It's been forever since I've posted photos of Jug's feet!  I've been working every single night with only a handful of days off since August and I'm exhausted..but wanted to show some pics I took today.  He's still 100 % sound and NO HEEL PAIN!!!  The only reason I have not been riding on a regular basis is because of my work schedule, but he's getting put on the walker when I can and ridden some.  I'm soooo ready to get him in good shape so we can start working barrels, but my job is killing me!

So, I'll start with photos from a year ago when he had his last shoes and then show you today's photos.  And for those who don't know Jug's story, I'll copy this from my original barefoot thread that is now archived:

Chronically lame 10 yr old gelding with laminitis/MRI confirmed navicular/long toe/low heel/contracted heels/crushed & underrun heels/thin soles. Has had shoes on since before I bought him at 3 1/2 yrs old and every vet said he COULD NOT go without shoes due to his thin soles. I never knew what I'd see when I walked out to catch him. Usually had a slight on/off limp. Tried 3 different shoers and went to 56899532 vets with multiple x-rays and a confirmed negative palmer angle on left front and right front flat at 0 degrees. Second shoer did get the negative palmer to go back to 0 degrees and right front to go positive. Third shoer was the most aggressive, but only worked on him twice before I decided to pull the shoes. Had his first barefoot trim on Sept 27, 2012 (about 2 1/2 months ago?). Has not taken ONE lame step since pulling shoes. Was slightly gimpy over rocks and hard-packed clay for the first two weeks or so. Now moves completely fine over all of my ground here at home and it has been dry as a bone until a this week. Rides fine with or without boots/pads. I was riding him for up to 2 hours a day ponying other horses and he was holding up perfect, but I am NOT competing on him due to thin soles and damaged feet until they completely grow out.

Thank you so much for your help!

That left heel did contract for a while because he suffered a huge, long term abscess on his right rear heel (thats the only reason I can think that it had uncontracted and then re-contracted), but it's now un-contracting again.  He's mostly turned out and I was wanting to leg him back up this summer, but after having a trimmer read his MRI results she encourgaged me to give him more time to heal those soft tissue injuries he had within the feet.  Then I got busy at work and now it's been just over a year since we pulled his shoes.  So, hopefully I've given him enough time to safely go back to hard riding??  LOL  I'm soooo ready because he feels so good and is moving beautifully.

I would start riding him, yes.  He's had plenty of time to heal and just start slow.  Great job!

This is my favorite comparison with his left front heel!  It really shows how that hairline went from a deep "V" to nearly ground level.  No wonder those heels were hurting so bad!

LOL!  I had no idea what feet were SUPPOSED to look like or MOVE like.  He's got the most beautiful movement now!  Love watching him flick that foot forward and landing so smooth on his heels!  Nothing like he used to move!  Live and learn!

Oh, it really makes me sick now....when I look at feet.  And when I hear of all these "navicular" diagnosed horses!  I think, wow, wonder what would happen if they just gave them some time to grow out those feet WITHOUT shoes and WITHOUT injections/surgeries.  But I know most are just like I was, and follow what their vets are telling them...."Oh NO WAY can we let him go without shoes!" Well, sure....if you don't boot them and help them along....it will be excrutiating for them...but boy, what a difference you can make in their lives  AND your pocketbook!!! LOL

And just to remind you guys of how bad he once looked... when all the board members were screaming "GET A NEW FARRIER!!!" I sure thought all those pads and wedges were gonna help him, but only helped him short-term!

Thank all of you so much! I'm trying to faithfully rasp him once a week so we can continue to pull back the toes and get those heels to stand up. He gets trimmed by my barefoot trimmer every 4 weeks and she's improved all of my horses' hooves immensely. But his soundness speaks for itself. For a horse that was limping on/off  for years and even when the second farrier had him looking the best he was still lame. This was the best decision I made for him and it was largely due to a great farrier located in north Texas that told me how beneficial going barefoot can be. He told me to check out Pete Ramey and the rest is history!

I love this! His "after" feet look so much healthier. It makes me sad to see the hoof overlapping the too-small shoes in one of the pictures. Ick!!! It must feel like wearing a friend's high heels that are a size too small.

In EIGHT WEEKS time look at how these heels have changed! Not to mention the foot shape changing from oval to more round! I couldn't get the entire pics to fit in my collage program because I'm technically challenged! LOL

Your horses feet look great! I have one suggestion for you if you are going to be running barrels... We need traction on different types of ground. I never trim my horses frog and I never take off any sole. The frog will shed by itself when it is suppose to. The more frog on the hoof, the better. I let the water line grow out and form a "rim", so to speak, to add traction. Also, your horses heels are fine like they are. He has a great angle to his hoof and I wouldn't change anything. Those heels are perfect. Congrats!

