| Since I get tired of posting the abcess cure, I thought a thread for home remedies that work was in order. I'll start:
Sidekicks Mom - 2009-04-16 5:59 PM This recipe needs to be a sticky because I get tired of posting it!
1 cup Ice Tight (or some other packing mud). 1/3 cup Iccathamol 1 TBS Epsom Salts 1 tsp Alum (pickling spice)
Mix in well ventilated area. Slap on bottem of foot. Put newborn baby diaper on and duct tape the crp out of it.
Change every 24 hours. The longest I have seen it take to work is 48 hours.

| Detangler (close enough to the actual mix, lol):
1 pint Alcohol 3/4 cup baby oil 3 oz Alpha Keri (blue bath oil)
Mix all igrediants in spray bottle. Shake as you use. Start at the bottem and work your way up.
This takes out mats in the mane and tail better than any OTC product out there.
After you use it, you can then wash and condition since it does have alcohol in it.

Some people freak out about the alcohol being in it and drying the hair.
I've never had a problem becuase I think all the oil counteracts the alcohol. |

Location: IM A DUDE!!!!!!! | for a body liniment i use rubbing alcohol
it also helps bring out the dirt and makes them shiney
i use regular vinegar and a lil bit of water for fly spray
right now we have those HUGE sticker burrs and my horses that are turned loose have them all over their manes and tails
they look like they have hair rollers
so i use WD40
just spray it on and they will fall off themselves

You can save this thread in your "Favorites" on your internet browser... then all you gotta do is click on the thread, and poof... there it is. So far, after at least a couple of years of saving stuff... none of it has ever come up with an error page... and even if something gets added to the thread after you save it in your fav's... it will still be on the page that pulls up!
That's the entire list of useful internet information that I have... but it does work~ |

want your palomino to shine?.... baby shampoo and yellow original listerine. mix 2 parts shampoo 1 part listerine and wash your palomino, the gold will sparkle and the white will blind.
upset/sour horse tummy? think maybe you have ulcers? try a little bit of baking soda. (not for long term use and consult a vet if you think its ulcers)
need a liniment? rubbing alcohol
want to clean some silver on your tack? (if its not too tarnished) use a pencil eraser.
cleaning your leather tack? murphys oil soap - warm water - and scrub it (use an old toothbrush for tooling). dry - then apply neatsfoot oil to make it shine (will darken light leather)
your horse blanket filthy but hot water not cutting it? use baking soda
oops ran out of electrolytes - use some table salt to hold you over
fly spray- mix in spray bottle - 1 part acv - 1 part skin so soft - 1 part water and shake
detangler - i like the creamy baby oil from the dollar tree - or mix skin so soft and water.

Location: your guess is as good as mine | We use Listerine in our feed room in the summertime to keep out mosquitoes, flies, & moths...just pour it in a big spray bottle & spritz the feed room when we first go in at night. Smells better than commercial fly sprays & the best part is it doesn't matter if it gets on hay or feed.
We also keep a bottle outside the doors we use at the house to keep bugs from getting in when we open the door. |

Also, gave it to a filly in her feed, she ran a post in her-from the under side of girth area to all but coming out the front of her neck-it missed all arteries, put 1/4 to 1/2 cup of 'unrefined honey' in her feed-with in 30 days it was healed and hardly any scaring on the outside-the vet was blown away! Unrefined honey is honey that has not been processed it's not the honey you buy for on your biscuits..
Cider vinegar-can be used with heat & ice. For leg brace-old time racehorse people used this: cut a paper bag in strips or a leg wrap & soak it in 'Cider Vinegar' place it on the leg-cover with saran wrap, leg wrap, polo wrap. Will pull out all soreness. This is also good on human burns & bruises-it pulls out soreness & if done soon enough after a burn the burn will not blister and there will be no scarring.

| I recently had a veterinarian tell me to use sauerkraut on abcesses. He said to pack the hoof with it, then wrap with a diaper/duct tape or vet wrap. Have any of you ever heard of, or used it for abcesses? |

| TThis is a great liniment that jzthoward gave me the recipe for .... From : jzthoward | | Here is my recipe for homeade linament. Best to sponge it on because in a sprayer the salt clogs it up. It is safe to wrap with and is GREAT for swelling or stocking up. In a gallon jug put about 2 inches of epsom salt in the bottom, then add: 1 bottle white alcohol 1 bottle green alcohol 1 bottle witch hazel 1 bottle white vinegar 1 bottle absorbine 1-2 tsp alum(find in the spice section of grocery store/walmart) Fill the rest of jug with water and shake well before each use. If you don't shake it well you will see some salt residue on your horse but it won't hurt anything. This linament is pretty much all I use except for bigeoil and bigeoil gel. | |

