sound of them eating calms me, loving on them and burying my face in their mane relaxes me and makes me happy for a second! I was thankful for that 30 minutes today to just, be... not rushing thru outside chores because I was in a hurry to get back to Jacob, worrying if he needed something. I'm so glad I have my horses, they offer me some sort of normal lately.

So glad you got to spend barn time they are healing force. My situation is nothing like yours but I had been sick for the last 3 years and I will tell you just having them and having to get up to take care of them was a Godsend. It's amazing what just cleaning stalls can do for you. So happy your family came to help and give you some downtime for yourself. prayers

Don’t feel guilt taking a little  time for yourself.   Thru my nieces journey with her brain tumor I flew out often for the many hospital stays so my sister and her husband could sleep at home and recharge.

Quick update... our prayers have been heard and answered. We are dealing with the favorable type. Very high success rate and they've successfully treated that kind there just recently. The relief we feel is amazing. He starts chemo tomorrow and we go in once a week for 6 weeks he gets to be outpatient as well! God is good, all the time. Thank you Jesus!

Great news. My family has dealt with more than our fair share of Cancer, and the technology has increased so much from what it used to be. They have so many tools at thier dosposal now days. One thing I would reccomend for your sanity is a gratitude journal of some sort, just something to write in daily to help you stay grounded. Life will seem like everything is combining against you, but when you sit down and look for the positives they are still there, and it will really help your attitude and the attitude of your little guy. Still sending prayers Jacob, you and your family.

Fantastic! I was hoping for that. Was it a "Wilm's tumor"?
The progress they've made with that one has been nothing short of amazing.

Yes a wilms tumor. What happened is when they went in to get the biopsy they discovered it had ruptured, could have happened when he fell off the trampoline. They want to do 6 weeks of this chemo then do another scan to see the progress we are making, then go in and do surgery to remove the tumor... then we will see if we do more chemo plus radiation.

He's having an average weekend, the antibiotics he has to take every weekend are kind of making him nauseated. I'll ask his dr if there's an alternative he can try. Other than that he's pretty good considering. He was gifted a very nice .22 from some good friends of ours, he was pretty stoked on it and has shot it off our back porch a bunch! He looks so frail and pale but I know he will pick up once they start giving him something to stimulate his appetite. Right now it comes n goes. I, on the other hand am struggling for some reason the last few days. I've been so strong up until last night, I broke down after putting him to bed and he looked at me with tears in his eyes and asked mom, why is this happening to me? I was able to hold it together until I went outside his room and sat at the kitchen table... everything came at once and I think I had an honest to goodness old fashioned melt down.. my husband, mom, sister, my cousin, my youngest son and my daughter where all there with me and just let me, let it go. I can't believe how much I'd had been holding back. I'd like to say I felt better but I dont. We have the rest of the week to relax before we go back Friday for round 2 of treatment. Now that we kind of know what to expect at these appointments it should be less stressful. Thank you for the continued prayers we sure need them.

Certainly do not be ashamed of letting it all out ..... it will be a hard road ahead but you are a very strong person (I know by your posts....LOL). It would be very unhealthy to hold it all in....please, find a place of solace and let your self "feel" every now and then.....and come back here to cry, yell, scream, stomp your feet or whatever and let us help you through!

Thank you very much. I just felt awful that my other 2 kids had to witness my weakness. More so, my youngest son, my daughter has seen me at my worst in the past and she's a little rock for me at times. My youngest came over to me and just wanted to sit in my lap. I think he was scared.

No matter how strong you want to be YOU ARE A MOTHER.Your baby is sick with something NO ONE wants to hear or ever have to face. You can have all the breakdowns that happen, because breakdowns are normal in these long roads you are traveling. We may think we are hiding or protecting our children from knowing how scared we are,but in reality most of the time they know.Just let them know it's ok for them to be sad too.HOLD THEM,LOVE THEM PRAY WITH THEM.JUMP ,SCREAM CRY LAUGH ITS ALL NORMAL.YOU ARE FIGHTING A FIGHT NO ONE WANTS TO FIGHT.MAY GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY THROUGH THIS TIME.Always thinking of you.

God bless your heart. . . There are no words I can say to help because I have NO way to begin to imagine what you're going thru. I do truly believe that seeing you cry and let emotion out will let your other kids know that means it is ok to do that. And it will benefit them if they break down because they see how strong you are even tho you cried. Please know we are praying for all of you, and like NJJ said, you can come here for anything you need and we have your back.

