Location: Shawnee OK | Anyone have any ideas on making homemade ice boots?? My mare has swelling in her leg from her hock to her ankle (waiting on call from vet to hopefully get her into the vet but with Covid they are wanting pictures and go from there). Here is a little background on why the swelling, She cut her back right leg, small cut, really nothing to speak of, doctored it until it was healed about a week little more. Took her to the vet about 4 days into the cut doctoring because she started swelling from the hock all the way to her hoof. Vet looked at the cut said really nothing to worry about keep doing what I was doing, gave her antibiotic and bute, said if swelling did not go down let them know. Just finished the antibiotic after about a week and a half, went 2 days with no meds and boom, swelling comes back in the hock down to the ankle yesterday. So I did a poultice since I obviously could not get into the vet on a Sunday. Now waiting on call from the vet. So was sitting here thinking maybe I could try an ice boot to help with the swelling, just an idea don't know I am grasping at straws here. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT BASH ME, I am trying everything I know to take care of her, I am waiting on the vet to call back so don't start with go to the vet I am working on it. I am tryin to figure out what to do in the mean time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Location: Tulsa, Ok | I have not tried this, but it seems to me you could put shoofly boot on and drop crushed ice down in it. Not high tech but seems like it could work in a pinch. |

Yea, I bet that would work too with a little vetwrap as needed! I have also used those cooler packs (the soft ones that are kinda like gel in a bag to form around the leg) when in a pinch. You can probably get pretty macgyver with this one so please send us pictures of what you come up with and hope your girl starts feeling better soon. |

| I use to cut the bottom part of blue jean legs and poured ice down them or packs of frozen peas. At first I used vetwrap to wrap the bottom and top, then after I started using them so much I sewed velcro to them to close them up. It is crazy how denim holds in the cold and the timing of the melting process prevents tissue burn. |

| Get otterpops and use vet wrap or a polo wrap to secure them. Works great and you can stack them too! |

| I wet maxi pads and keep them in the freezer. Hold them in place with a sports boot like classic equine. You get about 30 minutes of cold. You can put one in each side of the leg. |

| Those fold up camp chairs tgat come in the nylon bag. Remove chair. Put foot in bag, fill with ice, close the drawstring top after filling with ice. |

| There is a wrap that comes in a plastic container and I want to say it's called " Cold flex" . They are reusable and you just put them in the frig. They pull heat away from the leg a s work great. About 9.00. |

Location: the land of dust & sticks | I used a gel ice pack from my chiropractor and a polo wrap. Worked great and stayed cold 30 mins or so |
