Location: London Ontario | I had my massage therapist out over the weekend and he mentioned I should be adding a high protein/amino acid feed to her diet to help with muscle gain. He mentioned he doesn't like how much muscle definition there is when she is standing still?
I am clueless when it comes to feed so can anyone recommend anything?
I need to be able to get it in Canada and it cant make her hot. She is currently being treated on THE's GastroPlus(no sweet feeds), along with a pound of triple cleaned whole oats a day as well as a pound of alfalfa pellets soaked a day(split between two feedings). I also throw in MSM, salt and she gets 3/4 of a bucket(after soaking) timothy/alfalfa hay cubes. She then gets unlimited access to second and third cut timothy/alfalfa hay on dawn to dusk turnout, and just under half a flake of the same hay in her stall(from big square bale)
So what would help? She is a very lean OTQH 4 yr old to begin with...Thanks all! |

Location: Bastrop, TX | Although she is getting all the alfalfa/hay fiber she needs, I don't think one pound of oats has enough protein to help her. I take it that you can't or do not want her on a sweet feed. Heck if my horse has as much alfalfa you're feeding he would fly. LOL.... some can handle it others can't. I'm not sure if you can get it or not but we feed Purina Strategy Healthy Edge. It is a pelleted feed. My horses are muscled, fat and healthy on it. I feed it to a yearling, 2 yr old, 4 yr old and 6 yr old. My 6 yr old got too fat and muscled on it feeding one regular scoop twice a day and free choice coastal hay, no alfalfa and we cut him back to 1/2-3/4 scoop twice a day. My 4 yr old gets full scoop twice a day with alfalfa because he is getting worked more. There are a lot of good higher protein feeds out there but I am just thinking you may need to up the amount if you like what your feeding in the oats.

| I have always wanted to try Progressive Nutrition's Topline Xtreme. Its like $120 here and I don't know how long the bucket is supposed to last. I have a thin OTQH mare also. Let me know if you find something that works.

If you don't mind , how much do you pay for your strategy healthy edge? |

Location: Alabama | With all that alfalfa I bet she is getting plenty of protein. If I added anything it would be lysine. |

| Equitop myoplast you have to get it from the vet, costs approx 90/month, it has done great things for my horses with healing tissue. It is advertised to help muscle gain, and top line.
Also remember some horses may not have the muscle definition, or the muscle they do have doesn't bulk up.
Also watch the high protein diet as it can cause kidney stones

| First of all, if the horse is a leaner built horse, you cannot build muscle. If the horse comes from stocky type parents then two things will help. First, a 14% protein pelleted feed help develop muscle. I feed a fairly inexpensive feed that is made at a local mill. ( been in business since 1938 and I am sure not available in Canada) If you can get Nutrena products I would look into them. Just make sure that you feed enough. I feed Platinum Performance and top dress with Cocosoya for the Omegas-3, 6, 9. the second thing that builds muscle is riding. Exercise is hard to beat.
I have a leaner built filly that I sent to a trainer, she gets ridden everyday and the change is amazing. |

Agree with Cheryl, I love the equitop myoplast and you can get it in Canada. Made a huge change in my smaller appendix mare. Phase it into the diet slowly, it does smell a bit weird as it contains algae I believe. |

Location: North Dakota | Switching to whole oats, alfalfa, and flax has helped SO MUCH with muscling my man up. Mine gets 2lbs oats and 4lbs straight alfalfa cubes split into 2 feedings. Maybe just try upping your ration a bit. If he starts getting hot or chubby then back off and try something else. IMO the "OAF" diet is unbeatable though. |

| My horse list all his top line muscling when I fed him processed feeds. It came back somewhat on an alfalfa pellets, oats and Renew Gold program and Gastroade because a vet/chiro said she felt he had digestive upset of some kind but it was still not enough, so I changed to Omni cubes and free choice grass hay and I treated him for ulcers with Cur Ost Stomach and the Adapt for 2 months, then put him on their Total and man, have I got a new horse! He has good muscling all along his spine and over his loin, croup and hip. He looks and feels great |

Rice bran & soybean meal are good for top lines & muscling too.
