Today is
I have two coming 3 year olds that I am hoping to futurity but It will be a first for me and i have read some of the rules but still kinda confused! Anyone that can give me helpful tips would be appreciated! Expected cost? And the best futurities to enter?
-Save up money for entries fees, depending on the size of the futurity, fees can be between $250-$2,500. Slot races can be $5,000!
-Put payment due dates on a calendar and/or set reminders to avoid late fees.
-Find a great mentor to follow around who has been in the game awhile. It helped me so much!
-Expect to have bad runs, they are still babies we are running.
-I live up north so thankfully we have the Northern Barrel Futurity Tour to run so that makes us amateurs more competitive locally verse the southern/western futurities where all the big wigs enter up.
-Good luck and have fun!
everything above poster mentioned plus...I don’t know where you are located but Ft Smith is always a great futurity, Southern Rebel in Augusta, SC. Kinder Cup in La, BFA, Better barrel races, No bull/ wbrl. Big ones in Az in Jan/Feb. there’s a few good ones in In too....(just places I can think of).
definitely plan a lot for entry fees. Your colts should be clocking in the 1d pretty consistently locally to be able to be competitive in the futurities. Plan for ups and downs, big thing is listen to that horse if he’s saying it’s too much then give him more time. Know the horse and how they handle travel/stress I had one that flat would not fire if she didn’t have a day to rest before competing. I really like the futurity world everybody was really nice. I haven’t done it much due to lack of funds and talented horses but certainly hope to do it again one day. Hope this helps
3 year olds.....haul haul haul exhibitions....to different pens inside and outdoor. If you don't babies will freak.
