So after attempting to get Ponazuril today, which is what Marquis is or Diclazuril (Protazil)....I was informed by every equine pharmacy I called (over 10 of them) that its illegal for them to sell or compound generic forms of drugs when the brand name is available on the market. I tried NexGen, R&R, Heartland, etc. they all said nope, but conveniently Marquis wasn't on backorder anymore as of today for them all. I finally found one whos supply is still showing on manufacturers backorder so they would since they can't get Marquis. And it was 10% of the cost of Marquis for a 30 day supply. Maybe I just was oblivious and didn't know about this "law.' I've never needed anything Rx besides the omeprazole/sucralfate paste my vet had & they kept it in stock from a pharmacy. But that seems absolutely insane to me. And people think human drug companies are screwing us, at least I can get generic meds for me. Rood & Riddle was the first one I tried and I thought maybe they were just giving me the run around, but I kept calling and everywhere said no. Places that didn't even sell Marquis at all to start with wouldn't do it, but they alllll had the generics on their websites showing available. I tried to purchase online thinking maybe I could get around it but it wouldn't let me either. Just seems insane to me that they force us to spend $1300 for Marquis when you can get the powder form for 10% of that. My mare tested positive for both strains but has no symptoms so I wasn't going to buy a $1300 treatment

Pharmacy companies & insurance companies (especially health insurance) are just legalized racketeering.

NexGen talked to you? When I called, they said they only talked to vets. Marquis is old enough to allow generics. Something doesn't sound right.

Most people are not aware. Compounding a drug or drug combo that is currently marketed as a name brand or generic is illegal, even if you have a Rx for it. The only time a product like this is to be compunded is when there is no other available source.

the law was put in place to keep compounders from selling name brand products for much lower prices and manufacturing them without any safety standards. The law doesn't get enforced a lot but periodically compunders get their hand slapped.

My vet called NexGen, we were tag teaming the list of pharmacies trying to call. Because she knew for me Marquis or Protazil were not an option financially. And it apparently doesn't matter how long something has been on the market, if its there they can't do generic. Makes me wonder how many people have had to put their horses down bc they couldn't afford the $1300 to save them, when they might have been fine & lived a happy life with a $138 generic. I would have been in that boat, thank god mine isn't showing physical signs of having it yet & I stumbled upon the right time to get lucky

You might try using another vet. There's plenty of opportunity to buy the  products you need thru various vet clinics .

It is legal for compounding pharmacies to make a product that is commercially available in a different dosage that is not available, different strengths, or presentations (think paste if liquid is the commercially available version). A lot of clinics have online pharmacies that fulfill compounded prescriptions. Check BRD, Wedgewood, Chewy, Vets First Choice.

All of the pharmacies, besides the one I found, would not do any dose of any form of the ponazuril or diclazuril. They said generic in any form was illegal, because I had thought that I could get a different form. I called her surgeon, who did the epm test, and he said he wouldn't be able to get anything either for the same reason. Idk what the pharmacies the vet called, I had just gone down the google list after Rood & Riddle denied us. I ended up with 2.5g Ponazuril powder bc thats all I could find & all the pharmacy offered, I figured that was better than nothing because nothing was starting to look like my only option.

I have no idea if this is even possible, but could you try and get it from another country? Maybe Canada?

Marquis is ponazuril, every place we called had it...just couldn't sell it apparently. Except the one place, so I do have it now and have started the treatment with it. I could've gotten the diclazuril mix, but thats not what my vet wanted me to get. My horse has both strains of EPM, said the ponazuril should work better in her case

I believe I will be doing that one on a second round if the ponazuril doesn't do the trick. Problem is each drug works better for a different strain, and since she has both we may need to use both. We will see. At least that one is simpler to get
