My mare fractured her hock. These two products (along with NutraWound) have been suggested. Would love input on these products. I know the TLC Equi-bone has been around for quite a while and the Osteon is fairly new...........but the Osteon is cheaper, as long as the Platinum Performance isn't also needed.

I'm not necessarily looking for cheaper....just want what works best.

Thanks!

If I had a horse with a fracture I would go with Platinum CJ and osteon.  You will only need to give 1/2 scoop morning and night if the osteon. Your horse will be getting everything needed for healing and for bone health.

I'll talk with the equine vet when I take her to Aiken later this week and see if he's familiar with both products. I can't afford to waste money right now, not that anyone can at any time, but money is tight.

I'm ordering her some PHT hock and leg wraps and will keep those on during the day.

It just so happens that I just asked my vet about a supplement to help my horse with a fractured Pastern. I did not add in the Equi bone as I have used that before on a navicular horse with  no visible help so was going a different route. I asked her about the Osteon verses Duraplex by Kentucky Equine Research. This was her response.

We do not have any personal experience with these products but I called the KER company and spoke with them about Duraplex. They made that supplement for racehorses going into training and being stalled continually. It is proven that horses that are stalled will loose bone density to some extent and their supplement gives extra minerals and vitamins to help counteract that and help with bone repair. They didn't study it in fracture cases but they think that it will help that bone reform. But that being said is it going to shorten his stall confinement and obviously speed the recovery? That is hard to say. There is a quote on their website from Dr. Duncan Peters (well respected Sports Medicine veterinarian) about how he always puts his post-surgical patients on it.

The platinum product only contains silicon to help with bone and cartilage so comparing the products the Duraplex gives you Calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, copper and zinc plus some vitamins which are essential for bone, ligaments and tendons. So I'd say you'd get more for your money with the Duraplex.
