I bought Xena
(rocket mare
) sight unseen within 2 hours of when her ad hit BHW. She was a tad too straight in her fronts
(almost back at the knee
) but nothing serious. I've never had cause to wish I'd not bought her.
I bought my DTF mare last year at 10X + the price of Xena, sight unseen. BUT, my trainer had seen the horse within a month of when I bought her and her results were trackable. I saved 25% on her purchase price with the fast purchase. Other than not taking to barefoot life she has been a dream come true. Her previous owner even messaged me yesterday to get a quick update - I know she would buy her back in a heartbeat if I wanted to sell!
I have gotten lucky. Or, to me, I trust my instinct.

I bought my DTF broodmare based of Ed wright's recommendations and a 13 second video from him. I did have a pre-purchase reproductive exam done to make sure nothing crazy popped up. My other broodmare was bought from a picture and an old video, but once again it was through someone I trusted to tell the truth. Otherwise, I'd only do it with money I could afford to throw away, I don't trust 98% of the horse selling population to see things the way I do. Everybody's opinion is subjective and a lot of people just flat out fib.
Edited to add - I'd NEVER -EVER- buy a riding horse without trying it. I don't adapt well to other peoples training. I have to know what I like, or think I could tweak - no surprises.
