I don't know, but presumably they were originally bread to protect flocks, from both humans and large predators, so they must have inherent advantages. A good ratio of size, power, speed, and fitness (as long as you get one with ok hips.)
The mental association with ferocity and chasing must help too. Whereas a Rottie is perhaps very good at looking ferocious and guarding, but less perhaps less associated with the chase, being a fairly thickset dog.
