When someone advertises a horse as 1d2d do ya'll get frustrated when you google said horse's registered name and come up with 3d/4d results? I've got 2 horses right people have told me are 1d/2d now that this has happened with me, I know we all have bad days and bad runs even on the best horse, but if the only results you can find are NOT in the 1 or 2D frustrates me...

Yep. Finally asked myself why do I have my gelding for sale, when he's exactly what I am looking for??? I got tired of searching through ads looking at horses who claimed to be in the 1D and 2D and finding maybe one 2d result somewhere in a ton of 3D results. When here my own ad had a LIST of his 1D and 2D MONEY EARNING runs. So I figured why sell what's not broke. LOL.

When I had my horse for sale I had you tube videos along with the adds labeled with the date, barrel race and where it was at and approx how many runners. Adds with that info should weed out some of the horses

Ahhhhh...the old Classic "1D/2D" label.

And when ya call 'em on their less-than-ethical business practices??

"Well....They're 1D SOMEWHERE." like in the pasture at home??? uuuggghhh

Speaking of less-than-ethical practices...having a "Pre-purchase exam" done by your husband the small animal vet is NOT COOL. Done ranting now. Have to laff at the idjits who believe it and buy said horses...and stick up for the losers afterwards. OK I had to add a bit more.

I just listed my 1 and 2d horse, and unfortunately since I never thought I'd sell her, a lot of races were not entered with her registered name. Also, I've had her for so long and trained her myself, so there has been several 3d/4d runs those first few years, plus my first few runs back after me having babies and taking a long break :-)
Not sure if this is the same for other people, but possible. I did however put a bunch of videos with my ad, so hopefully that will show how she usually runs

It all goes back to doing your homework. What one person interprets as 1D another considers something else. The other factor to consider is consistency-and that is where it is not black and blue and people will draw their own conclusions off of that.

ETA: I meant black and white!!!!! LOL!!!!

We have a local fruitcake that tries selling horses as 1D/rodeo when she's lucky to be in the 3D at small jackpots.  Drives me nuts.  I have had people contact me on her horses before they write the check for them, I have no problem showing them the results to any of the jackpots I have produced.

I agree! What blows my mind is in a day and age where everything is online and easily looked up, why people blatently lie about this kind of thing. I have looked up lots of horses that are advertised for a bunch of money and they say they won this and that and I can't find anything on them. When I put videos online I try to always put in the comments section of the video- where the race was, date, time my horse ran, time that won it, how many entries, and where my horse placed ( like won 2nd in the 2d, or was in the bottom of the 1d) that way if I ever want to sell, I have it all written down for everyone to see and look up to confirm. In my for sale ad I always tell people where to find results. I'd rather sell a horse for less money to someone who knows what they are getting, than sell a horse for a lot more money to someone who thinks they have something they don't.

I sold a horse a few years ago and the girl kept asking me what her times were.  I kept telling her that we had no arenas the same size, and I had never run her in a standard size pen.  All I could tell her that she was 2D locally (85-100) head and at the large races she was 4D.  I always take the 1D/2D with a grain of salt because back in Indiana the local jackpots usually have 80 head or better and since moving to Kansas you are lucky to see 30.  What I am more concerned with is how they run at the large shows and that can be misleading.  Sold a gelding that with me was only 3D or 4D, the people I sold them too won big time in the 1D with him.  Difference in the push and weight.  You cannot judge by the division but must look at the horse.

