This is just a general question because I have never had anyone other than a vet float my horses' teeth... What drugs do equine dentists use to sedate the horses?

Complain to your elected officials!!!! Find out who they are, start a letter writing a campaign, picket in front of their offices, start a petition. Contact every single one the newspapers and television stations in your area. Make this a huge deal. We have just as many supports as PETA does, but we never get organized and take a stand, so no ever hears our side!!!!This is the time, and this might as well be the first issue we take on!!

Medical doctors don't have to go to school to be a dentist, a dentist doesn't have to go to school to be a medical doctor. Why do they keep messing with this whole vet / equine dentist deal?????
Just so happens my vet is both a DVM & a certified equine dentist, but there are quite a few other equine dentists in our area and one I know out Utah way that are pretty darn good that aren't DVM's. Most the vets I know hate to work on teeth.
I agree with the earlier poster......next they'll go after the farriers.

cowgirlup2007 - 2009-03-05 12:41 PM I'm a dentist too, but i dont think I know him. And yes this has to stop, they are trying to make it a law in TX now that you have to be a vet to do dentistry, which makes no sense at all, because you dont take a dentistry class what so ever in vet school, but they are certifed to do all the dentistry work. So equine dentist today have to be very careful, because of this reson.
I thought about this when you went to work under randy.... I hope for you and everyone sakes this will be worked out... I think its BS.... there are so many vets that are so clueless to anything that has to do with a equine... so how does that make him do a better job on my horse... speaking of horses...

Thanks for letting us know about this RoanRobey....I've written to every one of the tv stations you listed. Now I am going to write my representatives......I respect vets for what they do, but they do not specialize in all areas. It is my right to choose....here is what I wrote, feel free to copy it if anyone wants to, but try to revise it some so it doesn't look so much like a cookie cutter statement..
The outlawing of equine dentistry in Oklahoma (and other states) is wrong! It should be up to me as a horse owner who works on my horses...you don't go to the MD to get your teeth cleaned. Why should you go to the vet for your horses teeth when there are highly-trained individuals who specialize. What next the farrier? The equine dentist who was arrested today is an upstanding individual who is a wonderful family man, and as honest as the day is long.....if someone is out chasing the equine dentists, who is out chasing the rapists, petafiles, and drug dealers?
God Bless this family and what they are going thru. I know several in this family.

OHMIGOSH!!! This is horrible, for the person "not named" and for US that want the best care for our horses! My vet doesn't WANT to do teeth - he is DELIGHTED that I have (had) someone else that specializes in that willing to do it! Arghhh!

This is the problem .....those that do sedate the client's horses are in fault....this also includes farriers who think they have the right to sedate client's horses.

Snapple - 2009-03-05 11:56 AM To me an equine dentist is the same as a dentist for humans and I don't think they have to be a doctor either do they?
PLEASE tell me you are kidding! I'm trying very hard not to take offense to all of the horribly rude comments being posted. My husband is a dentist and yes, he is a doctor!!! He went to school for 4 years after college and is a Doctor of Dental Surgery.
Equine dentists do NOTHING of the sort!!! They are not even close to having the same education as my husband. They go to a trade school to learn to float teeth.
I am NOT implying that equine dentists are not good at what they do, but the major issue that I have yet to read on this post (I haven't made it all the way through) is the SEDATIVES that are used. You must be a licence veterinarian to dispense and use them. That is what 99% of the controversy is about.
My FIL is an equine veterinarian and he did supply a equine dentist with sedatives for a short time. Not all veterinarians are the bad guys and some are as good or better at teeth.
Based on the near loss of my horse from a sedation gone bad, I will not let anyone administer those types of drugs to my horse again that could not also save her life in an emergency (i.e. my licensed veterinarian, who is also a REAL doctor).

I sincerely hope that people do not believe all of the things that they read on this board. Do your own research.

dawnb - 2009-03-05 1:13 PM Minn. has the law to you have to be Vet to work on horses teeth.
In many states it is... I know it is here in Arkansas, but there are still many people that do it. My denist is also my horse shoer and I would never let any one else work on my horses teeth. He is not a licenced vet.
In Arkansas it is also a law that to be a 'chiropractor' you have to either be a licensed vet or a licensed human chiro! People get around that by saying they are 'equine massage therapists'.
I do not think it's right that they take someone to jail for this, or that it is a felony (I think if they get caught it should just be a fine).

I am not familiar with the Oklahoma law, but I should be since I am an Okie horse owner. Is the problem that he is not certified? Or is the problem that he is not a licensed veterinarian? If the problem is the certification, why does he not get the certification? I'mnot attacking, just want tolearn about the law so I can sound educated when I do make some noise! By the way, nobody does teeth better than OSU - they are incredible. I also feel better that the horse is in a vet's care in case anything goes wrong. I once had a horse sedated at OSU that reacted very badly - he flipped out and started having seizures. He would have died if it had been at home. He had had his teeth floated many times before, but a different sedative was used.
