Does anyone have recommendations on someone in South Dakota who can start a horse under saddle? He's a 2 yr old FG and I really want him broke correct to be a barrel horse. Thanks!

Rodney Yost.  He's insanely talented.  I don't know if he's taking outside horses right now but it would be WELL worth the wait.

Rodney Yost or Kyle Gilmore.  My first choice is my brother, but he retired....except for his favorite sister.  What part of SD do you live?

where are you located? Over here west river, I have used Eric Addison (who use to work for Bill Myers, and has a lot of experience starting FG's) and also currently have a horse with James Pease, who does a fantastic job of getting one really broke, and really spends a lot of time with each horse. I like them both. I don't like to ride anything that rides really green, and with both of those guys I got horses back that I could do anything with after 60-90 days.

I agree with both of these. I just got an outside FG stud in that was with Eric for 30 days, and he is soft in the face, moves his shoulder, stops and backs really well. And he hasn't been bullied into it--he is relaxed and willing, no marks on his mouth or corners. I rode with James in college, and he can get one super broke, andd last I knew he was not rough with them either.

My sister in law is THE BEST!!!  She breaks all of our colts to ride and she broke our stud Lions Share Of Fame!!  SHe is really quiet and a tiny person so she doesnt stress their joints!  Everything she breaks has an awesome feel and are so quiet!  She is in Brookings SD and has an indoor barn to ride in !

He starts all of mine now but he's got a 2+ year waiting list right now.
Hopefully will get caught up once he gets an indoor put up.
I've had pretty good luck with Kyle Krause and I've heard Cody Wilson does a really good job too.

East River I was sure pleased with Tad Enck. He is northwest of Madison about 40 miles.   If you are in that area message me and I will give you his number.

Just an FYI, I've seen 2 that Kyle Krouse rode.  One was my MIL's mare, the other belonged to a friend of mine.  My opinion is I wouldn't let him ride my dead donkey.
I know Eric Addison somewhat and I've seen his horses and they look great, and I've always heard good things about him.

I have heard so many good things about her and would use her in a heartbeat.  I love how she rides.  It's her horsemanship that I hear so much about.....nothing to do with the fact that she runs barrels.  That's just a bonus.

Gosh, that stinks.  Kyle always did a good job for us.  I'm pretty picky about who I'll have start mine.  My horses always came back from him in good shape and riding really well.  He even took several off the track horses for me and did a nice job with them. Some of them were pretty fractious too but came home riding quiet and with a lot of feel.
I finally got Rodney to take ours after being on his waiting list for over 2 years.  He's a lot closer to me so it's easier to get them out there and back home.
Here's a video of the last one Kyle broke for me, and this was typical of how they would come back.  This was a 2 year old Dash Ta Fame daughter, and it was my first ride on her after his initial 30 days.  She'd just sat for 2 weeks prior to me getting on her and taping this:

I love how Rodney starts colts.  I have to say there are those on this board that really knock people who send horses off for 30 days and expect them to be broke when they get back.  I don't argue about it, I just sit here and grin thinking how lucky we are that we do have guys here in SD that we can get horses back after 30 days riding like the one you have posted and they aren't pushed into it.  Now that my brother is so busy on his ranch he doesn't take outside horses but I can sweet talk him into taking mine since I don't have a lot of them.  They come back riding like the one you posted.   Love riding after these guys.