Depends on how it is advertised....records do speak...but what if the horse trips or the rider is not that good of a hand? If they work the way I like and look like they have some speed, I would go ride it...also, the level of competition has a lot to do with it...placing 1d at a small jackpot or placing at a large event is two different things in my opinion

When I was shopping back in the summer I went to try a gelding, she wanted $15,000k for him. She told me he had a reining horse handle, anyone from 2 to 99 could ride him etc... I drove half the day to go see him, I even started to take my trailer. I liked the looks of the horse but as soon as I step on he takes off and starts running all over the place. I gather him up and try to give him a chance but he clearly doesn't know a thing. He rides like a mule. I step off and tell her nicely he doesn't have a good handle at all, she gets mad and goes into a rant that she doesn't have junk horses etc.....Now I haven't said anything bad and have been nice the entire time but the owner blows up. I was so mad that I spent all day and $200 in gas to ride a mule. It really comes down to luck when shopping for a horse because even if they ride great the chance of a soundness issue showing up is likely !! And also the chance of the horse not being what is represented is likely!!

Well I had a very nice 1d/2d horse for sale I just sold a couple months ago and when I googled my name or my horses, I couldn't find any results except for a couple of bad days when we were in the 3d. So you can't always trust google search. But I did refer people to the associations I ran in and they had all the results on their website. And I always ran my horse under her registered name.

This ^. My mare is a solid 2D horse but at this past world show we had some pretty awful runs - I think one was even in the 4D, which is just terrible. And I know since its NBHA it will pop up on google if anyone were to search her registered name. Im not saying to not trust google, because ive used it myself on several occasions. Just know there are some exceptions. Even nice horses have bad days.

I drove all day to try a horse that was advertised as having everything I was looking for. I drove a long way and spent a ton on gas and the horse rode like a mule. If it takes two hand to drag you horses head around to turn it and both hands and feet to get it stopped it does NOT have a good handle, much less a reining horse handle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Its the sellers dishonesty period! I don't think it is possible to find a true 1-D horse that is sound completely' The only way you will get a horse like that is word of mouth or build your own. Nobody needs to advertise a good horse and they usually don't!!

I agree with ya'll that if you look up my horse's name since I trained him we have loads of 3/4 results and heck some are even recent from off runs but I also have videos of us winning jackpots or our 1d/2d runs in big entried jackpots. I feel like if you know you and the horse don't click then explain that, I sold a mare that I KNEW was a good solid 1D with a good fit but I couldn't do her justice and I explained that to anyone who asked.

I'm not I. The business of selling horses BUT I always take a picture of the final results showing the entire 1 and 2 D and where my horse placed out of how many.  He is a true 1D/2D horse and I have toyed around with the idea of selling him so I track everything.

About every show around here is IBRA, a quick search and I can find a horses results. Most people don't get that. Sometimes I'll ask what times were ran at a certain arena to get a guess of where the horse runs.

Really though this is why I only buy prospects, I don't want to get cheated. Unless I know the horse.

Yep, don't trust anyone! It really sucks to be a buyer or HONEST seller in todays market. I always watch the video before even looking for results and can usually tell if it's really a 1D horse, however I'd say more times than not, if they're advertised as 1D/2D, they're really 4D.

Makes it hard for an honest seller to get anything sold also, so not just frustrating for those of us trying to buy.

I have two barrel horses for sale right now. I have tried to put as much accurate information as possible in my ads.
Here is the problem with my horses and a Google search right now - I have a trainer taking them to jackpots for me (and she has done so for the last 4 months because I am very busy), and she has been very inconsistent with the use of their names when she has entered them. At some of the jackpots she enters them with their registered names, at some of them she has entered them with their barn names, and there have even been a few times that she has entered them under their registered name but it has been incorrect. Argh!
So if someone does a Google search, unless they know all of the "names" they have been entered under they will never see their accurate records. Of course I can tell a person that if they call to inquire about one of my horses, but otherwise they won't know. And I feel totally stupid putting something like that in their ads.

Ive also thought .. what about those people who have 1 and 2d horse but are not 1 and 2 d riders? If they have results from the previous owner would that suffice? Id think a lot depends on the rider too. But if I'm spending 1d money I want to see 1d results... I agree on that part. I also think it would help to know how much the horse was bought for.. but so.e would say thats no o es business...

