Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I take a peek at these every once and a while and it never fails to amaze me what someone wants to pay for the ultimate horse. facebook, not on here by the way. One wants a fancy broke horse that has all the bells and whistles and a stellar pedigree but only wants to pay $2500. I know there are a ton of nice horses that get over looked and are cheap (Scamper, Bozo etc), but in all reality, if I was in the market, I would expect to pay $4500 and up for a 3yr old "fancy" broke horse ready to pattern. More like $6500++ if it had a nice pedigree to back it up. |

| I agree, it takes me everything in my power not to respond.
But as with everyone it is a buyers market, and I do look for good deals, and do ask about bottom dollar.
I would like to ask what a stellar pedigree is to them, and what fancy broke is, as maybe my definitions/expectations are way higher then theirs. |

| I get a kick out of the ones asking for FREE horses and want them to be kid broke and no issues. Or the ones that have a halter broke 12 year old that they are "willing" to trade for a dead broke gelding under the age of 10. I have seen both of these in the past week! They've got more guts than I do to ask for that! |

I never comment on them, not sure I could always answer professionaly. I guess I just know from experience what it takes to get one to 3-4yrs old and have it "fancy" broke. I just got a 3yr old back that had 25 days, I gave him 2 weeks off (cause I am chicken in the snow and wind). Finally saddled him up, hauled him 2 hours away to a an indoor and hopped on. He rode off like an old broke ranch horse. If he were for sale his value would have just increased  |

It makes me wonder if they know that horses eat cash and intentionally try to kill themselves to keep the vets in business. |

| It takes alot for me not to respond. I see alot of people wanting beginner broke, sound, breed specific, gender specific, and under 10 for free or a few hundred, over we can make payments. Or for some reason alot of people in my area want a barrel horse but only want to spend up to a 1,000 or under. I say good luck with that. |

I bet it was the same one. Wonderful if they find something, but speaking from raising them, you just can't afford to let one go for that. I have friends that never get around to riding them after 30 days are put on ($750) so they take them back 2 or 3 times. In riding alone they will have $2500 in one. |

| I saw an ad the other day and couldn't tell if it was a joke or being serious.. This girl wanted a 1D horse for under $1000 but she'd go up to $1500 for the right horse. Then when everyone was telling her "good luck" she said she'd take a 2D horse if it fit her price range. Are people really that delusional? The world never ceases to amaze me. |

| People are truly delusional! I've been browsing the ads looking for a deal, and I just laugh at how ridiculous some of these ads are! They want to trade a bunch of junk (not broke, grade, crippled, etc) for a finished barrel horse. Or they are looking for their forever dream horse, must be under $1,000. Must be gray. And then they get mad if you offer something a little over their price range or not their specifications. Crazy! It might be a buyers market for just a horse, but if you want something that is worth something you're going to have to spend some money. Believe me, I've been looking for that deal and can't seem to find one! Although for not much money I could own a lot of unbroke, grade horses. (And I hate to admit it, but I did buy some unbroke, half-starved horses. Do you think anyone wants to trade for a finished barrel horse?! Ha!) |

| I had a nice 2D mare for sale a few years ago. I was asking 6,500 for her but had a bit of wiggle room so in my ad I stated that price was negotiable. I received an email one day from a girl about my age, asking if I would give her my horse for free because she didn't have any money, but she had a pasture (was working on building a barn) and would love her forever! I about died laughing. If you cannot afford a horse especially a 6k one then how on earth are you going to afford feed her, vet her etc. |

| I've been seeing wanted ads for other stuff too. Needed everything for my yearling because I don't have anything. Halter, leads, saddle pads, saddles, lunge lines, bridles, etc. Limited budget, anything you can give me would be great!

Location: East Texas | I have been looking through the sale ads and some of them are almost as bad....
*Ad says, "lots of flash" and it looks like a cross between a goat and a donkey.
*Ad claims they would be a great "step up horse".....step up is a vague term. My kids are 6 and 8 and have "stepped up" 4 times a piece already.
*Ad said it was a solid 2D horse.....video showed the clock and the rider posted a 3D time.
*Ad says horse is a 3/4D horse and would make a great HS rodeo horse...... Not in my corner of the world it won't.
BTW.....If any of you have a 1D barrel and pole horse for under $5K, sorrel, with one white sock, that is 6 or maybe 7, and you can haul it to TX...... |

| The ads that bother me are the ones for an older horse that they have owned all it's life or many years. Now the horse is getting some arthritis and only good for perhaps light riding, but they are wanting to find a "forever" home for the horse. The horse has given their life to them and then the people expect someone else to feed the horse through the final years of their life. Irritating. |

