Well since I am a born and bred Texan I would have to say TEXAS!! I live in Central Texas (close to Fort Hood). We can pretty much ride year round and there is always somewhere within an hour of me that I could go and compete every weekend. And a huge plus for your situation, there are about 6 state prisons right up the road in Gatesville that are always hiring. I think houses in my area are still very reasonable in price. I bought a 1500sq ft brick house with 4 acres for 89,000. Down side is that it gets FREAKIN HOT in the summer.

Oregon. Eastern Oregon to be exact. I wouldnt want to live on the west side of the Cascades. Way to wet and dreary on the west side and an over population of bizarr depressed people. Most likely due to all the cloudy wet gloomy days. Eastern Oregon is stunningly beautifull, 300+ days of sun a year. World class hay and grazing second to none. ALOT of rodeo's and barrel races and there are more cows then people.HUGE ranches, world class fishing and hunting, and alot of outdoor sports and recreation. The western coastal states have more PRCA tour rodeo's then anywhere else and Eastern Oregon is easy fast access to the entire western states. Alot of ammy rodeo's also and many different ammy rodeo associations. There IS a reason they all migrated west and hit the Oregon Trail back in the day.

lmzwigar - 2010-02-19 5:01 PM My husband and I are playing around with the idea of moving away. We lie in NC right now and it is very populated and there aren’t the rodeos that are out west. What state do you think are the best to live in and/or have horses and barrel race? Give me reasons why you think it is the best and maybe one reason why someone may not want to live there. Also any tips on how to make a big move/relocation like this. He is a correctional officer and we feel pretty certain we can find a prison that needs an officer in any state and I have BA in Animal Science.
OKLAHOMA - Rodeos and barrel racing anyday of the week, and my place is for sale click on the ad below.. plus the best thing!! I'm 8 miles from the OK State Penn ( he can get a job close to home)where they have the rodeo behind the walls.. actually this coming year unless they can find some extra money there wont be a rodeo...this year would be 70 years... You get to race against the best in the country here in McAlester, well in Oklahoma... I am moving only because my hubby passed a few years ago and I dont have any family here, I want to relocate to my daughters in TX.. we moved here from NJ 5 years ago, didnt have a plan, sold our place there purchased this place, came without jobs, but we all found jobs in McAlester very quickly... the move was easy for us...

Cowgirl2688 - 2010-02-19 6:59 PM Eastern Kansas!! There is a prison in Leavenworth that is about 45 minutes from Kansas City so you could live in a small town outside of Leavenworth and he could work at the prison and you could live out in the country but still be only a little ways from the bigger cities. I've been all over the country and I truly believe that Kansas/Oklahoma/Missouri people and the Dakotas (but I would never live there) are the friendliest people around. Kansas is pretty cheap to live in- my S.O. and I rented a pretty nice two bedroom house, in town though, for $400. It's not bad in the summers- 70s, 80s and 90s, and gets a little cold in the winters but there are a few warmer days throughout (20s - 50s). If you're looking for cheap- we found a semi-nice house and 40 acres in S.E. Kansas for $60,000. Up around the KC area there are jackpots and rodeo assoc.'s all over, the same with the S.E. area. I always thought that I'd really love living in Texas.. well we moved down there in August and we're moving back to Kansas this week. Living costs are extremely expensive and where we lived it was either a gazillion degrees out or it rained everyday.. so not very ideal for riding outside. There are a lot of rodeos to go to but there are plenty in most all of the other midwest states too. Hope I helped a little bit and where ever you move to you love it!
Where was this at?? Wonder if it's still available....SO is wanting to buy a fixer upper.....

After living in Southern California my whole life, I don't see how the benefits of any of those places can outweigh freezing my butt off half the year.. haha. I do love our weather! We just had a couple days in the 80s and are now whining because we're supposed to get like 3 days of rain. Even though it obviously isn't going to be as cheap as a lot of other states, there are actually parts of California that are reasonably priced, especially right now. We also aren't all the kind of people you see on tv in California. I can usually find a barrel race within about an hour of me on any given weekend (year-round) and there are a few places that do time onlys during the week.
It does get HOT, but if I had to pick another state to live in, it would be AZ!! I'd rather be hot than cold!!

I live in SE Oklahoma, close to where Turn3turnsok's place is just north of McAlester. I love it here. The weather is very mild in the winter and you can ride pretty much all year around. It does get hot in the summer, but not nearly as hot at TX, plus, we have a huge lake (3rd largest man made lake in the US) a 30 minute drive away, so we spend a lot of the hot summer days there. McAlester is booming, and is the home of the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, and also minimum security Jackie Brannon Correctional Center, which is where my husband works. We have lots of jackpots, rodeos, and are within 2 hours driving of most of the huge D super shows. Plus, the weather and terrain is much like North Carolina, so you'd feel right at home. Lots of friendly people.

No one mentioned Ohio. We are the Buckeye State.............so I guess we're nuts? Not even sure if a buckeye is a nut? We have prisons for the bad nuts. If you're in the NE you gets lots of lake effect snow.....right Jake? I live in the NW section and the rest of the nuts have been hogging the snow. We have Cedar Point on Lake Erie (north), Kings Island near Cincinnati (south) and All American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus (middle). Pretty moderate temps here........according to many of us.

California!! or Nevada, close to California! Lol
Ok, I'm from the rainiest part of Oregon, and it is really nice besides the rain...if you have a place with an indoor arena and some mud control, it a great (which my dad has neither...)
it gets to be around 100 degrees for a week or two in the summer, people around here love snow, because we get it once a year, and if it is more than a foot, people think there was a blizzard..lol
it is green and from where I am, within a couple hours I can ride at the beach, in the mountains, by a river, or on flat...
NO SALES TAX...lol...and I can go to a different state and not have to pay it on most everything too
I like it hot, and I don't like rain, that is what draws me to California :)
Not as many barrel races as in Texas, but if I was willing to drive 3 hours, I could go to a BUNCH of races and rodeos, there is a race every weekend (and during the week too) within an hour of me...

Just north of Fort Scott. There was also a nice house next to that one with 80 acres for 160K I believe and another we looked at last year with 40 acres a pretty nice older house and a few barns for 140K. Fort Scott is a good town to rodeo or barrel race out of- you can go to MRCAs and ACRAs and there is a weekly jackpot an hour east of there on Wednesdays. It's not the nicest town in my opinion but then again, I am moving back there so take that for what it's worth lol