My humor has always been, I have a 1D horse and Im a 3D rider ( almost 60 and 25# overweight), and we land in the 2D alot at big shows and 1D at local NBHA. I would advertise him as a 1D/2D horse, ridden by a 3D rider LOL!

Dates affect a lot- When the horse was younger and in training they might have entered more races and placed 3D and 4D. As the horse got better they might have entered limited bigger races and became 1 or 2D. Then maybe life got in the way after the horse improved (vehicle problems/vet problems/job /life events etc.). There is no telling what may have come up. Maybe just ask for 1/2D results or show event info.

My horse ran 1D poles last night (with a 24....something). Not our best run, out of practice and shape. But the top time was a 23 something. It all depends....

Plus the name thing mentioned earlier. If I'm late I get a buddy to sign me up and they know barn names and not registered names.

BUT- a good googler can find anything. I found all online results for my grade mare that I purchased based on former owners name and her name. Seperate searches with critical punctuation. For example if you want to search for all results for Frenchmans guy, you wouldn't just google frenchmans guy. Have to get more technical and type "Frenchmans Guy" Race or "Frenchmans Guy" Barrel or "Owners Name" barn name. All sorts of variation with the quotation marks to limit results to specific names or phrases. It can be done with determination.

I found the breeder for my "grade" filly with only a last name and the location of North Mississippi to look for. I was the third owner. I offered to DNA the breeders herd of mares to find the mother and the lady still wouldn't help me get her papers. Irresponsible breeder who free roams horses on public land (reservoir) and gave away 5 foals. Great older bloodlines and she finally gelded the stud by the time I found her. Internet can be a great tool for owner, bloodline, result research that is for sure.

I had an ad with a video that had the crowd making a lot of noise when the time was called and the announcer saying "new leader" at the end. The horse won the 1D there and a buyer could look that up. The horse was young and had already won an open rodeo by two tenths as well as place at some other rodeos and been 1D at other barrel races. I received a ton of flack from people who Googled the horse's name and found 2D/3D results. They were simply not smart enough to look at the dates and consider that those results were from the early part of her four year old year!! Newsflash...they are not born in the 1D. Many people are like me in that they start them slowly and gradually add speed. Finding lower division results on a horse does not bother me that much. I have learned that many people do not run their horses under their real name until they are really clocking because of people looking them up. That does not mean the horse has always had a 1D time; it could be that they ran under another name (barn name, Horse 1, Horse 2) until they started clocking. Sometimes they approach the entry person and ask them to change Horse 2 to the registered name (after they have clocked a good time).

In short, I do not let Google choose my horses for me. I do look them up but for the most part, I can watch a few videos and see what I need to know and sometimes I call people in the horse's area and ask about them. Btw...the horse that I advertised did sell locally to someone who knew her and she went on to win lots of rodeo and 1D money...placed 4th out of 500 plus entries, etc. Google is great but it probably should your sole source of information when choosing a horse.

That's why I like taking photos of the results at our races.  I have about two dozen or more photos of wins/placings but if you google my horse you only find his NBHA super show placings and thats it.

Totally agree with this. Apparently a lot of the more local races just don't put the horse's names with the results either, even the added money ones I go to. Here in Oklahoma a lot of the same people run at the "local" races that run at the "big shows", so it's not far off really. Pretty tough here to even be in the 1d at smaller jackpots most of the time. I googled mine and could find results from a couple big shows when I first entered her in 05! She's definitely not that same green horse now. But I do really wish I'd kept better records than I have. We've got references though and a lot of people who know the horse, so agreeing with you that you shouldn't rely on just a google search.

No, it would not suffice for me. If I am going to pay 1D/2D price- it better be running 1D/2D right now. There are a lot of horses who were 1D horses with previous riders, and the current rider now has them in the 3D, or 4D… and sometimes they don't go back to the 1D. I would not pay the same price. It would intrigue me that maybe with work and tuning they could get back there, but that's the key- it's going to take work and tuning. it's not always just switch riders and poof its a miracle! Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
