To give you a little bit of background, I have a 6yr old. He was started late in his 4 yr old year just to be broke. Ive finally been able to 'run' him through the barrels, take him to shows, and enter him, etc.. So I started noticing that he was 'off' somehwere not physically lame but something was bothering him. I turned him out for a couple of weeks but something is still wrong. I made an appointment with him to be worked on by my chriropractor next wednesday. Anyways, today when I went out to feed I noticed he had an odd sweat mark on his right shoulder. It's probably 3 inches under his 'waves' and it goes all the way down into his triceps but no sweat on his chest area whatsoever. On his other shoulder he had only a little but of sweating on his tricep but nothing like on the other shoulder. Could this mean that hes in pain in that area? I remember being told tha if a horse is sweating in a specific area when not being worked or hot (besides on the obvious shoulder line, chest, flank and between their back legs) that they are sore and in pain in that area. Could that be the case here?

I have had two different horses with weird sweat patterns and both were cured with accupuncture. I can't remember exactly what the accupuncture vet said it was caused from - but it worked!

I would consider nerve damage or nerve issues...
but weird sweat paterns are usualy a sign that "something" isnt right with the branches of nerves in that area...
horses with Woblers, EPM, trauma to the area, pinched nerves in the spine, neuro issues...etc... will all show weird sweat patterns.... I would consider it to be not an emergency, but would certainly get a vet apointment asap...
I have had two neuro horses have one of the first signs be strange sweat paterns... I have a 3 year old right now that has a hole in the muscle from an injury as a weanling.... he sweats in a 10 inch by 10 inch pattern all around that hole at all the time... its "nerves" not working right.....
wanted to add... If I had a horse with weird sweat patterns, AND the "offness" you have described for a while.. I would be getting a IFAT panel from UC davis, just to rule out EPM.....ASAP

ditto on the test, we lost one that had "weird" sweat pattern, and seemed muscle loss over shoulder. Live and learn, epm can be so crazy. Since then, we have treated our other 2 for it,, good luck!

i would also check about anhydrosis. i had one that start with weird sweat pattern, hair coat went poor, and odd lil sores before we diagnosed her. accupuncture and one AC and she was cured. we had a terribly hot summer last yr. i have already prepared her for the summer and she is still sweating great.

Thanks. I'll bump this up one more time for the morning crowd.
When I go see my vet should I ask for any tests in particular or just tell her how hes been sweating and let it go from there?
request the IFAT panel from UC davis...you can google IFAT panel UC davis, and it will take you right to the submission form... print that off... circle IFAT PANEL telly our vet to draw blood and send in....
if you have a negative then look for other reasons... but EPM can cause permanant damage FAST...so you want to not drag that one out... get it done, then move on to "other reasons"...

I have a 14-yr old Gelding that will sweat on the left side of his neck while standing in the stall in the middle of winter. It is not nearly as bad in colder weather but in the summer, it is much more noticeable.
My vet looked at him and said it was nothing more than a pinched nerve somewhere up by the poll that connects to a network of nerves in that area. With these nerves being impacted, it essentially shuts off the "stop sweating" capabilities for the sweat glands in that area. He said there is nothing that can be done to fix it....just live with it.
For what it's worth, he is running and turning better this year than any other time i've had him in the last 10-yr's.
If you find anything other than what I have been told, let us know.

Your vet could be right...especialy with YOUR horse... but what people need to remember is that "irregular sweat patterns" is a sign of nerve damage....
be it from being piched, injured, parasite, disease, brain swelling...etc....
what you see is the Symptom... what you need to be sure of is the CAUSE....
your "cause" with your horse may bee 100% accurate... but there are so many "causes" you need to be sure before you ignore it.... and it turns into a crippled horse....

If your going to the vet, go here, www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/vmth/small_animal/laboratory/pdfs/epmsample.pdf
print off this form....have it with you... and if he thinks for one second it might be neuro, tell him there IS a GOOD diagnostic tool for EPM, and draw the blood and send it in.... DO NOT do the WB test...just the IFAT panel.... there are MANY reasons for nerve issues... but its best to get to the bottom of it...

My mare sweat really weird, almost not at all last fall. It was freaking me out because she'd get patches in the oddest areas under the saddle pad. Pretty much she just sweat a softball sized mark under the corner of the pad that hangs down. I questioned it because there was no reason to just sweat there- there was no pressure from the saddle and the pad didn't rest completely against her skin at that part.
I took her to the chiro and the lady started to work on her. She then turned and asked "Does your horse sweat weird?" She then went to explain how because my mare's neck was so out the nerves along her C3 vertebrae were having pressure put on them causing her to sweat in patches. Fixed her all up and she has sweat normally since!
I'd have a chiro look at the horse (:
