Sparklin Cowgirl Posts: 4376	I got a new horse 2 weeks ago and isn't very interested in hay. (background - QH - 4-year-old - off the track for 2.5 months. Was turned out before I got her. Was on alfalfa at their place) She was not a fan of my grain at first so once I found one she liked, she is eating grain fine, she just isn't much of a hay eater. I have tried grass, alfalfa/grass, straight alfalfa and she's just like meeehh about it all. She will pick at it but doesn't eat much of it. She doesn't eat alfalfa pellets very well either. I have her on Zestra, GastroGuard, Outlast, and a probiotic. I have never had one that didn't eat like a starving hippo! Does anyone have some tips on getting her to eat her hay better? Extreme Veteran Posts: 599	I would swap from all of those supplements to just CEP Gut Check. I have a harder keeper who would pick at her feed and walk away, and not touch her alfalfa for longer than a minute of two. One dose of Gut Check is 10cc. I started giving her 20cc in her mouth twice a day when we started on it. After a couple of weeks I switched to 10cc twice a day in her feed. Since adding it, she has been finishing all her meals and eating a lot more alfalfa.

Having Smokin Bandits Posts: 4572 Location: Woodstown, NJ	I know you said she's eating the grain fine now that you found one that she likes. Does she like it because it's soft compared to the other grain you were giving her that she didn't like? You also said that you had her teeth done. Could there be something going on in her mouth or throat that doesn't have anything to do with the teeth? Have you tried giving her treats to see how she eats them? Is she losing any weight? I had a mare who was a picky eater. It always had me worried. When she came to me, she was thin and then I learned why. She DID eat though.