I think of Jacob and you often.  Please don't feel bad for being real and having a "melt down".  The other kids need to know wthat being upset is ok.  From your posts, you are not one to sit arround blubbering and stuck in the melt down.  God bless and HUGS!

We had an awful night, but I really blame the antibiotics. He doesn't need to take them during the week only the weekends after treatment. He was vomiting all night long, it sucked because he actually ate really well.. he's so thin. He's doing a,little better today. He's gun shy now on food, can't blame him.. but he's eaten 2 Popsicles a little bit of mac n cheese and now 3 packages of teddy grahams. So far no more vomiting. I'm making homemade tortilla soup tonight so I'm hoping he will eat a little bit of that too.

I'm really hoping they can give us a different antibiotic in this case. It may just be too much on him. We half the pill and give 1 half in the morning and the other in the evening, I've made sure he's eaten before taking it too. It really just didn't agree with him. He's eaten 2 bowls of the chicken tortilla soup I made tonight! So that's a great sign. He hasn't complained today about his belly hurting, the only thing different today, is no antibiotics.. the dr did prescribe him Zofran for nausea. I gave him one yesterday when he first started complaining but it didn't do much for him last night.

When you spoke about breaking down, it made me remember about ten years ago when my youngest son (he was a young adult but still lived at home) was diagnosed with cancer.  I had about an hour drive to work and would cry all the way to work and all the way home.  It was my only outlet and it helped to let it out.  If you need to cry, just cry.  Prays for you and your son.

Well, I think I'm going to give my dr a call and go see her for some help. My anxiety is really starting to push it's way to the surface and it's greatly affecting my sleep and just my overall well being, if there's such a thing for me right now! I took my daughter to her dr this morning which is in the same speciality clinic I take jacob to for his treatments. She broke her foot a while back so we've been doing follow up appointments every 3-4 weeks. I felt a small anxiety attack coming on in the elevator and it really scared me. I know I haven't been sleeping well, even when jacob is sound asleep and feeling decent. I really don't want to have to take "something" to keep me "ok" but I know Jacob needs me to be ok and if that's what it takes, I'll do it. Sorry, I'm just writing out what I feel, sometimes it helps me to put things into perspective, I know I need to take care of me too so I can take care of Jacob and everyone else.

You do what you have to do to deal!! There is no shame in needing help to cope with the hand you’ve been dealt. That’s why they make those medicines!! You’re handling this so much better than you could be! You’re amazing! Just keep going forward.

Just checking on you. Hey it's okay to cry, scream, get mad then use that madness to fight. Don't hold it all in. Trust me it's not good did that myself, it's really not good. Try to take a little bit of time for yourself everyday even it's only 5 minutes. And something that worked for me was journaling gets everything out. note to self need to burn the spirals :). Get all that negativity out then let the positive in. Still praying for you guys. And your son is a cutie. hugs.

Thank you so much for the encouraging words and prayers. Jacob had a great day yesterday. Lots of smiles and laughing and I think everytime I walked by him, he was eating! Yay! He definitely had an appetite yesterday and last night. He most likely will begin his homebound school program next week, he just has to complete 4 hours per week to keep up. And 2 teachers from his school will be coming to the house. Our school has been amazing for us, lots of support and they took care of everything for us regarding setting up the homebound program. They'll be providing us with the laptop and Internet service. Truly a blessing. I head to my dr here shortly too. I'm dealing with a pretty ugly conflict right now in regards to my ex but I'm hoping we can resolve the issue so it doesn't take away from us focusing on the most important thing right now. I'm not confident we will but I'm going to do my best to handle it.

want2chase3 - 2017-12-13 10:12 AM Thank you so much for the encouraging words and prayers.

So glad to hear he had a great day, I hope the first of many thru this journey!

I am so sorry for you and will pray for that special little man. I am a NP and a patient/barrel buddy had some problems this last summer when a diagnosis blew us out of the saddle, miracles happen everyday in the medical field, prayers will comfort you, know you and your son is in our prayers.

Jacob had a great day. My husband took him to the local park to get some fresh air, he's been cooped up inside all week. He also felt up to go shoot his gun at our makeshift shooting range, instead of off our back porch. He ate an entire 6" subway sandwich too lol! Tomorrow afternoon we go for his 2nd chemo treatment and he also is going to have an ekg done. Hoping for an easy treatment session again. If jacob feels up to it, my husband's coworker is allowing them to come hunt on his lease Saturday afternoon. As for myself, I've been in bed all afternoon, I've felt horrible so I'm keeping myself away from him, it's really hard but I hope I'm ok tomorrow.

