| Hello everyone,
Hope you are having an awesome Holiday season so far. I have a question, I'm thinking about relocating from California to Texas, more specifically Hankamer TX which is about an hour and a half outside of Houston. My question is, does anyone know how the barrel racing is around that particular town? I am basically moving there because I want to go pro (as I'm sure lots of us do) and California's economy is making that very difficult for me :( . Any advice or input is greatly appreciated.

| Move closer to Ft Worth. Or to the east side of dallas. The Terrell/canton area is great. Lots of barrel races. |

| I live in that area and not alot of local barrel races or rodeos in this area. You can look up schedules for NBHA 26, Barrel Racing USA and Gulf Coast Barrel Racing Association for this area. Your best bet for a lot of barrel races is Central Texas area around Ft. Worth/Weatherford area. |

Location: North Dakota | It depends on what you do for a living. I would suggest getting a job lined up before you move. The job market is really bad now and it can take up to a year or more to line up a job. I would suggest checking out a few areas to make sure you like it before you dive in. Texas is very different compared to California!. I live in Dallas and really like it better compared to the Houston area. Lots of small towns around the Dallas area or within a reasonable drive! |

I guess I am going to be the odd ball out on this comment. I live in the Tyler area and I know of a LOT of jobs hiring right now. And I am not talking just McDonald's or wal-mart either.
I am also a born and raised Californian and as long as she isn't coming from San Francisco it isn't too far off or different. I can't even tell you how many times people thought there would be some sticker shock that we would go through but we never did. We fit right into everything.
My good friend literally just moved this weekend from the East Bay in California and has been coming out here for about a year now for work and she says the same thing. If anything it is like breathing a breathe of fresh air and fitting into a pair of comfy shoes.
I will agree about the area you are choosing though. If you can at all choose a different area, I definitely would. |

Location: Texas | Texas is definaty where it's at for barrel racing and rodeos, but you really need to be closer to the Dallas/fort worth area. I don't the the area you asked about is a barrel racing hot spot lol. As far as jobs go. I guess it dePends on what you do as to how hard it is goin to be to find a job |

Location: southeast Texas | Why Hankamer??? Cut little town, close to interstate. But if you are wanting to rodeo/barrel race pro, you will be hauling a lot further....

Location: Tx | I would go with somewhere around the Weatherford area if I could. Near Dallas/Ft Worth as well as Stephenville.

Location: Texas | Not sure why you have selected that town, unless it is because of a job. Your best bet is to go somewhere more centrally located, like DFW or Stephenville. There is a reason Stephenville is known as the Cowboy Capital of the World. That is based upon the number of PRCA members, more specifically the NFR qualifiers, who call this area home. There are more NFR qualifiers who live here than anywhere else...if that tells you anything. |

| Wow thanks everyone for the feed back. The only reason I picked that particular area is that my sister currently lives there now. She is not into barrel racing at all but, she would be helping me out getting on my feet, that kind of thing. I am super nervous and nothing is in stone yet, as I have some things to wrap up here on the west coast but thank you for giving me a lot to think about. :) Really appreciate it!!!! |

Location: Bastrop, TX | Not sure what you do as far as work or career but just down the road from there is Mont Belvieu and there is a huge 2 yr project (job) starting there at one of the refineries in January. Lots of jobs will be available. |

Yep, I'm in Baytown which is right next to Mont Belvieu. Growing area that is right in the middle of the gas/oil heart. Hankamer is probably less than a 30 minute commute. Probably the best place in the country to find work right now. |

where are you in CA? Where I am (San Diego area) has hella lotta races EVERY WEEKEND. There are several rodeos that are pretty popular here and in the 2-3 hour hauling range that are decent. Not to mention we have a lot of old-timers to learn a lot from, here, too. (Or at least I have.) But...the economy does still suck here. |

everyone that I know that has moved to TX to rodeo/barrel race have all gone to DFW/Stephenville area, to give you an idea. |

Since you are coming to Texas to get back on your feet .... horses and barrel racing also costs money to own and do in Texas.
If you are not into nursing yet .... get in gear and get you an RN degree as quick as you can while your sister is willing to help you out. I mean dive into it and go fall, spring, summer and maybe a part time job at a local hospital etc .... get it done in 3 years or less by being focused and determined ......... and then get back into horses and help your sister recover from your stay ...
The city you have chosen ... you can drive 6-10-12 hours and still be in Texas ... lol
As an RN you can choose where you want to live and find a job almost anywhere ... and afford your horses and barrel racing agenda ..
Barrel races are plentiful in this half circle area using Dallas and Ft Worth as a Northern boundary ..... draw you a line from TYLER to CORSICANA to WACO ... they are about 70 miles from each other ... now from WACO to STEPHENVILLE which is about 90 miles ... inside and outside this line are tons of barrel racing ....
Research your barrel associations and rodeo's within 60 miles around these 4 cities and find what you like and then go RN job hunting in the area you choose ....

Location: Central TX | I live in outside of Temple TX and their is a lot here for barrel races. pretty much a jp everyday of the week and im within a couple of hours to all of the TX circuit PRCA rodeos...But if your wanting to go to the NFR, i would probably move to OK. I lived in OK for a few years and its generally a closer drive to everything when the rodeos leave tx. Closer to SD, MT, where the 4th of julys are and closer to the central states...kansas, colorado, lot of rodeo up that way. I like OK. |