PS... This is just my opinion... After 20+ years of barefoot horses. ;-)

Edited to say... His heels will continue to spread over time. Just rasp them gently as they grow under.

I'm not back to running him, yet, but we became way more aggressive with those heels and toes about 6 months ago. I've been faithfully rasping heels and toes to try to bring them back more. This barefoot is pretty easy since I nor the trimmer ever take any frog or sole off. I barely trust myself with the rasp! LOL but I am hoping to allow more of a "rim" once we get the heels/toes backed up to where we want them. Both of his inside heels were more under-run that the outside heels. I sure do hope he doesn't need help for traction once I start running him! I've never run him without shoes, but he's more sound than he's ever been. So, you just keep the walls a little longer than the sole to give you that rim around the edges?

Not really... You don't want the walls longer because it will cause them to pull away from the white line. It's the water-line that grows out. The clear line that you see on the bottom. You want the white line to be tight. My gelding has never been shod... His hoof grows big and round with very little sole from the point of frog to the toe. He has a natural arch if you look at his hoof from the side, and he doesn't have a lot of heel. And he can handle any kind of ground. I will take a pic of it when the weather warms up this weekend and post it. Here is a link to some great pics.

Wonder how close-up photos of your horses face/eyes would look along w/ the hoof change photos. There had to have been a wrinkle or two in the muzzle that disappeared or a glow in the eye that would have appeared in later photos!.

what pretty looking feet you've got there!

has it just been farrier work that has helped your boy? or have you given any sort of supplement or anything to help with growth/hoof health?

LOL.... I know....Poor guy has given me his all despite having such painful feet.  And to think there were people who told me to "whip his @ss" and make him run when he would act up in the warm up pen! LOL  I knew better.  He's my heart and soul and will be forever!  There is nothing like the feeling he gives me when he turns a fast one.  And NOTHING like feeling like a winner when you know it's all him making you look like you know what you are doing. Bahaha!  I love my Jugs!!!

I can tell you that my vet can no longer pay his mortgage since I went barefoot! LOLOLOL!!!!

Crowned Image - 2014-01-24 1:11 PM what pretty looking feet you've got there! has it just been farrier work that has helped your boy? or have you given any sort of supplement or anything to help with growth/hoof health?

Not ONE ounce of hoof supplements or magnets or hoof dressings....this is what proper diet/exercise and BAREFOOT trimming can do for you!!!  I've learned to use the rasp once a week on him and he gets trimmed by my trimmer every 4 weeks.  It took a WHOLE YEAR to grow out my horses' feet when they were shod and on supplements, magnetic bell boots, blisters, etc.  Barefoot...it took them 6-8 months with NONE of that!!!  I am a barefoot fanatic now!  Can you tell??? LOL

Thank you for sharing.  I am also starting a barefoot journey.  I will be attending a school from equine applied podiatry.  I don't know if my older horse will be able to go barefoot on the front, but I intend to go without on the hinds.  My younger horses won't be shod.  I just keep using a rasp and getting advice from my NB farrier.  Hoping the school will help me get better at it.
There once was a time I was dead set against it, now I am all for it if the horse can do well without shoes.

That's awesome about the school! I'm still learning as much as I can! Before I tried barefoot on my OTTB I thought it was just a crock of crap and an all "natural" cult. Then I joined the cult! LOL

They look great!  I wish mine could/would go bare foot.  I tried it for 6 months and they never quit acting like they were going to die, gave in and put the shoes back on.

I'd love to learn from your experience. I've only transitioned my 4.
Why do you think they had a hard time transitioning? What type of ground do you have at home? Did you have a barefoot trimmer or regular farrier working on them? Did you boot them?

My regular farrier who does barefoot trims.  My guy was out long term with an injury so took the opportunity to pull shoes.    I think my farrier knew what he was doing but don't really know.   My ground was really hard gumbo, I have since moved.   I did not put boots on him for fear he might trip and aggregate his suspensory.    I now have soft rides for everyone and would love to try again.
I go to a lot of pens that have rocks, etc getting to and from pen which makes me think twice..

Wow! Love seeing this! I'm new to barefoot riding/running and loving what I see! I was forced to race barefoot when leasing a horse for a few years his owner didn't want me to have him shod....best thing ever! My real turning point was when I was at a competition footing sucked and all the horses where slipping or falling. Everyone were getting really scared and so was I! Myself and one other rider didn't have any trouble....found out neither were shod!!!

I just posted on a thread about navicular corrective shoeing and said try barefoot.....I hoped it might at least plant the seed in their minds but I also figure everyone may just roll their eyes and think I'm crazy ...but I really think its the best chance. I've read and seen some amazing turn arounds!