Location: Way down yonder in the indian nation~Oklahoma | I really like the Melaleuca Tea Tree products, and try to use them instead of chemicals as much as possible... here are a few of the recipe's that I like~
Dry Cracked Hooves Mix one ounce of Sol-U-Mel blended into 32 ounces of water in a spray bottle. This is a very effective spray for dry hooves. Spray the hoof walls and soles area twice a day until symptoms improve, then spray as needed to maintain.
Fly Control for Stall Area/Trailers This is a strong solution for the worst part of fly season. 2 Tablespoons Tough and Tender 2 capfuls of Renew Bath Oil 1/2 capful of Sol-U-Mel 5-10 drops of T36-C5 Tea Tree Oil 32 ounces of water Combine in a spray bottle. Spray barn area, hallways, feed rooms, or the interior hauling compartment in your horse trailer. Spray everyday for one week to establish a base of the oil on surfaces... spray once or twice per week to maintain effectiveness. This works on face flies, horse flies, and black house flies. (I keep a bottle by my backdoor to spray before I go inside... ) The more you use this the more effective it is at keeping the area free of flies.
You can also mix 1/4 cup of Tough and Tender with 1/4 cup of Sol u Mel and 1/4 cup of Renew bath oil in a gallon of water. This spray is more effective the more you use it because the oil accumulates over time so you need to have some patience in the spring. You have to start off spraying more often. This mix can also be used to repel bugs off of you. Don't use this spray near the eyes.
Fly/Mosquito/Tick/Gnat Repellant Mix 1/3 of a bottle of T36-C5 with 32 ounces of water in a spray bottle. It is very effective insect repellant and costs approximately $2 per bottle as opposed to $10 for most chemical fly solutions.
Horses have been known to have allergic reactions to mosquito saliva. You can load a horse with the diet supplement ProVex until the symptoms improve, then administer a maintenance dose to manage the condition.
Girth Itch and Rain Rot Fill a 16 ounce bottle with water and 2 teaspoons of Nature's Cleanse. Spray this on areas that are affected by girth itch, rain rot, or other fungicidal or pesticidal skin irritations. No rinsing is necessary. Two applications will usually completely clear up even serious problems.
Thrush Two teaspoons of Nature's Cleanse combined with 16 ounces of water is a very effective treatment for minor thrush. In more severe cases, increase the Nature's Cleanse to 3 teaspoons with the 16 ounces of water. Spray on the hoof sole and wall twice per day. Soaking for 30 minutes for more severe cases. In 48 hours there should be no sign of thrush. To prevent the return of thrush or for dry hoofwalls and heels, spray with this mixture when the hoof is trimmed or cleaned. This will instantly deoderize the smell of thrush.

