Location: CA | I need help.... I need a sane horse to start for barrels. I don't want one going, I love patterning a nice broke horse. I have no idea how to pick horses, I buy them for their names, and sometimes breeding, but sometimes it doesn't work well for me. My old guy is 21 still running but is usually 4d. My mare is 16 and every 3rd run she does good. She is really race bred, but her name is Wizards Wonder, that is why I bought her. lol So if you have time will you look at this ad and tell me what you think of him. | For $3,800 you could get a very nice bred prospect that's been started under saddle and just needs to be finished. If you don't want that route and want something " fancy" broke go buy a reiner or a cutter that just didn't make the cut. They are going to be a lot more broke and have much more speed than one that was originally bred to push peanuts. |

| I have to agree.. I just bought a really REALLY broke 2 yr old.. kinda started on cattle (more as a turn back horse) Colonel Freckles on top Rocket Wrangler on bottom... It wouldnt take 30 minutes to get him loping thru the pattern!! And he was way less money! There are cutters and running horses out there that dont make the grade and they can sell cheap enough if needed you would still have money left over to send off for 30-60 days. Good luck in your search.. its depressing sometimes.
eta: To energetic for pleasure doesnt mean he's got enough of a gas pedel to run barrles.

Location: Texas | Watched the video about halfway through. I'm not a fan of the way he moves. And he's eight and they have a martingale on him? That's a red flag for me.
For that kind of money, you can buy a nicely started 3 year old that's bred to do what you want to do. It won't be a son/daughter of dash ta fame, but you can find some run x cow crosses for cheaper than what it would cost you to breed one. |

Seriously? The ad specifically says they are selling him due to the owner's health problems. Can't they remember why? I think you should keep looking. |

I only go through 3 mins of the video so am only basing my opinion on that. I don't see the martingale as a red flag purely for the reason that he never once tried to lift his head and brace, he doesn't look bracey through the front end. I see lots of people put gear on their horses for 'just in case'.
The gelding - he has a good handle on him. You would be able to get on and really start training on the pattern. He knows how to move all parts of his body. He seems like he has a great nature. The lady riding him is pretty much letting him do whatever and only bumps his face here and there. This is also something against him too. She is not really putting him under any pressure, hardly any use of her legs and feet except on the trail course and even then it is to push a body part not ask for true collection. How he reascts to being actually pushed to do something I would like to see. I also would love to see him drive up from behaind and really push himself, this is not his fault, he is not being asked for true collection.
Overall, I actually like him. Do I think he would make a barrel horse? I am not sure. I do think potentially he could be a lot of fun. US and Australian prices can differ but based on his history as a trail horse, a bunch of training and what looks like a lovely nature, he would sell every day of the week for that price here. Plus he is a nice horse to look at. |

Yes the ad does say they are selling for health issues, and I do see that as the common reason people put on ads. I talked to them more and they are WP people and he isn't a WP horse. I wouldn't offer full price as it appears they are trying to get their training costs out of him. sometimes you can, sometimes you can't. We have the Red Bluff Gelding sale coming up in a couple of months, and if I can't get a nice horse before then, that is where I will head. I suck at picking horses and at my age I don't have time to buy and sale till I find one I like.
If this post is against the rules I do apologize. I was just looking for some help.

How do you find a Reiner or cutter that doesn't make the cut? |

Location: Oklahoma | My 2 cents would be to look in Idaho for a Race Bred... Nor Cal isnt very far from Idaho & theyre turnin out some NICE horses!!! Been a few of em where Ive went dayum I wish I lived a little closer LoL My other thought would be to find the lady that owns SI Dude... Nice lookin horses & kinda close I think she has a 530 area code :) Hope this helps |

I recently bought one ..... he had almost 2yrs of reining training at 2 and 3 prepping him for the NRHA futurity, then the trainer decided he wasn't going to make pro level and he has been sitting around being a pet for the past 4 years. No big deal to me, I wanted a reiner and I'm not a pro level rider in the reining world, I'm a beginner at it, and he will shine in our local circuit. They aren't cheap though if they have had any serious traning, it takes several months to know whether they will make it or not. I found mine off of craigslist, although I visited reiners world several times a week while I was looking, |

I agree with this. This horse appears quite broke -- and his rider is using NO leg so he is not even collected in this video. The martingale is a non-issue for me, too. When he tossed his head it was due to his rider pulling on his head, not using her leg and being very unclear about what she wanted him to do. He is a cute pony. |

| JMHO but his feet are hitting the ground too fast to make it as a serious WP horse. He doesn't have those slow, soft legs/feet that they look for now.
I liked the way he traveled underneath himself from behind, He has a lot of reach with the inside hind on the rail.
He isn't something I personally would pick for a barrel prospect.But I see a lot of good things about him too.
If you want a 3D horse, then consider him. If you are looking for a 1D horse I'd pass. If you want something to mess around on and possible do some open horse shows along with barrels, he'd probably do very well.

| I agree with SKM. He looks like a nice broke horse that would make a bang up open show or 4-H horse. His jog is cute, his lope appears to not be finished. I think your money would be better spent elsewhere if you are wanting to soley barrel race. Like someone else said, just because he isn't (at least at this point) slow legged enough to cut it in the serious WP pen, is still a FARRRRRRRRR cry from being a running horse! Far Cry. |