Its been a hard road going barefoot ...no pun intended ...not the barefoot part but the closed mindedness! I don't know about any of you but I get a lot of "are you crazy....no shoes?" "You should really put shoes on him" "I take care of my horse". It makes it hard and at first you start to second guess yourself.

Its so nice to see those Beautiful hooves

Oh, it really makes me sick now....when I look at feet.  And when I hear of all these "navicular" diagnosed horses!  I think, wow, wonder what would happen if they just gave them some time to grow out those feet WITHOUT shoes and WITHOUT injections/surgeries.  But I know most are just like I was, and follow what their vets are telling them...."Oh NO WAY can we let him go without shoes!" Well, sure....if you don't boot them and help them along....it will be excrutiating for them...but boy, what a difference you can make in their lives  AND your pocketbook!!! LOL

My guy was diagnosed classic navicular...I did everything I could and surgery was unavoidale. He was barefoot for 2.5 years...

I am a HUGE barefoot proponent...been a barefoot trimmer for 12 years and have seen a huge transformation in many horses feet. Of course my horse has to be dificult and goes best in egg bars (much to my dismay).

Your guy looks great!!!

So awesome! Love to hear stories like yours! I thought the vets and farriers knew best and wasted thousands of dollars. The change that barefoot has made in all of my horses is amazing! They all have great feet that are no longer falling apart. 3 out of the 4 have no issues walking over rocks. Jug is kept off or booted since we are being so aggressive with his trim. But never did I even think of boots as an option for protecting them when they needed it. I always just thought I HAD to shoe them. And the greatest thing ever is never having to worry about pulled shoes or scheduling resets before races!

Can you tell me how you and your vets decided on surgery? Was an MRI done? Did he have changes in his bone? My trimmer has a horse that was so bad for so long that his coffin bone has eroded at the tip and she HAS to boot him to ride. It's tough when the damage is too severe. Glad my boy has made it this far.

I have quite a few races coming up then my schedule slows down.  I am pulling shoes after March 12th.  My farrier was showing me the difference in my retired guys feet whose shoes were pulled about a year ago and my shod horses.  Wish me luck :).

Not going to pick your feet apart, but some people think this foot looks good.

I know you said this is before trimming.

If you look bottom left by the bars, there is some gravel in the white line, this can be the start of white line disease, or what some people call seedy toe. This horse doesn't have much thickness in hoof wall, this could be genetics, but I like to see a little more.

The other thing I notice is the black around the frog can be early onset thrush. I would also want to pare away half an inch around the frog, as this will help with the expansion and contraction of the foot.

Lol... I appreciate the critique. But actually, the pic of the right front is after the trim. This horse is 5 and has never had his frog trimmed or sole removed from his foot. He has great hoof walls...when I trim him I trim back to the waterline and roll the hoof wall back at the toe. He has NO seedy toe, nor the start of it, and tbat is a natural frog. This is what a natural hoof looks like. All that has been done is a little shaping (his entire life) to keep that wall from breaking off. And as for that thin hoof wall... nobody has to worry about it, cause he's not for sale. ;-) You can walk him across any ground you want. He has never taken a lame step. Dr Honnas said "that colt has some of the best feet I have seen in a in awhile". And... he's a 1d horse that has already chalked up a few pretty nice wins. I guess the proof is in the pudding. ;-)

Hey guys! I've been in a total funk, but have been riding ALOT the past few weeks and my boy is more sound than he's ever been. My mare is doing great, as well. I'm just trying to focus on getting them legged up which isn't an easy task with the hours I work and having to deal with PSSM with the mare. My navicular nightmare gelding is having to do a lot of extra work by ponying the PSSM mare in order to keep her from being so back sore. LOL So, right now our rides are slow and long. I've got him built up to 12 minutes of trotting and the remainder walking. He's being worked 1-1 1/2 hours a day. I plan on taking new pics on the next trim in two weeks. I really have neglected my horses the past 6 months and just couldn't get back into the groove of riding. But I'm trying my best to get back into the habit!

Forgive me ... but WHY???  If you pare more of the foot around the frog, aren't you removing the bars of the hoof that are needed for internal support??  I am not a barefoot guru nor am I a certified farrier but ... this doesn't make sense to my knowledge of equine anatomy at all.

My slightly educated mind agrees. My trimmer takes the stance of "less is more" and rarely touches anything on the sole or frog. It has taken longer to get the results we wanted with Jug but he's been able to work and ride, where as before he wasn't even pasture sound. As we became more aggressive with pulling the toes and heels back, I always booted him for rides. He needed the extra protection. Every horse is different as far as how long it will take, but his feet were so severely under run for so long it's been quite a challenge. The important thing is that he is SOUND even though he doesn't have the beautiful foot shape that Grinandbareit's horse does. That is our obvious goal, but more importantly that he is no longer toe stubbing lame! He's landing beautifully heel first...on heels that had significant internal damage!
