My buckskin gelding is lacking in the muscle and topline and it is really starting to concern me as he has never looked like this before. I keep filling him with food and hay and alfalfa and it seems like it is just going straight through him. Any sugguestions on what I can give to fill him out and get the muscle back? Thanks.

I'd take a hard look at your feed.  Purina Sr. Active has my 25 yo gelding looking great.
I added THE Muscle Mass to his program and it took care of the rest.

What age is the horse?  Has he been wormed lately?

Lots of questions need asked. What are you feeding, how old, does he get ridden, been checked for ulcers, wormed, breed, have you switched feeds/hay/location/etc???

I am feeding Nutrena Perform at the moment along with Equinety. He is 14 years old. Yes ridden every other day or put on the walker if not ridden. Wormed last week. He is a Frenchman's guy/Sunfrost gelding. Have not scoped him for ulcers. Located in south louisiana. He also has free pasture grazing.

Ā I agree, if you have Bluebonnet feed, they have several good ones. THE Muscle mass is great plus you can add special blends...senior, hoof, ulcer, joint etc. I have 10% off and free shipping going on.

I used nutrena for 8 months and all my horses lost muscle and topline and I was feeding OVER the reccomended amount to try and keep weight on them! Switched back to Purina strategy and within a week their coats started to shine and in 3 weeks they started to fill back out and bloom again!
I also give an amino acid supplement and alfalfa to one I’m fitting.
Other things that come to mind are teeth, ulcers , epm.

I had a vet recommend giving something for sand, that if they aren't building topline or are loosing, to do a cleanse. I personally have seen good results with adding tri-amino to help the topline. I also put my OTTB mare on Renew Gold at a 1/2lb a day and she packed on a booty. She now has a valley down the center at the top of her hindquarters, and she's never had that before, and she's not even in consistent work right now. I would also second the checking for ulcers or just getting him on a good gut product period.

I have fed my own mix out of my local feed mill.
One winter I thought I would try a different approach to feeding them and tried ADM feeds.
My horses lost over a 100 lbs in a matter of months.
This was in the winter time in Iowa and they were not getting enough nutrition for our weather conditions.
Switched them back to my mix and the weight and condition came back.
I think most designer bagged feed is set up nutritionally for more ideal weather and energy requirements.

Id keep him on the alfalfa and add Purina Super Sport to his feed. If that doesn't help Id have him checked by a vet for EPM, worms, his teeth?