Jacobs treatment yesterday couldn't have gone any better. He did fantastic. The dr also took him off the antibiotics that were making him so sick. He now will receive an antibiotic once a month at the clinic thru a breathing type treatment. So big relief there. His appetite continues to improve. His blood work looked great too, so things are moving right along! This afternoon the dr gave us the green light to take him hunting and he's beyond excited! He also begins his homebound schooling next Tuesday, he's actually looking forward to it. They have it set up where he will be able to play math and reading games online with his classmates! So neat! The school is also going to set up a time for his class to come meet us at the park to play with Jacob for AR reward trips. He's SUPER excited about that too..I love seeing him full of life

Thank you. I'd love to kick back and relax today but he begged me to tag along to the deer stand lol! I typically don't go because I think it's incredibly boring lol!! But he wants momma to go, so mommas going! I wouldn't miss it for the world. Plus we've got to put hay up in the barn and go get feed, rains on its way! I really hope he gets his buck, there's 3 big boys in the area we are going to. Incredibly generous of the guy to let my husband bring our boy out there to take one. You can bet I'll be taking lots of pics!

Unfortunately we didn't get to go. The rain came in with a vengeance right when we were supposed to leave and it didn't quit till well after midnight. We are going to go next weekend! With it being so cold and the pouring rain and wind we figured it wasn't a good idea to take him out in that and risk the chance of not seeing anything.

It seems like Sundays are going to be his "bad" day... his fever started coming on again last night, it's been several days since this has happened. We had to page the hospital for after hours and much to our surprise and total delight, our very own oncologist called us back in less than a minute. We told him what his fevers were running and he said as long as he's "normal" with everything else, which he was, we could stay home and give tylenol as needed. Such a huge relief for him and us, last thing I wanted to do was drag him to the er in the middle of the night where there is no doubt a ton of sick people in there, flu has hit our area something fierce and a pretty nasty stomach bug too. He's resting easy now with no fever. I went to wake his younger brother this morning and HE is running a fever now.. he's isolated in our bedroom for now. Needless to say I'm pretty stressed out at the moment. I hope everyone gets well and stays well. We've all started taking extra vitamins and I've been on a wildwoman cleaning, disinfecting rampage. No one comes in my home if they've been sick or around anyone sick and no one gets past the kitchen without washing hands and using the gigantic bottle of hand sanitizer. It's hard with the other 2 kids going to school and being exposed and then coming home.. but I'm doing the best I can and our dr said there's only so much I can do to prevent.. probably need to relax a little. :-(

Thinking of Jacob tonight hoping he is feeling well.:)

He had a great day. One of his teachers came over and spent some time with him and got him all set up on his laptop to do school work. He was gifted a very nice pair of cowboy boots from a good friend of mine and that's all he's been talking about! He's been really happy today and eating well! I love these days

Yikes! What a night I had... my youngest decided to run a fever again, so he went back into isolation, my bedroom! Tylenol helped break his fever, I came in to check him and he was drenched in sweat, but cool. So hopefully that'll be the last of it.. he's left with a cough. I was asleep, about midnight jacob came in my room crying, saying he was afraid he was going to throw up.. so I got up grabbed my pillow and blanket and went to his room.. he took a Zofran to help with nausea and I think it was about 230 when he finally fell asleep.. I did too and then my youngest came into Jakes room to wake me saying he had a nightmare, so I gathered my pillows and blankets and off to his room to help him go back to sleep... phew!!! Think I finally fell asleep again around 6 ish.. got about an hour of solid sleep before dogs barged in wanting to go outside and I could hear horses banging on their feed troughs ... sigh... gotta take my daughter to her foot dr here in a few hours and then take her Christmas shopping, then my husband should be home and he and I need to go finish up all our Christmas shopping! Made my coffee a little higher octane this morning

His 3rd treatment went very well today, he also got his first antibiotic via breathing treatment, it didn't bother him a bit. Only lasted about 10 minutes. He also has gained a little over 2lbs so that's good! He's been loving his mint n chip ice cream lol! Dr said let him eat as much as he wants. We are all headed to bed now, hopefully he will feel up to getting up at 5am to go get that buck in the morning! But I told him that we'd see how he feels. He's pretty determined to get out there though! Thanks for the prayers and thinking of us!

