Since Shimmer is out of commission for the winter, my barn owner is letting me ride her horse while she's down south for the winter. I'd never even seen him before, but another boarder who knows him was there. I could NOT get him to pick up his left lead or even bend left. He'd give his head standing still both directions though. The lady was freaking about because she'd never seen him look so good. I asked her about it and she said they've never been able to get the left lead and are completely baffled. So barring any pain issues, any suggestions for getting him soft and picking up that left lead.

I would go back to basics. Work in circles to the left. Stop if the horse picks up the wrong lead. You might try working in the round pen unsaddled to pick up that lead. Then try it saddled. Sounds like the horse was never taught to pick up the left lead. Horses' sides are not connected in any way (brain) You have to teach them on each side. Sounds like someone did not do this.

Yeah, I haveno history on this horse so no idea what kind of training he has. Not even sure how old he is! I'll probably break out the lunge line and see, but I would assume his owner would have tried that.
