Came up to get thermometer, should I not give antibiotics in there is no fever? Or should I err on the side of caution and give her some SMZs?

I dont know about that but our colt has a snotty nose but its because of the pollen we need some rain to knock it down. But if it was pollen you would see it in the snot.

Not sure if I want to examine the snot that closely.  She is running and bucking this morning.

Silver Lining Herbs #25 Infection Fighter is great for snotty noses. We had a respiratory thing go through our mares last spring with the same thing, heavy snot and lethargic acting. By the time we caught the first mare, it was too late as all of them drink from the same trough. Three days of infection fighter and they were back to normal! It's something that is good to have around the barn for many issues. My barrel mare came in last Thursday with her right knee up to the top of her forearm swollen about twice the normal size and it has some heat in it. Not really sure where it came from or why, but put her on the infection fighter for 3-4 days and bingo............back to normal! It can also be used for foot abcess, really any type of infection issue. It's also natural.  PM me for more info.

I already have the SMZs and I know they work.  Don't want to spend money or wait on other treatments.  Waiting on my number one helper to hold the foal while I take her temp.

I personally would not give the antibiotics until you know for sure if there is a bacterial infection present.  Please keep in mind the problems associated with antibiotic resistance that occurs when drugs are misused.

If the runny nose is viral, the antibiotics won't help.  If the nasal drainage is clear, it most likely is a response to environmental factors, i.e. pollen, allergies, etc.  If the drainage is yellow, that is a definite indicator of bacterial infection and the drugs would be warranted.

Hope this info helps with your decision-making.

This is what I've been dealing with, I finally broke down and called the vet...they are coming out today, both of my horses have had snotty noses now for almost 4 weeks, had a cough in the beginning too...I put them on the SMZ's for 5 days, didn't work....they haven't gone off their grain and are not running temps but I've let enough time gone by for it to clear up on its own so its time to support my local veterinarian once again!! Probably put them on penecillan...ugh...thats not going to be fun...

That is what I was just going to say!  There is soooo much antibiotic resistance anymore....it truly is scary.  I have experienced it myself here........needless to say I will not use them anymore unless I am told to by the vet.  Our vet usually tells us that the snotty noses are usually a virus that needs to run its course......SMZs won't help that anyway.

Yes, I am against over use of antibiotics.  Sometimes its a hard call when you are out in the middle of nowhere.  Can't even haul this one in as her mom is too crippled to ride in a trailer.  She had no fever, feels good so I am taking the wait and see approach.  Don't know what she could have picked up as isolated as she is.

I understand!  I am 40 miles one way from the closest decent vet!

I bet she will be just fine, since she is tearing around and feeling good already.

With the goofy weather we have been having where I live,  I am suprised all my foals have stayed healthy.  We have had a lot of trouble with calves so that makes up for it.

Try being 120 miles, guess that will change soon.  Not all the things about leaving here will be bad if I can just find pasture for my ponies.  We have not hauled to any barrel races nor brought any horses in since early May so maybe it is just dust and the crazy weather.  Ours has been that way too.