We did get up and go this morning! It was freezing but thankfully there was a heater on the stand. We saw a few, but no shooters unfortunately. He gets to go again next weekend. I think he enjoyed himself though and he did get a big kick out of riding to the deer stand in the Polaris, it was like mudding lol! We are covered in mud! He asked if he could keep the mud on his face today. It'll be a miracle if none of us get this crud that's going around out here, colt had a little bout but not like what everyone else has been getting around these parts. I wipe EVERYTHING down daily with clorox wipes and I've got the taste of lysol in my mouth! I'm trying my best to keep us well. There's a bad 24 hour stomach bug that just about everyone we know has gotten. And Jacobs father was so sick yesterday he couldn't come into the clinic while jake was getting his treatment. I'm hoping the antibiotics he received yesterday help ward off any potential illness that may make its way into my home.

Merry Christmas! Jacob is having a great Christmas! This is the first time he hasn't had any down time after treatment... just proves the fact to keep him going and looking forward to something is going to keep him healthy and fighting! He's running around like a crazy guy with his little brother outside playing with their new monster trucks in the big dirt pile by the barn lol! Love to see the smiles and hear the laughing.. such a blessing! I hope ya'll are having a wonderful Christmas with your families.

He's having a very emotional evening ... crying ... asking why.. I'm struggling to keep my game face on and be brave enough for both of us... he asked what would happen if he didn't beat this.. my heart breaks. I just tell him he's going to beat this and it'll be ok.. I'm at a loss for words. .. first time since he's been diagnosed I'm alone with him.. my husband is gone and my mother took my two other kids with her to go visit. My stepdaughter just got here, thank goodness but she's a bigger mess than I am.. we are both blubbering over him.

He's doing a lot better today. He slept with me last night. When he woke up and sat up, I noticed a bunch of his hair had fallen out and was on the pillow case and on his shirt.. sigh... so it begins.... I really hope it doesn't just start coming out in huge chunks before he agrees to let us shave it. We have a head shaving party ready to go whenever he's ready.. several of his buddies from school and his baseball team, plus the coaches are all going to shave theirs with him. Yes, tomorrow will be his 4th treatment, he will be getting 2 medications tomorrow. Then we will have 2 more treatments before they do another scan to see how everything is responding.

Today we go for #4 infusion. He will be getting 2 vials today of 2 different chemo treatments so we are really hoping it won't affect him too badly. It really shouldn't but it's impossible to say. Dr said it should only take about 15 minutes each treatment. Otherwise he's in pretty good spirits!

He had a little bit of an uneasy night, they gave him some liquid Zofran yesterday before his treatments but it wore off soon after we got home.. I have a prescription for it so I gave him more and that seemed to help. He ended up falling asleep and he was able to sleep all night. He felt a little sick this morning but after another Zofran and some bacon he said he felt good. My husband and him are going to the deer lease again this afternoon, I pray he gets his buck it'll lift his spirits I think!

Well that buck eluded them once again! Lol! He's not giving up though, and the guys that share that lease aren't either, they said to just keep bringing him till they get one! He was really tired yesterday, my husband said he fell asleep on the way to the lease and slept most of the time inside the stand and then on the way home! Plus he took a 2 hour nap before they even left! This last treatment seemed to really wipe him out.. poor little guy. Hopefully he will feel better today. The cold weather is really supposed to hit us this afternoon so we will be spending lots of time inside over the next week. I'm going to look into some extra vitamins for him, he does take extra C and D right now but I'm thinking with his limited diet it sure wouldn't hurt to get extra nutrients into his little body! So, mr. Buck, you live to see another day... but Jacob is coming for you and he will get you lol!!!

He's not feeling that great today. Woke up and just felt yucky.. I was stroking his head and the hair is really starting to come out... he also has been complaining about a bad taste in his mouth, from the chemo. Poor baby... we have mints, jolly ranchers and suckers for him to try and help with that... the Dr's warned us of all these symptoms, including hair loss, but I'm not prepared. I feel a lot of sadness today for some reason.. we are supposed to have some people over and I just can't get into it. I kinda feel like my auto pilot just took over and I'm just barely functioning! So much cooking to do, I've gotten most of it done and my outside chores are finished, it's absolutely freezing out here today so I'm sure that doesn't help my mood.. Sure would love some sunshine already! I always use to feel excited for New Years eve but I'm just not feeling it at all today. Sorry to sound like such a Debbie downer here, I really need to pick myself up and stay strong.

