Interested in finding my dad a trail riding saddle. He has been using my 16" original Bob Marshall. But he just trail rides. Would a Hilason work for that or do I need to look into trying to find a nice used BM??

If it was me, I would try to find him a nice used BM. They hold their value, unlike a Hilason, so if you or he decided to sell it later, it wouldn't be a huge loss. It will also last longer than the Hilason, as the quality of the leather, etc. is so much better. There's nothing I like about a Hilason saddle, but I love a Bob Marshall. I saw a really nice 16" on the Treeless Saddles for sale page on Facebook yesterday. A used BM, though, is probably going to cost a lot more than a Hilason.

I've seen pictures of torn down Hilasons. You want your dear old dad to be riding leather not cardboard.

I see a lot of people looking for "cheap" saddles to "just trail ride" in and I shake my head - just trail ride...sit on your horses back for hours vs 30-45min of ring work, potentially going up and down hills, in various weather conditions if a rain shower pops up or you have to go across water and your saddle gets wet. Quality saddles are going to keep your horse comfortable and last through these conditions with good care. Low quality is not going to last the same, get stuff and brittle or crack and rip.

Look for a Bob Marshall or a used circle y even. The Tammy's have a nice high supportive back as well.

I would go for a Bob Marshall. The Hilason a friend bought was a huge waste of money.

Do you have pictures??? I've always wondered what a treeless saddle looks like when it's torn apart!
