I've been breakaway roping for the last few years. I'm getting back into barrels and i have noticed alot of girls only put boots on the front of their horses not on the back? Can someone give me a reasoning for this?

I always used hinds on my old horse. After I warmed up at a race I realized I didn't get there with both my hind boots, the next run I used them and he seemed uncomfortable so I stopped using them.

My young horse can be a little funny about things, like a tail bag makes him crow hop, so I just haven't bothered to put any on him. He seems fine without them.

I have one horse that hated them and they caused more problems than they prevented.

Started wrapping the back legs instead. Couldn't find boots that fit my horses hind legs the way I wanted.

It depends on the horse.  I don't think it is as important as the front.  How much protection do you want to give.

I struggled to find back boots that FIT and would actually STAY in place. So I started going without.

I will say, I started using them again on my new mare when I tried the new Prof Choice 2xCool boots. I like that they fit well and stay up.

But let's be honest, I only use sport boots for physical protection. The actual percentage they actually help for so called "shock absoroption" that all the companies claim is peanuts. But I'd rather replace a boot, than wait for horseflesh to heal. Horses would be much more prone to step or catch their front feet, with a back leg.

And pretty rare for a back leg to HIT another back leg high enough where a boot is. If they are going to step on themselves, it'll probably be lower anywhere where the boot doesn't cover.

So that's another reason why I have kind dropped the hind boots the last few years.

When I was younger I would use hind boots on a horse who really got down in the hind end to prevent "burn" from the friction. Is this not a thing? Lmao
