I didn't realize it but i took my nice colt to be ridden by a friend and she discovered he had ear ticks. He is the only horse i have. Now, when he gets home i don't know what to do to prevent him from getting them again. He was getting sprayed with pyrahna fly spray everyday to help for flies. which i realize will not prevent ticks. he never rubbed his ears or showed a sign of ear problems. i feel really bad about it. can everyone give suggestions or tell what they use daily to prevent ticks on their horses? Rubs, supplements, sprays, drops??? Do you also spray your barn area for ticks? If so, what with? Thank you!!
Someone a while ago suggested the dog spot treatment for fleas and ticks in the ear for a mule with ear ticks...
Ear ticks look like little spiders. It isn't the same as a tick in their ear. Really a big difference. Both will make them very head shy and you might have a problem getting the bridle on. EAR TICKS are bad and can cause a horse to permanently lose it equilibrium. They used to make a liquid that you poured down into the horse's ears. It was rather challenging to apply to say the least. They don't sell that anymore because it had hazardous substances in it. The name of it was EAR TIX TOX. I had a horse that was put out in a pasture wit tall grass and that is how he got them. That was back in the 1979's and it seemed a lot of horses got them but I have not heard of any horses having them since. I keep my pastures pretty short so I haven't had that problem since. I would as you vet for today's best medicine for that. A product that I really like to KEEP bugs out of the horses ears is a roll on fly repellent by FARNAM. Works very well for keeping flies out so would probably work for keeping ticks out too. I like it. Cheap. Will find you a link.

Huh?
A couple drops of Frontline will take care of ticks and mites. Easy to use than powders or gooey oil base products .
It also helps to let the ears stay hairy.
