Location: In the land of peanuts and cotton | Who makes the best horse blankets? My mare destroys them. I don't know if I'm better to buy a cheap one and buy a couple or try to find a good one she can't destroy. I bought her a new Turtle Neck blanket last year because supposably they were durable. She had holes in it within a week. I used it as long as i could but eventually i couldn't patch it anymore. So I gave her an old Weatherbeta I had and she proceeded to destroy it within a few weeks so I just got her a cheap one after that. |

| I just buy the ones on sale. I think the one at the trainers is a TOUGH 1. My horses tear them up pretty fast and they don't care what brand. I bought some MCALISTER TURNOUTS. They are kind of ugly so will probably last forever. |

I've thought about that but the coldest it will get regularly is mid to low 20s. Very rarely does it get below 20. |

Location: Ohio | I love sstack.com/Schneider's blankets. I think I have 7+ 1200D or higher count turnout blankets and only one has needed repaired so far (horse tore one of the belly straps in a freak accident). One of my favorites is the StormShieldยฎ Arctic Combo Turnout Blanket, it is a tough blanket! It's 1680d and has a 2 year warranty for $120. Their customer service is the best I have come across. Just ship it back and they will repair, wash and re waterproof it and get it shipped back really quickly. They also make a blanket called StormShieldยฎ Nordlund Combo Turnout Blanket that has even more heavy duty 1680d material and has a 3 year warranty for $150. |

Location: South of Canada and North of Mexico | Rambo, by far. They dont shift at all. I buy them used or new on ebay, usually much cheaper. My horses are HARD, somehow between the two they were able to get this pulled off over the head and played tug of war with it, straps were still hooked there was nothing wrong with the outside of this (BRAND NEW Wug) but the lining was trash. Bought a rambo liner and had it sewn in, works great still.

She's pulled hers off too. One night she pulled her full body slinky off but not her blanket. I can't even make that happen in my head. I assume she had "help" from one of the others. |

| What type of pen is she in?
I am having a hard time visualizing a horse destroying blankets that fast.
My horses are in barbed wire, with trees, and I have blankets over 8 yrs old. And I have blankets of all brands.
Kodak, and Pessoa are my two oldest, great quality
Gladiator one of my favorites for the price
Hugs are nice and don't shift much, they give the horses more freedom in the front
Amigo blankets, were the first one to tear
Mcallister I have a few that are 5 plus years old that have had minor repairs
My mini donkey gets an entire year out of his blanket and he catches the back on the fence each time he crawls through.
I also don't use the leg straps, my blankets fit my horses well, and if they are Houdini and I have had a few including my regular donkey, they haven't wrecked a blanket yet.
I would be trying to figure out why the horse is wrecking the blankets, is she itchy, does she have a fungus ex rain rot, girth itch, bugs ex lice, worms internal, or under the skin. Is she getting too hot?
Finding the root of the cause may save you money in the long run |

Our pasture is wooden fence on 2 sides and net wire(I think is what it's called) with a sting of barn wire on the top. Also has an electric fence along the wooden fence mainly to keep HER from pushing on the fence until she knocks it down and gets in with the cows but it doesn't work half the time. She's in a stall at night. They are made from 2x4s that stand vertically instead of horizontally like most stalls. It cost a whole lot more but don't have to replace them near as offer. Shes 9. I raised her since she was a weanling. She's always been like this. I'm just tired of buying blankets for her. She just pure hates a blanket. My other horses can be eating in their stalls while I put their on and never move but I have to get out and tie her or she will kick me and/or pin me aginst the stall wall. She has a bad attitude in general in a stall especially at feeding time. She only had 2 that were brand new. The rest were hand me downs from when the other horses would get new ones. |

| putting a sheet over the top wont add any extra warmth really. I put cheaper sheets over mine to protect them. My favorite sheet is a pro equine one. Not sure if they make blankets but thats been a good sheet!
Blankets I have had best of luck with are weatherbeeta. SmartPak makes a nice blanket also, |

SmartPak makes a nice blanket also, Smart Pak's are currently on sale AND free shipping. I just ordered my two new blankets... Now I sit and wait for them to rub up against the fence/gate/each other and shift them around to try and get them off.
Last year I got "smart" and bought a closed front blanket and hood for my Gelding... I still haven't found the hood... But the front of the blanket sewed up so nice and clean I was able to get $25 for it on a facebook sale

Some horses don't grow a typical winter coat, and still don't need to be blanketed.
I live in Alberta and have -40 weather, I have two horses that their hair doesn't grow long, but it does get thicker. When I am not riding I don't blanket.
I only keep the horses I ride blanketed not so much for the cold, but because of the snow, each time we brush them and use the saddle pads, we are removing the oils that repel water, then the snow and water can get into their coat and cause the horse to get cold.

| I bought a nice fly sheet with nice belly band. It was trash in less than 24 hours. Lightweight turnouts about 48 hours. I feel lucky if mine last 2 weeks. |