Location: Kansas | I'm going to put my experience out there.....Had my grey mare listed about a year old when money got tight. She was hitting 2D and rodeo money, had several videos BLAH BLAH BLAH.
Anyways, a girl who has posted looking for a cheap prospect....ended up emailing me about her. I had my mare priced accordingly, actually cheap for what I see most people asking for horses her level. The girl offered me $1,500. Then offered to trade me a grade black gelding that she said was "1D".....so I googled her name. That horse she wanted to trade my mare for wasn't even hitting the 4D (never once won any money). I respectfully declined. And I still see her post wanting these nice prospects for little money, and saying she will trade for her "finished" horse (that she bought from the sale barn a week before). |

| I had someone come to me and ask if I could help them find a safe, sane beginner friendly barrel horse preferably under 13 that would be competitive in the local high school rodeo district. I thought that would be no biggy to find until I asked what their budget was. When she responded $2,500 but they could go up to $3,000 if it was the right fit I politely told her I would keep my ears open but a horse of that quality would probably run AT LEAST 3 times that!
They are show and reining horse people. I think people who do not follow the barrel horse world really don't have a clue what is involved in making them competitive. I have had several show horse people tell me anyone can train a barrel horse, all they do is run and turn a barrel and they don't have to be broke to do it. It can't be that hard!

In the horse wanted ads, it seems like I am always seeing ads looking for a very fast, young horse, with no maintenance issues clocking 2D or better for 2-3,000 dollars. YEAH RIGHT |

Right now I am looking for a unicorn x pegasus, MUST be super broke, 1D proven record with videos and placings. This pegacorn MUST be white (not grey) with either pink or blue mane or tail. Also, this pegacorn will have to be children safe, be able to be ridden once a week to keep fit and firing and MUST be maintenance free. I am willing to pay $500.
I agree with you all obviously . . . I get so crazy when I see want ads for children safe, been there done that horses, show condition etc for $500, or rodeo quality horses for a similar price. I know we do all want a bargain but come on, seriously.
Again, I know those bargains are out there but they are few and very far between. |

I always get people coming to me asking if I know anyone with a horse for sale for under $2,000.00 or sometimes less that runs 2d, safe, sound etc etc... I just tell them nope, those are very rare to find and if I found one I"D be buying it!!! |

For the most part I don't think most of the people posting these types of ads have a clue what it cost to get a horse just broke and handling good (more than they are willing to pay) let alone to the level they are looking for. It makes me wonder if they even know what it costs to properly care for a horse, just feed alone is expensive. |

I see these all the time... listed as 1D horse... I look up the horse and find nothing but 3D placings (like that same month at several different shows). If you are going to make the claim, make sure there is SOMETHING to back it up when someone googles your horse...somewhere
Sure my gelding has won classes at our local saddle club a couple times or been in the 1D....but somewhere like an IBRA super show and we are probably bottom of 2D or 3D. I'm not about to tout him as a 1D horse LOL |

OK there's 2 sides to this coin. We have my daughters' old rope mare that is now 25.(we bought her when she was 20) The mare's arthritis is such that we can no longer rope on her at the level my daughter wants to, BUT, she is sound enough for a little peewee to use. Because I had a bad experience loaning her out, she sits at home, depressed, not being used. And I can't bring any other horse home for my daughter to rope on because I am at my max for how many I can reasonably care for. So, sometimes, it is best for a family and the horse to let a new kid have them |

I agree with you that not all those ads are because they don't want to take care of the horse, I have a 27 year old right now loaned out for the 3rd time. He had a roping accident and messed his back up and wouldn't pull anymore and then as he got older arthritis set in. He goes from kid to kid, each time he goes to younger and younger kids because he is just getting old. He's coming home next week because the boy out grew him and they can't justify feeding him and quite frankly they said they don't want him to pass away on their place. I don't blame them. He's coming home to babysit my 3 yr old and this will probably be where he will pass. I understand those ads and don't blame them for trying to find the horse another home, not because they don't want the responsibility of taking care of it but to see the horse get used to its ability in that stage of its life. |

I don't make fun of people on a budget. I don't have the nicest trailer in the world either, but really??? Do people honestly expect to find a NICE trailer under $2k?

He needs to be trotted some on a rope before getting on him. Laid back and easy going. He is ready to go run, he needs to go to barrel races. 2D horse right now with not being ran but a few times, and going to one barrel race. Will trail ride also.
