yesterday I went to a barrel race, warmed my mare up, and by the time I got off she was in a full body lather. I mean dripping sweat everywhere especially her neck! there was foam dripping down her tack. I did not warm her up that hard, trotted and loped circles each way. she wasnt even breathing that hard, just sweating sooo much. I took her to trailer and tried to wipe the sweat off with a towl and I gave her electrolites and water. she is not in the greatest shape, but she is def. not in bad shape and yesterday it was warmer than it has been but it has been that warm all week and she didnt sweat this much.......... any ideas, is there something wrong with her?

Do you compete a lot on this mare? I've known horses to "wash out" for fear of pain. If your routine at the barrel race is the same as at home, I would definatly look for other issues. Horses that are not "in shape" will foam until conditioned then they will have a "clean " sweat.

"wash out" is a term that is used to describe  horse that causes itself to sweat because internally its going a million miles an hour (externally too)....usually ending up in a white foamy sweat in spots.

just because the horse isn't prancing or jittering doesnt mean the horse is calm inside. horses with bad ulcers and pain issues will tend to wash out.

i have a similar issue, not only at competitions, but also at the barn. even if its 50 degrees outside, if we ride for 30 minutes he is drenched. he is a very nervous horse and is now being treated for ulcers so i hope this helps the problem. i am also going to try using a calming supplement to take some of his nervousness away. we will see what happens...

I'm in the same boat,  4 yr old that sweats so bad and not breathing hard and not the foam.  I wonder what he'll be like when summer gets here.
Could it be feed related?

thats what i thought, so i switched feed that helped calm a nervous horse and it still did nothing! and that was last summer...so its not a feeding issue for my horse it must be psychological
