My barrel horse thinks its nice to drag me back to the pasture. I have tried yanking on him really hard a few times and that doesnt work he still drags me to the pasture. How can i fix this? He has no other behavior issues. This is his only one.

Walking or riding? I have always learned make him work (longe) in the area he wants to go an rest and relax him in the area you want to go. Once he figures out he's gotta work where he wants to go he' ll be more inclined to follow you!;)

Anytime my horses get ahead of me, I stop, and if they don't stop at the same time I do, they back up to get in line with me. Usually the way I teach this is I do a lot of stopping, and then take my elbow and hit their shoulder with it repeatedly till they are far enough back. I'll even swing a the end of the lead rope or have a small dressage whip with me if I need to get my point across. You just kinda push your elbow back into them and they learn real quick. With my young mare because I know she's safe and won't hurt me, but if she gets really wanting to go somewhere, I just stop in front of her and ram my butt backwards into her chest. I will do this anywhere. Home, shows... You name it.

All our horses usually come in with terrible ground manners, but all the ones I work with, I use this, and I get compliments on how good their manners are. If a horse walks on top of you, you can also start randomly flapping like a chicken. I'll even act like I'm spooking at something (drop down quick) just so my horses know to pay attention to me and that it usually is for nothing. Lunging can work well too especially if its from a lack of respect.

If my horses are not respecting me on the lead line. I get them to do circles around me, I will change direction so I don't get dizzy. I also make the stop and back them up till I say otherwise.

Make sure you have all the time in the day as once you get in a hurry they have won.

Make sure u have a small diameter rope halter or to lead him use a hard rope nose band. I had one that would jump out of a stall i looped a long rope around one of post on the stall door and had my lead rope when she would jump i would grab say whoa and when she did not listen the second rope stopped her dead a couple of times like that she started to,listen to me. When i bought she was shipped to me she drugged the shipper alway to my barn and she was three. First time i saddled her went to the offside to put a girth on saddle she pushed me against the wall i squeezed arond her snugged the girth and found me a crop walked around her laid that crop across her big ass abput 3 times she did do that again. We had daily lesson for about a month on leading and moving around and that was before it was popular.

He ALWAYS stops right when i stop. And if he's ahead of me, he backs up till his nose is even with my shoulder. And believe me i have elbowed him in the shoulder in the chest and everything. And my horse NEVER spooks. I use him for mounted shooting and he did police search and rescue. He is completely bomb proof. ive tried acting like im spooking and he just looks at me like woman what the hell are you doing. And ive tried acting like a chicken. and he just stands there. This horse has to put up with 9 year old twins and a 5 year old. He doesnt spook. And same here I know he is safe and wont hurt me on purpose. And lunging hasnt helped him. he goes right back to walking on top of me. Idk what to do. I know its lack of respect from him.

I dont have a rope halter that fits his big ass head. I think he has these lack of respect issues because he walk gelded VERY late, when he was 12 and hes 22 now and he was used for breeding. And his old owner didnt believe in yanking on him or any physical discipline. So hes gotten away with alot. And he never dares to squish me between anything cuz last time he did i couldnt move so he got a good hard kick to his stomach.

Sounds like your horse doesn't respect you. You need to spend a lot of time doing nothing but ground work in the round pen. Feel free to PM me.

Clinton Andeson halter with the pressure point knots. When he starts to drag you pop him a couple times and I guarantee he'll stop.
If you have tried everything else suggested, stud chain but only if you know how to correctly use it.

I use a stud chain over the nose, along w the regular lead rope, one lead n each hand, a few times n that usually fixes the issue.
