| Just wondering what helps with your horses wind puffs?? Ive never had to deal with them before.
Ice boots, poultices, savs, gels, anything!?
My mare has them on her hind fetlocks.
Asked for the Ice Vibe boots for Christmas/ Ill be buying them in the spring otherwise.
Right now shes in the snow, and has til January off, but I want to be doing everything I can to make her comfortable when I am running her!
Any suggestions on these things?!
Thanks! | |

| Wind puffs are a symptom of inflammation of the joint. Get your horse on injectable ha, adequin, and glucosamine.
Also ice after a run is a good idea, poulticing over night is also good. I also use bot quick wraps when failing and overnight.
I also put my horses on a joint supplement oral but have better results giving glucosamine Im every 5 days

| Ill take her to Briggs in the spring then for some injections!
I am looking into Equidite ECJR for joint maintenance, really excited to see how it works for my mare.
What were you using for an oral supp?
Any other supplements you have used for joints etc that you find helped?

| I would caution on Briggs as I believe he is still is injecting steroids into the joint. Certain steroids can break down the cartilage faster. He is also a vet who is injection happy, he will inject without doing X-rays.
Not all horses with wind puffs need IA injections.
I have been using tight joint plus, but I have also been injecting with glucosamine, as I find this works the best.
Seen you say hind fetlocks, are you sure it is not the blood vessel. I had one I swore up and down he had windpuffs, vet said it was just his blood vessel.

| How would I be able to tell if its the blood vessel or a wind puff?
When I feel it, it feels like fluid, and it is both of them, and there is some heat there usually, more if we run.. Will blood vessels have the same effect?
Who would you suggest in our area then? I was going to take her in for hock injections there in the spring time anyway, as I usually do. (Im east of Edmonton)
Woudl wind puffs vs blood vessel show up on x-ray?
When I got her in the fall, he x-rayed her front fetlocks as he felt there was a .5 grade lameness with the flex test, and he said she would be fine, just some injections in the spring, but didnt say anything about her hind fetlocks..
Ill also have to find out what hes using to inject with!

Location: Somewhere between S@% stirrer and Saint | There is a big blood vessel in the windpuff area. First time I injected a wind puff I hit the vessel so you can feel it with your hand. wind puff will be big around than a swollen vessel.

I had my vet tell me they were blood vessels, in my experience windpuffs haven't felt hot.
Blood vessel will not reduce in size if you give antiinflammatories, such as bute or banamine. You could try buting your horse for a week, if they are windpuffs they will reduce in size, if they are blood vessels they will stay the same size.
For vets in the area, I am central and I drive 4 hours to see mine. A lot of people are liking chad Hewlett, delaney at delaney vet. I have had horses assessed and injected by Rick at red deer, think it is called Alberta veterinary services.
I would suggest X-rays before injecting