Location: Kansas | I am borrowing this from our local riding organization. "NEKSAG"..these are posted on their homepage. I have tried a few of these recipes...especially the first one.. (works great). Other nifty ideas below.
*To remove manure stains* 1 bottle of rubbing alcohol 1 bottle of water 1/8 cup of GREEN Palmolive Dish Soap (HAS to be the GREEN one!!!!) Mix in a spray container -Spray on the manure stain spot then wipe with a damp well wrung out sponge. Rinse sponge clean and wipe again. The stain should come right out. If it is REALLY bad you might need to apply the remover once more. I made up this recipe after guessing what was in an expensive store product and we used this on two pure white geldings for years before their shows - it worked like magic! You must rinse your sponges nice and clean as you go though, a dirty sponge on a white spot will leave a yellow tinge!!
*Homemade Show Sheen Recipe* 1/4 (one quarter) cup hair conditioner 1/4 (one quarter) cup baby oil 2 tablespoons vinegar (to keep flies away, this is optional) 1/4 (one quarter) cup water Mix and use as you would any other store-bought spray.
*Homemade Fly Spray for Horses #1* Mix equal parts of the following: Cider Vinegar Dawn Blue dish soap * Water Mix ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well and use as you would any fly spray. *Homemade Fly Spray for Horses #2* Mix the following: 1 cup white distilled vinegar 1 cup Water 1/3 cup Dawn dish soap (blue, not ultra) * Mix ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well and use as you would any fly spray. ***NOTE: Dawn Dishwashing does contain formaldehyde. If you wish to substitute a non-formaldehyde dish soap, this would work just as well. Lemon Brite is one. *Homemade Fly Spray for Horses #3* 2 cups white vinegar 1 cup Avon Skin So Soft (Bath oil) 1 cup water 1 tablespoon eucalyptus oil Mix ingredients in a spray bottle. Shake well and use as you would any fly spray. Homemade Mane & Tail Detangler* Calgon Bath Oil Beads (dry); Water Mix the Calgon with water - one part Calgon to three parts water. Store in a spray bottle. It will help recondition your horse's mane and tail. It also works well on knots. Apply liberally and work the knot out with a comb or stiff brush. Homemade Saddle Soap* 2 bars of glycerin soap (available at Bath & Body Works) ¼ cup milk 1/3 cup Lexol Leather Conditioner Place all ingredients in microwaveable plastic container. Microwave until goopy and stir well. Smooth out the top and place in the freezer for several hours until hardened. unscented/scented and dyed glycerin soap works fine. *Sweet Feed Apples* 3 apples 1 cup sweet feed 1/2 cup Molasses Core and Slice apples into approximately 1/2 inch slices. Set aside on wax paper. In a bowl mix sweet feed and molasses thoroughly. Spoon sweet feed mixture into the center of each apple slice. Refrigerate until firm. *Horse Cookies* 1 cup Margarine 1 cup brown sugar 2 eggs 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup bran 1 tsp. Baking soda 1 cups quick-cooking oats 1 cup diced carrots 1 cup diced apples Cream margarine and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs. Combine flour, bran and baking soda, and blend into creamed mixture. Stir in oats, carrots and apples. Drop by spoonfuls onto un-greased baking sheets and bake in a moderate oven (350 F - 190 C) for 10 - 12 minutes, until lightly browned. This makes about 4-dozen cookies. *Wound Care* A past buyer of these instructions gave me this recipe for treating superficial wounds and less severe cuts. I have not personally tried it, but she has! Mix equal parts: Skin So Soft by Avon (to keep away bugs) Listerine Mouth Wash (to kill germs) Then just spray onto the affected area. She says it works like a charm helps heal things much faster. *A few other tips*: Use Dawn dishwashing detergent the original blue formula, not ultra, to bathe your horse. It works great, makes him shine, and is really cheap! Faster Bathing Idea: When I give my horses baths, I mix my shampoo w/ a little water in a big spray bottle. Then, after I wet them down, I take my spray bottle in one hand, and my soft rubber curry in the other (the pink soft Grooma works great). I can spray on the soap and scrub them all over in record time without all the bending and soapy water running up my arms. Note: Do NOT spray the soap directly on their faces. When giving your horse a soap bath, rinsing with white vinegar will help to remove the soap. Vinegar will also serve as a fly repellent. Put half a cup of fabric softener and pine cleaner in a small bucket of hot water. Wring out a rub rag in this mixture and use it to remove dust, dirt and germs from the coat. This solution will also soften the coat and leave a great shine. Be very careful so not to get in eyes, ears, etc. You may want to test this on a small spot in case of irritation, but I have never had any problems with this. Equal parts vinegar and water will take out ma nure stains. It is VERY important for white & gray horses. A little baby oil in warm water is a good cleaner for the under tail area of a mare. It cleans them and softens the area. It is REALLY good for dirty mares. Use a five-gallon bucket for saddle racks. Take the handle off and nail them to the wall with a few nails on the inside of the bucket so the opening faces out. They keep the saddle in the correct position and the "cubby" inside makes a wonderful place to stash your grooming gear! *To Cover Scars and Bite Marks* Cover scars and bite marks with an oil pastel stick or artist chalk. |

