A Cool Sharp One

Has anyone else had a horse wait until they are 5-6 to have a reaction to immunizations?

Last year my filly received her 6 in 1 and she became stiff and a lump on her neck; this past Thursday she had her coggins pulled and her 6 in 1 shot and she is stiff, has a lump on her neck again -  wondering what in there she could all of a sudden become allergic to?

My vet won’t use a 6-1. She gives 3 different shots, different locations. My 5 year old always has a reaction to tetanus. Lump and sore. She just gives him a dose of banamine along with shots. His lump from tetanus last year lasted a good 2 weeks. I’m rethinking for this spring.

And why do horses need tetanus every year but humans it’s 10???? Lol

I'm not exactly sure what combo my vet uses, if it's a 4 way or 5 way.  I don't think it's the 6 way.   (Been since Feb last year, I'd have to look.)  We also give potomac and rabies.
Mine ALWAYS have some sort of reaction, usually a sore neck.   We have started splitting them up by a week or so and give shots on both sides of the neck.    It helps keep the soreness to a medium (not miniumum!).

I've seen quite a few anti-vax people and their stories about never giving anything.  1/2 of me wants to beleive that a horse's immune system can take care of itself like ours does, and then the other 1/2 wants to be Safe rather than Sorry.  Especially with things like Potomac, EHV, Rabies, and most definitely Tetanus.   All are terrible, terrible things.

Because horses tend to get themselves into trouble in a padded room.  And if you'd seen tetanus in a horse, you'd never think twice about giving the vaccine.

Well vet said next year she will get bute before the shot and afterwards and not give to her in the neck - don't want to go the non-vaccine route because here in Fl we do have lots of bugs and have known a couple of horses die from west nile here.  I have a 3yr old colt and going to just give him the 3 way

today has been a week since her shot and she is still acting like she doesn't feel well, wonder if the banamine could have given her an upset stomach?

I would contact your vet to have her looked at. If its been a week already, I'd be afraid of something else being wrong. I can understand her being sore, but not acting like she is sick.

3 major manufacturers of equine vaccines: Zoetis, Merck, Boehringer Ingelheim. They all have different adjuvants. Some horses have reactions because of the adjuvants. If you get reactions, ask your vet about changing brands on that particular horse.

I would probably change brands, and maybe give banamine at the same time next time.
