Because I have my horses on a processed feed free feeding. They don't eat hay, they are on pasture and they get Omega cubes. Rather than reach for a feed that contains soy, I am feeding basic feed ingredients, proper supplementation, and hemp seeds. Hemp seeds are high in the quality protein and fatty acids your horse needs to maintain and repair healthy tissues. Offering whole foods on a regular basis, such as hemp seeds, gives you another tool in maintaining your horse's overall health. Chia seeds is an excellent source of the essential fatty acid -- Omega-3. Each 50 gram serving will provide approximately 10,000 mg of beneficial Omega -3! AlsoChia is low in non-structural carbohydrates, while providing protein/amino acids and natural fiber to the diet. Each 50 gram serving of Chia seeds will provide approximately 20 grams of fiber. Also Hemp seeds from what I have researched are good for maintaining healthy feet.
My horses are senior horses - one age 25 the other is 31. Both have lameness issues because of just general aging as they were barrel horses and rope horses and hauled a lot. So they have had a lot of wear and tear. Just wanting to provide them with what is best.
I was just wanting to know if anyone was feeding any of the Hemp or Chia seeds.
If you go to BioStar Equine supplement page they have a blog and one of them talks about when and why to feed Hemp oil or Camelina oil. It's really a good read. All their supplements are whole food supplements.