Helps tangles like you would not believe, the shine is beautiful, leaves the hair soft and believe it or not it has helped with thickness and length since I have been using it. And depending on what you but the smell is fantastic and leaves no oily residue......I could just keep going. You gotta try it! Wow, just mixed up some and it smells incredible!!!
I used 1 part conditioner & 1 part water because my conditioner was kinda thick. Then added 1 part baby oil and 1 part yellow mouthwash. I labeled my bottle "Super Secret Stuff" and I hope noone runs off with it here at the ranch, LOL! |

I also mixed this up and added a little fabric softener for good measure .. I used it on my 3 yr old gelding who has a super thick mane and an ok tail. He always has so many tangles and his mane and tail look dull all of the time, and dry. Anyway I used this stuff and it worked great. It made his mane so smooth and soft. He is sorrel so I couldn't visibly see any dirt build up, but didn't feel any either. 2 days after I put this in his mane I brought him in to brush him and there were hardly any tangles and his mane and tail were still soft and smooth. LOVE this stuff and will use it from here on out. |

Location: Way down yonder in the indian nation~Oklahoma | The recipe I remember for furazone sweat:
30 cc DMSO 30 cc liquid Nitrofurazone (salve comes in a black jar, set in a warm place to liquify, but do not actually heat up or microwave, just sit in the sunshine or on the truck dash until it is soft enough to suck up into a syringe to measure) 1 Packet powdered Azium
Wash leg with castile soap to remove any residue left on the leg from liniments, medications, or fly spray. Apply sweat with a soft brush or gloved hand. Wrap in plastic wrap/cotton quilt/standing bandage. 12 hours on 12 hours off.
DO NOT APPLY ANY OTHER LINIMENT OR MEDICATION TO LEG WITHOUT WASHING THOROUGHLY WITH CASTILE SOAP!!!! |

I was told by the lady that I learnt this from that it just moisturizes and disinfects, she never rinses and she has never had a problem. I have not rinsed b4 and he was fine, but i usually do rinse (and as disturbing as it is he like it when I put water up there at anytime haha )
your baby oil should already have aloe in it, and just a splash of baby oil. pretty simple remedy! |

Location: Where I need to be | This started out as a home remedy for people with chronic sinus conditions. Oregano oil works great to keep you from getting a sinus infection. My mare recently came up lame on the right front. Head bobbing lame. Anyway I pulled out the nail and cleaned the sole of her foot. I then filled the nail hole with oil of oregano. Today she was good to go. All the soreness was gone. I still gave her a tetnus shot, but thought it was amazing that the lamness was gone. |

I would never wrap one without cotten sheeting between the skin and the Saran Wrap. The plastic wrap simply pinches and binds too easily and can cause a wrap bow if you aren't careful. |

Yes a little, I've used it for 5+ years and never had a severe problem, I do have one horse that switches his tail terribly when the flies are out and will break off his tail. I find that the fabric softener etc leaves a grimey build up and *gasp* I hardly EVER wash a tail or mane, it's just something I don't do very often. The silicone helps keep the junk from collecting in their hair. HOWEVER, becareful, I've had a few slippery rein incidents if you spray the mane about the same time as you bridle. Those of you that are mane/tail challenged like me try the silicone every now and then, it really does work to get a nice look in a hurry.

I always wrap a cotton sheet inbetween the skin and the saran, I just forgot to add it in my post. I use a cotton pillow wrap, one of the thin ones then the saran, then I wrap with my no bows. Once I take them off i like to cold hose for 15-20 mins as well after. |

Doo Gro it is for Ethnic hair but it works excellent on mane and tails. Just a little bit goes along way. It also helps prevent brakeage. And it does not make the horses hair oily but it with on cocasion hair if ya use more than a pea size. |

Location: Not sure yet | ghost rider - 2011-02-17 11:53 AM We use Listerine in our feed room in the summertime to keep out mosquitoes, flies, & moths...just pour it in a big spray bottle & spritz the feed room when we first go in at night. Smells better than commercial fly sprays & the best part is it doesn't matter if it gets on hay or feed.
We also keep a bottle outside the doors we use at the house to keep bugs from getting in when we open the door.
Does this work on your horses and does it last more than a day? |

| Here's one for bad cuts or proud flesh..
Osha Root (you can buy at any herb store or some drug stores)
1 Osha Root
3 Cups of water
Bring to a rolling boil for 30 minutes. Doesnt have the best smell.
Let cool add to a spray bottle and spray the area 3 times a day. Heals wounds fast and kills proud flesh Ive had very little scaring after using this.
You can use the boiled root to repel spiders buy living it in a window seal or throw under your home our out in the barn. |

