It's not illegal. I dont know who would have told you that. However, there are a lot of lay-people claiming to be dentists that have no medical background or training. That is illegal.
Need to know what part in order to give you names.

I've heard it's illegal if they are not a DVM. If they use drugs to sedate, they must be a DVM, or it's illegal...at least here. If they're not licensed, there is no liability to them if something happens to the horse.

Whether they have been to school or not, certified or not, it is illegal for someone to practice equine dentistry without a veterinarian license in the state of GA.

Dr. Febles is my equine dentist but she is in McDonough, she probably doesn't travel that far but pm me if you want her number. Also Mandy Jo Brooks is a dentist now, I would need to find her info. I'm not sure where she is located now.

There was a big uproar about a man coming from Tx to practice because he was not licensed to practice in Ga. I heard he was really good, but I dont know his name.

Then how is all these people calling them selves Equine Dentist when its illegal if they are not vets? All of this confuses me.....
They can call themselves equine dentist and practice all day long until they get caught. Whether they get caught depends on how diligent GA is about pursuing the law. I do understand they have cracked down on at least one layperson dentist in GA, not sure the specifics. Until now they really have not been proactive about it. Equine chiropractics unless performed by a licensed veterinarian or a licensed human chiropractor under veterinarian supervision with a client, patient relationship established is also considered illegal in GA. Again the law is there which makes it illegal, just not necessarily enforced to any degree. Also there is a risk for you as a horse owner using someone that is practicing illegally, you do not have any recourse for damages if harm is done to your horse through an illegal practice.

Frankly I think this is a bunch of crap....the horse owners should be able to let whoever they want work on there horses....If they feel they are qualified enough regardless of a licenses........

lmbo Have none of you ever done anything illegal? Speeded, drove without your seatbelt etc. I see illegal crap on the news everyday & there all getting away with it. At least lay dentists are doing something for the greater good. And school or no school, what? I'd like to know the person working on my horse had some knowledge about what he's doing. Ha Ha and do you really think if something happened to your horse @ the vet that you would have any recourse? The vet board (the people the clients complain to) are there to protect the vets not you. Who do you think came up with the idea of a vet board. The vets. It's a buffer. What they do teach in vet school is how to tell you "your horse had a reaction to the sedation". You must prove negligence on the veternarians part. Have yall ever heard of a client trying to sue or take any legal action against a vet and win! On the other hand I so love my vets. Great guys that know there stuff and are also big enough to know they don't know teeth like my dentist. And this fight has been going on for over 12 yrs some states supreme court wont even make a ruleing wether it's legal or illegal cause they don't know which jurisdiction it goes in. I don't believe it will be solved in my lifetime so when I die & go to the gates of heaven & the lord asks me what good I did in my life with these animals he put in my care I want to be able to say "I did everything I could to take care of them whether it was legal or illegal." Be proactive stand up for your lay dentist. Also you can pm me I know some dentists in GA. And this is jmo each person has to listen to there own small still voice & let that lead them.

Here is the thing on equine dentists, some states do not allow dentists to practice without a vet present. I think it is a move for the vets to protect some of their "area of expertise" My feeling, however is that when spend money to get my horses in top shape, I take them to THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB. I have a great vet who does all my lameness exams, treatment, etc, but would never take my horse to her to get their teeth worked on or their chiropractic issues resolved. I use my dentists who have been in a horses mouth 1000x more than a vet and know teeth and the mouth and how it is supposed to work inside and out. It is just like for you; if you have a toothache are you going to head to the doctors office or to your dentist? I would just find the best person for the job and not be loud about it. Get your horses taken care of and get a great dentist. It should be up to us as horse owners to provide the best care for the animal. Not up to states and vet boards.

See if you can get ahold of Dr. Tucker. You can find him online by searching "Dr Tucker Equine Dentist" on google - first website that pops up. He's amazing, and comes up from Florida to do our horses every 6 months. He goes all over the country and I know he's up north now, but is probably hauling down south soon, so get ahold of him!
