Location: Texas | Anyone have one? We got one for my son this year and he loves it! I thought with him being 9 it wouldn't be that big of a hit, but that is all he talked about all day. At 7:30 he asked if he could go to bed early so he didn't have to wait any more to see where the elf would be hiding in the morning. lol

Location: Windoming | One of my friends does that with her girls. They love it, but a neighbor girl told them the other day that you could buy the elf in stores....................................She even brought him to the office where the girls "discovered" him. Thinking about getting one when my grandkids get here at Christmas.

Well she could tell them that the naughty kids have to get theirs from the stores, Santa only sends them special delivery to the "nice" kids lol.
"Elfis" (my son is so origional with names lol) brought my son a note last night and asked him if he could talk with our black puppy (Doberman that often steals and shreds my son's stuffed animals) because she had been looking at him funny all day. He thought that was so funny but then the poor dog got read the right act and put in her kennel and he asked me to watch her really close while he was at school. She even got the whole "look at me when I am talking to you, this is serious.". |

They are Santa's helpers and every night they report back to Santa on how the kid did that day, when they come back they hide in a new spot. Some people just move them around, some of them do naughty things like toilet paper the bathroom, some bring treats (toothbrush, candy, pencils). If kids touch them they may lose their magic and won't be able to report back to Santa. It comes with a book you read to your kids and it just about answers all of their questions about them. Some things you just have to make up as you go... like apparently our elf has a mini laptop he writes notes on lol. I didn't want the note to be my handwriting cause my kid would have picked that up immediately, so I typed it. Now my kid wants a mini laptop.
It is just really which way you want to go with it. |

I was worried the first night because my son was not happy that the elf might be in his room at night while he is sleeping. It only took one note about how they were friends etc and a few jokes to make him laugh and now my son thinks he is the best thing ever. He has talked to the elf and written him a few letters asking about how Santa was, how are things going at the North Pole etc just today. |

I am having a blast with it, and hubby is just as excited in the mornings as my son is. He doesn't fake being surprised easy so I have to keep him out of the loop so he doesn't ruin it lol.
I am having a blast with it. In the morning Elfis will be fishing in the fish tank, with a little fishing pole. |

Location: Oklahoma | Rudy has been our daughter's elf for the last 3 years. He comes the day after Thanksgiving and leaves Christmas eve. We do not allow her to touch him because he'll lose his magic. It is a great thing and keeps her on her toes. She gets up right away to look for him. Every Christmas eve Rudy gives her a letter giving her permission from Santa to hold him without him losing his magic. That is the best part... |

Location: Texas | We have THREE of them (you're supposed to have one per family but my stepson's gma bought him one so of course we had to get my 2 kids their own...). They're a pain but the kids LOVE them. This is our 3rd year and we made the mistake (well, my husband) of busting out the elf too early last year. OMG. Thinking of stuff was a nightmare by the 25-30th night!
Our elves don't do anything "bad" or messy -- like my kids need that kind of example.
This was the favorite from last year. One morning the elves brough magic seeds (multi-colored tic-tacs) with a note to "plant" them in the Christmas mug before they went to bed that night and the next morning, they "grew" into multi-colored candy canes.

Oh that is cute!
Our elf is more of a prankster... My son wants to play pranks and tell jokes all the time so the elf is pretty much like him. |

Location: Argyle, NY | We have one - my kids are 5 and 6 and LOVE it!! The only drawback is mom is up extra early every day - they don't sleep in at all! BUT no problem to get up on school days :) Last night, he took all of their boots and shoes and the stuffed animals got in them and made a train through the house! I post pictures every day on my facebook of Buster's adventures - our adult friends/family love to see what he's up to! |

Location: Texas | This is my first year with my son, who's 4. Last year, he didn't grasp Santa until after Christmas morning. But this year, he was ready for an elf.
His favorite thing each morning is to find "Skippy." Our elf doesn't get into mischief. I have a son who doesn't need help in that area.
So far, Skippy has collected the candy canes off the tree, roped the metal reindeer, and hidden on a shelf. This morning, Skippy was using my son's toothbrush to brush his teeth.
I did have to lie about one night already. My son went to bed and I moved Skippy to where he was hiding in the blinds. My son got up before I went to bed and saw Skippy. I had to lie and say Skippy was flying to see Santa, but had to stop when my son walked in the living room because he can't see Skippy fly.
It definitely keeps my son on good behavior and I think it adds more magic to Christmas for him.

Location: Missouri | My kids are teenagers, but last year we started doing our own version of the Elf on a Shelf. I got a small stuffed elf at the Dollar Tree (yes, I'm cheap). All our elf does is hide after they go to bed along with a piece of candy (I get the gold wrapped chocolate coins, also at Dollar Tree). After they BOTH get ready in the morning, they hunt him down before school. They are too old for the story, and I'm too lazy for the fun pranks, etc (altho it's a fun idea!), but they actually seem to enjoy finding him. And they remarkably wait for the other to get ready before the elf hunt begins! The trick is to hide him high enough the houlas can't reach him - usually we give them stuffed toys to shred/play with, and they get extremely excited when the elf comes out. |

| I am doing elf on the shelf for our boys this year... problem i am finding because i want to do pranks... we have a puppy and the kids play all over the house...i really like the idea of making a train w/ their boots and stuffed animals but how in the heck does that work if you can't touch the elf... i would need to pick it up so the dog doesn't get it!!! or if they are using the kids toothbrush, the kid can't brush their teeth since the elf can't be touched!! how does that work?!?! this is my first year so i appreciate the help! |

Location: North Central South Dakota, west of the Might Mo | Thank you for this post! I hear all about the Elf on the Shelf and didn't know what it was about. Is 2 years old too young to start? Of course I don't think our little girl has a clue about Santa or getting gifts, so it probably is too soon?
Thank you! Sounds like a ton of fun!
Maybe I should get one for my husband, and it would keep him out of trouble ;-)
Merry Christmas,