I really like the Melaleuca Tea Tree products, and try to use them instead of chemicals as much as possible... here are a few of the recipe's that I like~
Dry Cracked Hooves Mix one ounce of Sol-U-Mel blended into 32 ounces of water in a spray bottle.
THANK YOU!!! |

| The best thing I have found for proud flesh is to scrub it until it bleeds with soap/water/betadine. Hose it clean then pack with Adolph's Meat Tenderizer. Wrap tightly with cotton quilts and standing wraps. Works great!!!! |

Location: Seward, Nebraska | just a little was I kind of experimenting as the orschlens doesnt carry quick braid or anything, i dident want to drive 30 minutes to a tack store and i only had a few hrs free to see if i could still do the diamond pattern in manes, so i went to the dollar store and got medium hold pump hair spray and added maybe a cap of baby oil you probly dont need to even add the baby oil but i figured it would keep it from flaking and add a little shine. i just used enough oil in the gel to make it easy to put on the roots and ends when i was done to keep a clean look. really wish i would have taken a picture. |

| I have a older mare who is very sentitive to flies....I feed her a supplement with garlic in it & this year I am using Spalding fly predator, which has helped the flies over all. She is on an acre of pasture and when in her pen I keep it clean. The problem is the few flies around go right to her front legs and make them bleed and swell up :( Does anyone have a home remedy like maybe a paste I can put on her legs to keep the bitten flies away!! |

I don't know if this will help on her front legs or not, but I KNOW that it helps with the midline... maybe it will help your mare too!!!
1- 20 ounce bottle Aloe Vera Gel (I use generic) 1 -12 ounce bottle of EXTRA THICK hand lotion (any cheap kind will work, thicker the better) OR 1 large tube of Corona salve (lotion is cheaper and works just as good) 4 ounces of Hydrocortizone CREAM 4 ounces of triple antibiotic CREAM 1 ounce of oil of citronella (ask for this at the pharmacy, if you cannot get it, you can use 2T of Skin so soft bath oil)
Mix this stuff all together and put back in one of the large bottles (if you get one with a pump on it, all the better) slather this on the effected areas twice a day... the flys tend to pick on skin that is extra dry, because dry skin is easier pickin's to them... if you keep this on the parts that are oozing, leaving a thick scum over it, it will help heal whats there, and prevent more bites from happening.
I have a horse that is also extremly allergic to fly bites and mosquito saliva. His midline was raw most of the time from so much torture from the bugs... I've been using this all summer and he is good to go... still not much hair regrowth, but he's not raw and oozing either. I sure hope this will help your mare!!!

Location: Missouri | Home Remedy for deep cuts that are difficult to apply stiches in:
I have seen and personally used this many times and have recommended it to many of my friends and seen it work on their horses as well.
1. 8oz Vaseline (or cheaper kind) - Keeps the wound free of dirt and moisture while it heals.
2. 8oz Honey
3. 8oz Adolf's Meat Tenderizer (eliminates proud flesh and keeps it from forming)
4. 8oz Cod Liver Oil (found in the baking/spices isle)
Stir all these together and use gloves. The cod liver oil will stick in your skin for a while if you are not careful. Clean wound good with cool water and apply using a soft bristle paint brush. Apply every day for five days. Do not wash once applied. After 5 days rinse out and start the process over. Do not wrap! The wound will start to heal from the inside out and leave no scar and no white hairs.
I had a red roan mare that got ran into a fence. She had sliced her leg from her hock down into her hoof all the way around. It was a flab of skin just hanging on. I wrapped that one piece for a small while to give it a chance to reconnect. Applied this everyday. Never once saw a vet and she healed with a single scar! Can't even tell the incident had occured.
It smells horrid, but it really does work and recommend it to anyone with a nasty cut.
I have also heard that WD-40 works wonders if sprayed on sore muscles. Haven't tried it yet! |

Location: Oklahoma | For THRUSH (in the hooves), use straight Tea Tree Oil. Be sure to get a PURE concentrated brand - not the cheap stuff.
Kills the thrush in a matter of days.
If the thrush is in a hard to access area (i.e. down in a crack or side of the frog), I fill a little 1 cc syringe (WITHOUT a needle attached) and squirt the Tea Tree Oil into the crack. The tip of the small syringe fits into hard to access places very nicely.