You are more than allowed to have your down days.I can't imagine being in your shoes for one minute much less the day to day fight you are going through. It will be good to get the scans done and move forward.Poor Jacob has to be exhausted, confused, scared, among other things just as you are.If you don't feel like having company, cancel them.If you don't get rest,no one will. Please remember you are in my prayers daily.I sure hope you get help from hubby and the rest of the family.

Thank you very much.. I'm really not in the mood for company but I feel it's too late to cancel and the food is pretty much prepared.. I'm hoping it'll just be a few people, my in laws anyway.. which is fine, I'm just feeling a bit on edge, lack of sleep last few days, cold yucky weather too. My FIL comes over and complains about my dogs being in our house and my horses wearing blankets... every single time.. ugh! Hopefully he won't bust my chops too bad today because this momma ain't in the mood! Lol! Hopefully it will be a quick visit anyway, we never make it to midnight, not planning on trying tonight either!

I was wondering about the buck too.  They warned me when I was on chemo that the metal taste of utensils might cause me to have to use plastic spoons and forks.  Don't know if yours said anything or not.  Nothing tastes the same.  I know some will gag when I say this but the only thing I could eat for the six months on it was a piece of dry bread, spam and a coke.  I don't care what someone cooked it just didn't taste good.  Maybe he will find something that he can eat that tastes good to him.  If he does I suggest you let him have as much of it as he can tolerate.  I wonder if he doesn't need some Vitamin B, Vitamin D3 and K2.  You are all in my prayers.

Yes, thank you... right now he favors mint chocolate chip ice cream and pepperoni pizza... that's pretty much all he eats! I made some queso tonight and he ate a bunch of it. I'm just giving him whatever he will eat at this point!

My grandfather only wanted lemon cake and red jelly cake. Momma alternated weeks making them. He said sweet was the only thing that tasted anywhere near right. The doctors said let him eat whatever he wanted, as long as he was eating. . . . My prayer this New Year's eve is for Jacob's scans to be good and the new year to do a complete turn around for your entire family

AND FOR THE BUCK TO PRESENT HIMSELF!!!!

Thank you so much. He's feeling really good today.. first thing he said this morning when he woke up was mom, I don't feel bad! I'll take it! They might head out to the deer stand this afternoon. ... fingers crossed, it's nice and cold so the deer should be moving!

I read Jacob's story for the first time last week. My heart broke for him and your entire family, I even cried some for you all. However, the more I read the more I realized how incredible strong everyone of you are. I sincerely hope that he gets that monster buck but more importantly I pray at 2018 brings healing to Jacob! Hugs to all of you and especially that precious young man!

Well they didn't end up going, my poor hubby had to help me get the water working so we could get water to the horses, everything froze! We had to go dig out our heated buckets and get them hung in the barn, we don't have electric set up out there yet so we had to get creative with extension cords! Took us a while to get everything set up. It was just too late by the time we finished up. He has plans to get him out there this week, hopefully before his next treatment, he will be getting the same exact medication he got last time so he will probably not feel really well again for a few days.. unfortunately. .. he's looking forward to a few of his friends coming over this afternoon to play, he sure misses his friends, makes me sad for him.

As far as his gofundme account, my ex husband is the one who set it up, we receive the funds and my neice was able to link it to his page on facebook, I'm not good enough on the computers to do stuff like that! I'll see if I can share it on here. We are also planning a fundraiser for him in the future.. a very popular country music band out here contacted my husband and said they'd be happy to perform at it for Jacob and my husband's nephew has an amazing bbq team that will do all the cooking and sell bbq plates.. lots of people have asked and want to donate things for an auction. Our insurance company is great, they have contacted us and said a lot of Jacobs treatments are 100% covered because we met our deductible a while back... I picked up a prescription for him the other day and it cost me $1.64 my husband's company has one of THE best insurance plans for employees in the industry. I'm so thankful we added Jacob to it when we did.. his father is required to provide him with insurance but he took them off a while ago, whole other story there, but it's ok because jacob and my daughter are both covered under our insurance. I'm grateful for the donations that have been given, they definitely help ease a little stress for us. My husband is pretty much working normal hours and they let him adjust some things around so he can be with us every Friday for Jacobs treatment sessions. I'm not exactly sure how much this whole ordeal is going to end up costing but I'm not going to worry about it right now, I just want my baby healed!

