I have a bad habit of snatching my horse's face at the beginning of the turns, and guiding him on the backside. He knows his job, I'm just having a hard time getting out of this habit during a run. I don't do it when we slow work at home, so I don't know why I'm doing it at races.

I used to be this way when I was a kid. My mom attached my reins to rubber bands !! Big thick ones. They wouldn’t break with normal help in a turn but if you snatch ones face, yep.. your SOL. If anything it makes you THINK about what your hands are doing.

I have the same issue and during slow work and really any turn I am doing (such as a windy trail) I will put my hand down on my horses neck. I am still working on this but have improved my hand position greatly just doing that.

Also if you can have someone remind you while you are riding that helps too.

I don't snatch, but I can get overly busy with my hands, and my horse really just works best if I put my hand on his neck and let him work. So when I come to the gate I repeat to myself (outloud), rate and put your hand down, and I repeat it all the way to my rate point. It's helped me immensely.

The kids that rode with me that snatched, I would ask them to put one finger in one corner of the mouth and one in another corner and pull a tight smile. After a few times they broke the habit. Try it and see how your horse feels. It’s unforgettable.

You need to convince yourself your horse IS going to turn and you just need to GUIDE him/her. Don't pull back hardly at all, just squeeze your hand to add a little pressure on your rein. Maybe let your reins out a little bit longer too. Once you feel how much smoother it is if you don't snatch them, you will appreciate the smoothness and have a faster turn.

All joking aside, it's about TRUST. You need to trust him that's he's going to do his job. I have the same issue with a new horse.

No kidding!! I feel the same way! That is so unprofessional and inappropriate! I would have been humiliated. She should not be "teaching" if she has to resort to brute force to get her point across, but that's a whole nother thread.

Are you snatching your horse to try to move him/her into the pocket for the turn? I see that a lot, and often times I feel like it stems from leaving the backside of the previous barrel too rounded and trying to over-compensate to get the horse into position for the next turn. Girls will "hang" on the inside rein leaving the first making their horse float out and then when they switch hands, they snatch and try to move them over.

My advice is to leave your previous barrel looking straight at your point that you want to enter your next turn and drive your horse straight there. If you don't feel the need to move them at the last minute, you may be less prone to do it.

No it's not quite that. We used to have a bad problem of not turning (because I wasn't giving him enough pocket) then I found out he was in pain. So we fixed that at the beguof this year and now it's just risidual fear of him not turning, but he's been amazing the last few months and I know he'll turn, I'm just having a hard time trusting him to do it. He's the type of horse that you rate, but you still have to push him to get his butt past the barrel then you turn, and that style scares the crap out of me lol!

That makes sense. Then at your desired rate point, I would make a big sit move and focus on pushing both hands forward outside hand up against the horn to lock you in position in the saddle and inside hand to his neck or slightly to the inside to just guide him and let him turn.