Purchase HiYield Captan Rose Fungus powder.
Mix it just like it says on the can--
Wet the horses skin-- and then brush in the mixture.

1 cup Ice Tight (or some other packing mud).
1/3 cup Iccathamol
1 TBS Epsom Salts
1 tsp Alum (pickling spice)
Mix in well ventilated area. Slap on bottem of foot. Put newborn baby diaper on and duct tape the crp out of it.
Change every 24 hours. The longest I have seen it take to work is 48 hours.

I *think* it is called Motions hair product, no comment on the name, but it is pretty phenomenal... I like it better than mane and tail because I don't notice the residue left behind. I did put some baby oil in it and shake it up. I put it in their manes and tails and love it because a week later when you go out to brush, it is not hard at all. I haven't had one tangle nor cockleburr in any of their manes or tails and we have a TON of them here...Keeps the static down to when brushing them...Also, it smells WONDERFULLLL! |

Location: Whitney, NE | Easy flyspray for horses OR people:
2 oz rose geranium essential oil, peppermint, lavender, or marigold essential oil, or a mixture as you like.
Mix into a spray bottle (12 oz or so) with vodka, everclear or some other HIGH alcohol content liquid. (Rubbing alcohol will work, but it is very drying to the skin.) The purpose of the alcohol is just to be a carrier for the Essential oil. Once sprayed on, the alcohol will evaporate, leaving the EE behind.
Spray onto person or horse as needed.

want your palomino to shine?.... baby shampoo and yellow original listerine. mix 2 parts shampoo 1 part listerine and wash your palomino, the gold will sparkle and the white will blind.
upset/sour horse tummy? think maybe you have ulcers? try a little bit of baking soda.

Location: In the woods | I have found that Tea Clenz works great. My horses tend to lose the hair on their heads in the summer. They get this flaky stuff in it's place. I treat a couple of times with the stuff, then every so often after... never a problem. Also works for rain rot, takes 3 days to resolve then the hair grows back after. I'm now trying it out on the underside of my saddle pad and girth. I'm doing a quick spray after each use...we'll see if they get that funky smell (it's really hot and humid here). |

Jim Rickens Formula... get it at a feed store, or race horse supply, the stuff is awesome. Don't get any of it on the hairline, or your hands. If you do, use common rubbing alcohol immediately to remove the solution and the color. If you don't, it will lightly burn your skin. It does work wonders on thin, or sore soles. If you can't find Rickens, use plain old turpentine, if you can find that. Takes a little longer but still works, and still don't get it on any hair. |

Goop or "gojo" the white type, basically the mechanic hand cleaner. Rub a couple globs into the mane and tail, let it sit for 10 minutes. Shampoo and condition it. Then rub coconut oil in it.
The tail will look whiter with each use. But make sure to use an oil afterwards, because it does strip the oils out of the horses tail. I love using coconut oil, and putting up in a tail bag. |

Location: Arkansas | Try Icthamol (Spelling?) Its a drawing salve and you will see a huge difference in just a few days... If your horse is extremely sore with soft soles, pack its feet generously and place large gauze pads on the bottom and secure with vet wrap. change every day for a few days and try to keep the horses feet dry, and possibly stall. If his soreness isnt severe, you can just put the salve on once or twice a day and turn out in regular pasture. Hope this helps! |

 Location: Indiana | Horse Treats:
1 apple
several baby carrots
mollases
horse feed, oats, etc.
Just cut up the apple into bit size pieces and cut the carrots in half. Then get a container with a lid and put the apples, the carrots, some mollases, and some feed/oats in there. Then mix it all up really good with a spoon (or with your hands if you want to be very sticky and horse feedy). Then you can feed it with your hand like a regular treat (again you'll be sticky), or you can always keep the spoon in the container and when you want to feed it spoon some up onto the underside of the lid and hold it out to the horse, or just spoon some into his/her feed bucket.

