I am thinking about going this coming year and it will be my first time going. What should a first timer know? Are the stalls concrete? How’s the parking? How’s the arena?

Good questions- I have been told before that the stalls are concrete and there is a chance of tornadoes. But a must do bucket list item and I plan on going

Stalls are on Concrete

Plenty of Parking, but you will need your walking shoes whether you park where the hook ups are or just in the parking lot.

Arenas are good,  pretty much the same size and go.  I think Barn 6 alley is a little steeper than the Main barn.

Plenty of warm up arenas, there are round pens for turn out, but there is usally a line and a time limit.

Tornados are always a possibility in OK, even in December, also snow is always a possibility.  Pack for every season it might be 20 on Wednesay and 70 on Thursday.

I went last year for the first time.
The stalls are on concrete, so stall pads are great to have.
Last year I followed a friend who had been multiple times. We arrived less than an hour after the gates opened, so we were able to park fairly close to the main barn/arena. It was still a hike. Take your walking shoes no matter what.
It is a very well run show. The dirt was good and consistent, and I competed in the gold card race as well. Allow yourself plenty of time to get your horse numbered. It won't take near as long if you're a gold card member.
If you're alone and have no help, I'd recommend just entering one horse so you can really enjoy yourself. There's so much to do and see!

I didn’t know you have to get your horses numbered.. good to know. How late do they usually run into the night? And you run on certain days correct?

You have to get your horse numbered the day BEFORE you make your first run. I didn't see this rule until we were leaving for the BBR finals. We made a very fast trip and just made it in time to get numbered. I called to ask about this rule and was told if we didn't make it in time we could upgrade our membership and be allowed to number our horses on the day we made our first run. I'm glad we had decided to at least get to the barrel race the day before we were going to run.

Am I right in thinking the BBR finals will not be in OKC in 2019, but at the Lazy E in Guthrie, Oklahoma?

First I've heard of it. Next year's BFA moved so who knows.

BBR will be at OKC. I was told they are NOT moving to Lazy E. Boy that would be a night mare if they did! We have been lots of times to the finals. lots of walking or bring a golf cart - they may have some there to rent, not sure. Lots of vendors. They have the new RV lot completed and it is really nice plus it has free wifi. As for stalls, yes the are on concrete, you can rent stall pads, bring your own or lots of shavings. You do have to have your horse numbered I think they number daily so no worries there, but normally you just go to horse check in with your coggins and health papers (if not from OK) and they are pretty organized you just go there and get numbered.
Office staff have always been great if you have any questions. Also, plan on several seasons within the week! It could be cold one day and hot the next - or storming... normal Ok weather! lol

You have to be number the day before your first run unless you are a Gold Card member then I believe it is 2 hours before your first run. 15 minute time limit to unload but I've never had much trouble with them giving me trouble. I usually have 2-3 horses by myself so it takes a couple days (sarcasm kinda) to get situated when unloading. Usually pretty easy to get what you need done.

Do you know where they will move when Jim Norick gets renovated/torn down? I have heard it's a definite thing but I haven't been able to find a timeline. I figured it would be the Lazy E since its in the same general area and that seems to be the arena everyone else shifted to.

One year they remodeled barn 6 (is that the other arena?) and they had round 2 in barn 8 (right behind it). There are three arenas and four warm up pens. One warm up pen is big enough to have a barrel race or rope in.

I think the fair grounds will find a way to provide a third arena while the coliesum is demolished and replaced.  There is really not another facility with three pens, and enough stalls and rv parking to accomodate the BBR finals.
