The speed at which society has advanced technologically has made people more narcissistic & attention-craving than ever. Every time I see someone post a selfie I want to comment "Here, here is some attention...is that enough to make you feel good about yourself today?"
I really have a problem with it. Not the occasional 'new hair' or 'dressed up' or whatever, but the CONSTANT selfie-taking & posting makes me feel nothing but disdain for the selfie-taker. Feel good about yourself because you like yourself, not because other people hit a 'like' button on a stupid picture you took. Of yourself. By yourself. With no friends because you're too wrapped up in yourself to realize that other people actually physically exist in the world, not just on your facebook page.
Okay, rant over. I haven't had enough coffee today, apparently.

I actually have a hilarious story from the Missed Connections CL site.
Guy I work with came in with a MC post he'd found re: another co-worker. It was from a girl who had seen him at a restaurant & they had "shared a deep, meaningful glance"...she proceeded to find him on facebook, send him a huge long message about how she wasn't crazy & he should get to know her. When he forwarded me the message & the profile...it was a CRAZY girl I went to high school with. Still cracks me up when I think about it - oh & her facebook page is filled with selfies & pictures of her FEET. |

The only ones that make it to be posted are when I have done some kind of damage to myself, ie. when I loped myself in to a tree branch and put good size gash on my temple, when I was lunging my ADHD/Bi-Polar mare after she had been laid off a week and she did her Airs Above the Ground and I became a Dirt Angel Outline...that type of stuff. When its too funny not to share no matter how bad you look or to support how bad the wreck, LOL!!
I have an ex-gymnast that is very self involved, her entire facebook page is selfies, to me it is heartbreaking. I had no idea when she was in gym that her self esteem was that low that she basically sits home all day and takes pictures of herself. I wanna tell her life isn't about how you look but how you live it, get busy doing that please! |

I am with you run. I can't remember the last time I tooka picture and it was just me. And I can't ever think of a time I would do that just for social media. Now, a pic with my horse or my hubby or friends-way different story. I love taking pictures with them! But just me? Um, no. I ain't that good looking enough to do that. If I was, say Charlize Theron, I might be persuaded to though!!!
Ashton takes pictures of herself all of the time. We get into the truck and she has her phone out taking a picture. Dude, we are headed to ride!!!! Not for a modeling shoot! I haven't quite figured it out yet but I am about to start making fun of her. |

My facebook mainly has pictures of my kid and my animals and a couple of my husband (he hides when a camera comes out lol). His Profile pic on his facebook is me and him 6 or 7 years ago lol, before we were even engaged.
I just posted 3 of my cat this morning lol.
I know most of my friends on FB personally (family for the most part)... they know what I look like lol. |

The speed at which society has advanced technologically has made people more narcissistic & attention-craving than ever. Every time I see someone post a selfie I want to comment "Here, here is some attention...is that enough to make you feel good about yourself today?"
I really have a problem with it. Not the occasional 'new hair' or 'dressed up' or whatever, but the CONSTANT selfie-taking & posting makes me feel nothing but disdain for the selfie-taker. Feel good about yourself because you like yourself, not because other people hit a 'like' button on a stupid picture you took. Of yourself. By yourself. With no friends because you're too wrapped up in yourself to realize that other people actually physically exist in the world, not just on your facebook page.
Okay, rant over. I haven't had enough coffee today, apparently.
Couldn't agree more with what you said. As to the "selfies", I always think: Do these people look in the mirror and say to themselves "I look so awesome today I simply must share"? Or perhaps what truly drives them (which I tend to think might be more the truth) is being so insecure and so in need of attention and affirmation that maybe FB friends provide them with every "like" and positive comment. The bad part of that is what if they don't get the likes and comments......
Same thing with needing to tell the world amount their "amazing" or "awesome" boyfriend/husband, child, or horse. I love my husband, my kids, grandkids and horses but I just don't particularly feel the need to convince the world that they are totally awesome or amazing. I can say to my husband or kids in person what I need to without going through FB to do it. |

The last selfie I took was back in August but it was because one of my uncles made me a name tag. Apparently my cousins had forgotten I was married when they put me in their wedding program! Ugh I had a FB friend like that. Her hubby was in the Army with my hubby and she'd post stuff like "My hubby would give his life for his country, imagine what he'd do for me"....BARF. I only had her as a friend so I could creep when I was bored or be up to date on some of their training back when we weren't allowed phone calls. Luckily she defriended me after she made a post about how it was ridiculous that Costco had to apologize for putting a fiction sticker on the Bible. Apparently she took it offensively when I commented that I felt like if Christians had to apologize for "bashing" non-Christians, then non-Christians should have to apologize for "bashing" Christians. |

I have some very sweet, super nice "in person, face-to-face" friends, who are guilty of doing some of the things I'm complaining about on social media. It doesn't mean I don't want to be friends with them, it just means I find some of their FB habits rather annoying. One of very best friends is a selfie fanatic!
The ones that really get on my last nerve day-in and day-out on FB and aren't really close friends of mine in real life, are removed. But they're removed because I've been reading/seeing all of the garbage they post all the time and I'm finally sick of it. |

Those who are my friends of family I either text, call, or email on a regular basis and send pictures, etc. We all keep up with each other that way. Facebook is just too public for me regardless. I think it's too easy for innocent relationships between men and women to turn into something they shouldn't, and I just think it is a place to live a fictional life for some. I know there are many who use it as intended, and for that I think it is great, but on the flip side it has also caused alot of heartache, divorces, hurt feelings, jealousy, etc, none of which I want to be a part of. |

The guys sister was even like I dont think you should be putting your dirty laundry on facebook, what happens if yall get back together? And of course she was like no he is a lying piece of !!!. The next week they were engaged and she was talking about how she gets her happy ending now. P.S The ring was hideous |

And i honestly don't think there is a picture on her whole page where she is with someone else!! I'm thinking of unfriending her for no other reason I'm tired of looking at her every time I get on FB!! Lol!!