| From your local grocery store, drug store, feed store...
These are things I have done/used
For Cinch Rot and possibly rain rot you can use over the counter Athlete's Foot aerosol spray. Used to use Captan (for plants/roses/fungus) but much easier to run to a drug store for Athlete's Foot spray! Have never had one with rain rot tho!
I like Ickmathol for hoof abscesses (after epson salt soak) and use a diaper vet wrap and duct tape.
Cowboy Magic works just like the Freeze-Ease/Frizz Serum products but I find that Cowboy Magic a better price. I use the Cowboy Magic detangler on burrs in the manes/tails. If I feel cowboy Magic is too drying, I just spray baby oil/conditioner/showsheen into the tails/manes. They will get dirty, but helps dry brittle manes stay soft.
Baby oil and Dawn (soap) will take Tarweed off - use a wash cloth and smooth it on- let sit for a few minutes
OXY Clean (powder) will bring out your white tails... then condition well!
WD 40 for tree sap removal
Hard to brush tails... use Cowboy magic as a conditioner and wash out, then reapply and brush from bottom up.
For fun and maybe you already know these-- but please share your own ideas!
Its amazing what you can fix with duct tape/electrical tape and zip ties. (for tack anyhow!)
Pressure wash your blankets to save your washing machine
did you know bailing twine will cut bailing twine--- without a knife... you can see-saw bailing twine to open your hay bales!
can't think of everything now.. but please share your ideas.

A few ounces top dressed daily on the feed has given me great results. It's a race track thing. AV juice is in the herbal section at Walmart. Can find or order it at most drug stores but typically that's more expensive than at wally world.
PS : Some holistic docs suggest AV to their human patients. |

| For all the fly issues...has anyone had success with feeding garlic and/or vinegar to keep the flies away? Seems to work for me but I am located in WA and I don't think our flies are as vicious as those in the southern states...
PS. I love this thread, I am learning SO MUCH! |

| My own recipie for Rain Rot is 1/3 part MTG and 2/3 parts Original Listerine. In the summer I use another version of this for fly spray and to keep the coat soft and shiny. That would be 1/5 MTG 1/5 Skin So Soft and 3/5 Original Listerine. |

| For abscesses we took a horse to the vet the other day and he wrapped it up with axle grease for three days, the horse could walk.
warts on the muzzle- corona will take them right off.
home made fly spray- 1/4 cup citronella oil, 1/4 cup skin so soft, 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar, rest water- better than any fly spray on the market!!! |

If you are talking about the baby oil, listerene, conditioner mix... I use the green listerene. If you are worried about the color, my mare has a white mane and tail and if anything it brightened her mane.
I also add fabric softener too, only because when I got to the store I couldn't remember if I needed fabric softener or not... so I got it, then didn't want to waste it so I put some in anyway. |

| I don't know if anyone is interested but a great cure for scratches is hemorrhoidal ointment. I had been working with my vet and could not get them to heal up. I read somewhere to use hemorrhoidal ointment and it was just a matter of days and the scratches were healed up, GONE. Never had a problem before, but a couple of years ago we had a very wet year, so the pasture was always wet and my gelding developed scratches. Also when you apply the ointment, try to keep your horse in a dry area. |

| hemorrhoid Ointment works on cinch sores also. I have a mare 3 vets told me she had scratches, turned out she is allergic to Alsike clover and sunlight. I spent over a thousand dollars hauling her places and trying everything. Didn't let her out on rainy days, or till after the grass was dry in the morning. the rash usually started in summer and always cleared up in the fall. |

Ive had my share of wire cuts and hydrocortisone always does the trick. I just scrub the heck out of it everyday and then slap some of that stuff on and it heals like a charm. |

Location: IL | I keep my horses tail in a tail bag 24/7. It has grown a couple of inches in the past 8 months. I take the tail out once a week and wash it, brush it out. Then I braid it and put it back in the tail bag for another week! |

| Wash it and then soak it in conditioner. Any kind will work, Dont wash it out, brush it minimal, then braid it into three small saections with no rubber bands, and then again into one braid and use one large ponytail holder with no metal. Put it in a bag and leave it as long as possible. Do not take your horses tail out unless you go to a race or something important that you want to show em off. I have left my horses tails in for as long as 4 months and had great success with everything I have done this with. Good Luck!!! |

I am borrowing this from our local riding organization.
I'm assuming you don't wash off the show sheen remedy right? Got a show soon and wanna try it, but wanna make sure I don't have to wash it out afterwards, but I'm assuming that would defeat the purpose of it |

