Who do you use? And what do you pay?

personally I think they are all about the same as far as cost and coverage. The difference is when your agent goes up to bat for you and helps handle your claim. All about the agent.

I went with Broadstone Equine Insurance after someone on BHW recommended them (wish I could remember who and thank them).

They are an agency that represents a number of companies. I went with Hartford.  I was able to get MM with a low mortality value, and it was very affordable.  I just had a claim and they paid it within a week.  Plus, all their forms are on their website so you can fill them out, scan and email them in.

I use Plains Horizion.  Premiums are 3.2-3.3% depending on use.

I am an insurance agent, and yes...they are all relatively the same. I'm happy to get you a quote.

As has previously been stated, they're all relatively the same cost for barrel horses. Some allow you to spreadout the annual premium in to monthly payments.

One thing to keep in mind.... some don't require you to prove value up front. They go off purchase price, or breeding fees, and some other metrics (including what you want the horse insured for).  But, if you do have a mortality claim you need paid out, the value of the horse will have to be justified. They'll ask for winnings, training costs, etc etc...... And I've known two people who couldn't prove the higher value of those horses, when asked. So, when the horses colicked and didn't make it, they didn't get paid out the full amount of what the horses were insured for. Even though they'd paid the higher premiums for that higher dollar value amount.

One company who does require value proven up front is Great American. So if you have a mortality claim, it's paid with the amount the horse was insured for. That's who I've used for years now. Thankfully I haven't had a mortaility claim with them but, I've had medical claims on multiple horses over the years and never had an issue. I know others who've said they have had some claim issues with them but, I have no idea of the circumstances because mine has always been straight forward and I get paid fast.
