Location: Cocoa, Florida | I have two mares that had itchy mane, tails and allergies. I started giving them Benadryl every morning and I've seen huge improvement, in coats, tail and coughing. It's been very dry down here until the last couple of days.
Does anyone else give Benadryl daily and is it safe to give it to them for longer periods of time? |

| I surely do!!! I have one with dust allergies and if it's a bad day he gets 7-10 of them every 8 hours. Works great! |

| I used to until my vet flipped out when I told him. Supposedly Benadryl is a hallucinogen to horses, he had experiences where the horses had bad dreams and were climbing the walls. |

What???? Really!!!! That's crazy, well I give them every am and aside from maybe making them a little drowsy (which may be good for traveling and nerves) I've never seen any strange behavior from them, I'll have to research that more! |

I never had a negative experience with Benadryl, but after he told me that I haven't used it since, I have bad enough luck I don't need to tempt fate. |

| I give it to one of my dogs. He only gets half a pill. So for horses, how many pills do you give for it to be effective? |

| I looked up Benadryl dosages for horses in two different veterinary prescribing manuals and neither mention any side effects other than lethargy. I have used it for years. Maybe my good horses think they are super man and incapable of losing. lol |

Location: Opelousas, LA | We did and it worked great when nothing else was helping, no adverse effects at all. We eventually had to quit using it because of drug testing and not knowing what the withdrawal period was for Benadryl given orally over several weeks. We went to ACTH gel and it helped but not as much as the Benadryl, we ended up turning the horse out for the rest of the summer and put him back on Benadryl. We couldn't race him but at least he was happy and comfortable. |

Location: Montana | Can you use the benadryl cream on horses? The mosquitoes and flies are bad already this year, and the spray doesn't seem to help a lot. I feel sorry for my horses because they itch so bad (especially the 2 year old, my 15 year old doesn't seem to be as bothered) and I'm almost considering a feed through fly control because I don't know what else to do. |

| Friend had a POA that was allergic to shavings and vet prescribed 8 pills to treat it everytime she had to be stalled and it worked great, http://equimed.com/drugs-and-medications/reference/diphenhydramine this article shows no side effects about bad side affects other than sedation which is another use for it. I did find it interesting that it can thicken the mucus in the respritory tract so probably not something you'd want to use in a horse with IAD ect |

Location: SE KS | I will have to check on this, but I thought Animed had a product for "allergies" in horses. I have used their products & like them, plus they aren't too expensive. |

You are correct. It's called Ani-hist. It's an herbal powder. |

| I bought the big 1000 count bottle of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) from Amazon for 30.00 I think. Each capsule is 200mg so 4x the Benadryl human capsules. I just pull open 5 capsules and pour powder on feed. Easy peasy. One jar lasts months.
Oh and I bought a jar of the Animed anti hist and my pig of a horse won't come within 5 miles of it.