Location: Las Vegas, Nevada | Rose hips (this is where vitamin C comes from. Rose hips has the highest concentrate) works too for scratches. You can get the powder from http://www.starwest-botanicals.com/ or http://www.sfherb.com for good quality. 2 TBS per day. Its also good for the immune system, hooves, scratches.
For allergies/hives, Spirulina works good. Helps with the immune system and respiratory issues too. As with any herbs the longer they build up in the system the better they work.
2 TBS 2x a day = 4 TBS a day

I want a detangler that I don't have to washout, you have one of those.
I personally have used plain ole Aloe Vera Leaves... You can buy them at most supermarkets. I peal the leaves and blend the inside to a paste. I saturate the area I will work and start from the bottom-up... You don't have to worry about oils or alcohol. Yes oil and alcohol mixes tend to dissipate the alcohole out, but I don't like baby oil... baby oil has been known to collect and hold different live culture bacteria that can cause infections... plus baby oil gets real hot if you live in hot climates..like Florida...
Aloe paste will dry up after use and no residue left behind... and it is a natural skin and hair emollient... not only that.. it has no odors.

Electrolites.. I want to express here that you don't need any better than APPLES to restore Electrolites and Glycogen to your horse. Especailly after excersize...
Horses love them and they provide so many other benefits...
I see so many horse owners that swear up and down with what they already feed their baby.. but I tell you again ad again.. there is nothing better than NATURAL FOODS for your horse...NOTHING... the benefits are endless and your horse will have healthy and structural bowels.... remember this..... a horse with healthy bowels is a happy horse.. so love your horse and treat him/her to NATURAL FOODS.. you will never regret it...
And most important... remember that your horse is NOT a machine.. so love him/her continually.... in the end.... you will both be happy...
I wanted to share this guy with you all.. I love this guy.. He really understands horses and their NATURAL NEEDS AND BEHAVIORS... so much to learn folks... I am one that is always open for learning and this man has taught me a thing or too.... especially in LOVING YOUR HORSE...
Just watch him.. what a blessing.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SE7YAhnoxI

Location: Southern Michigan | My friend uses Mouth Wash as a liniment at shows after running.
I use Gelatin for Hoof Supplement.
Also heard of Metamucil for Sand Clear.
I use Apple Cider Vinegar and Baking Soda for washing dirty tails after a long winter- way better than shampoo.
Newest one I'm going to try is using Lavender oil for massages and extra calming at barrel shows.
And those pine pellets you can get for cleaning stall- works Awesome for using as Kitty Litter! (Not all cats like it though) But much cheaper and easier plus it smells much better too. |

| CINCH MEASURING MADE EASY ..
Always buy the cinches with the squared flat top buckle dees ... this
gives you a straight pull and even pressure at the top of the cinch
thru the entire cinch.
I also recommend using a roper cinch on barrel saddles ... they are
so tiny and most are poorly designed for weight distribution they
need all the stability they can get with a wider cinch.
Here is how to make your measurement for different saddles.
Tools needed... a pair of scissors, 4 ft piece of binder twine or
string, tape measure
Saddle your horse as if to ride to compress your pad.
Carefully take your cinch completely off without moving the saddle.
Tie one end of string to the off side and stretch it firmly under
horses belly and thru the near sided Dee of your saddle.
Now cut the string off at the bottom of your near sided Dee.
Go to the off side and cut string off at bottom of the Dee.
Now cut 16 inches off of the string you have left ..
Measure the string you have left ..
If it measures an odd number like 29 or 33 .. add an inch and
order a 30 or a 34.
Here is the cinch I have bought for years and use them on
every type of saddle .. note the square tops on cinch buckle,
stainless steel hardware, and the 31 strands will lay flat on
the breast bone due to the good retainer on these cinches.
Look at this link .. it has the above cinch and a picture of
what both sides of your cinched up horse to saddle should look like .....
pay attention to the pictures ... his logo patch belongs on the off side
of the horse ....>>>>>>>>>>>>
http://www.dmtack.com/products/11cr-dm-roper-cincha/
I also recommend using leather latigo straps on both sides to
allow a small amount of expansion along with the mohair
to give you horse a little breathing room but not losing any
stability in your saddle ...
