In search of hay and found some 2 year old hay they are selling for $55 a round bale. This years hay is anywhere from $75-$100 for same meadow grass. Do you think the 2 year old hay would be worth it? I figured separate the easy keepers and supplement with alfalfa for the hard keepers and growing colts.

We bought this years hay at $35 a bale/net wrapped... Everyone has more than enough here and I'm sure there's plenty to be bought. How much do you need?

Thats what we are feeding. It was hay that was put up here on the ranch and once I peel off the sun burnt outside, the inside is green and dust free. I think as long as it is free of mold and dust you are ok. The hay we bought goes to the cows. We have had a nasty drought here for a few years and haven't put up our own hay in awhile as it is flood irrigated to make it grow.
I think the older it is the more nutrients it looses, but I have them all on free choice mineral/salt and they are getting grain (2yr old, 3 weanlings, antique horse).
edited because I was holding a crying baby. Sounded like I had been drinking.

I'm in MN. I'll need around 20 I think till they can be put back on pasture. There are people buying down there and hauling up but it ends up being the same prices. I heard about a load coming up from MO selling at $60 for alfalfa mix but haven't heard back yet.
I can afford to pay for hay monthly. I just can't buy in bulk all at once.....it's frustrating.