Hang in there Momma, God is making a way. I'm so glad the insurance is good and things seem to be covered in that area as well as your husband's work being good on his work schedule. When I had my wreck, my momma was off work for around 3 or 4 months straight (bank VP). They told her stay with me as long as needed and not worry about her job. Never missed paying her one penny of her paychecks. What a blessing it is to have good employers. Jacob and all your family continue to be in my nightly prayers

Thank ya'll so much for the prayers, means so much to us. He has 2 buddies over today, had a little pizza and they are playing up a storm. It's fun to hear him laughing. Also made me happy when he asked me to pick him up some apples, cantaloupe and some string cheese from the grocery store this morning! I like for my kids to eat healthy but he hadn't been wanting anything but ice cream, pizza and chips and taco bell for the last several weeks! I was just letting him eat whatever he would because he was so thin! Oh, and he ate 2 grilled cheese yesterday too lol! He's going for his 5th treatment this Friday. It will just be the Vincristine this time, which has always been really easy for him to deal with.. not really any down time with that one from experience. Good thing, because they are going to the deer lease Saturday again! The gentlemen that own the lease are letting my husband and Jacob go to the best stand on the place where they have been seeing the most and BIGGEST bucks... so fingers crossed for him, again! I believe we will be meeting with the surgeon also on Friday. He will need just 1 more treatment and then we scan. Definitely praying everything is responding as it should and we will then know what to do. Surgery to remove the tumor, hopefully he can keep his kidney and I'm hoping the lesions on his lungs are GONE, from what I understand that's going to determine if he will need radiation or not. Jacob is scared for surgery, he remembers the recovery room and that's about it ,he says.. he's pretty nervous about going through that again.., but I told him they need to go in and get the nasty thing out so you can heal. And how much better he will feel too. The thing he hated the most was the catheter, don't blame him there! Unfortunately, it just part of it.

Jacobs treatment went pretty good today, this will mark number 5. He only had one medication today, but his blood count was a lot lower than they'd like. He's very anemic right now, the dr said it's somewhat expected due to his last treatment of 2 meds administered. He basically left it up to us if we wanted to see if jacob could get better on his own or go ahead and do a blood transfusion. We decided to see if his body will level itself, only because, his energy levels and Appetite are thru the roof! The dr said as long as his energy stays up and he's not complaining about a headache he should recover just fine... so one more treatment next Friday and then our CT scan is set for Tuesday the 15.. it's going to be pretty nerve racking to see what comes of this! He's doing good right now. He's soaking in a warm bath with lavender bubble bath and of course some pretty cool bath toys! He's asked for and help me make some hearty taco soup today so he can fill his little belly after his bath! He also lost 1lb, darn... but again, to be expected.. I'm just surprised because he's been eating so much! He's all set to go to that deer lease tomorrow afternoon too! This HAS got to be his day!

Absolutely! He's already at the taxidermy! Jacob has a spot picked out too on our wall. My husband is over there now skinning him and getting him ready to process.

I haven't updated in a while, things have been a little crazy around here. My husband came down with the flu on Monday so I've been on major cleaning and sanitizing duty! Keeping him isolated in our room... constantly washing hands and spraying lysol! Jacob goes in for his 6th and last scheduled chemo treatment, for the time being, tomorrow at 1pm. Then on Monday we go in for his scan to see what the chemo did. We should know something by the end of the day Monday or early Tuesday.. that's going to be a huge day for us, as we wait for results. That scan will determine our next step.. surgery will definitely follow to remove the tumor. We met with the radiation team and they are wonderful. They couldn't elaborate too much because everything is going to depend on the scan but the radiation will most likely be a daily treatment, which should only take a few minutes.

Oh I have been! I had to take my hubby to the dr yesterday, he wore a mask, I did too! I wear one each time I have to go into our room, then right to the hand sanitizer and sink to wash up. Can't take any chances on jacob or myself getting sick. I haven't slept in my bed in 5 days ... been on the couch ever since he starred complaining of not feeling good! I'm going to be brutally honest, I can't wait till that man feels better and goes back to work! Lol! My goodness, we all know the joke about how men act when they are ill... haha! Between him and Jacob needing something every 10 minutes I barely have time to use the restroom! I think I was able to ride once last week, maybe.. can't remember, but I know I did. I got out to the barn right after I dropped my other kids off at school, thankfully jacob and my husband were still sound asleep... I turned up my radio really loud in the barn and I just took my sweet time cleaning stalls and filling hay nets... and then I get the text from the house lol! My hubby is hungry ... wahhhhhhhh! Phew.. it was the best 17 1/2 minutes I've had this week to myself lol!!
