...still hurts. Dad & I decided to put down two horses this weekend - one of mine & one of his. Multiple reasons for both, all logical & practical. We had been keeping them on for emotional reasons & with winter coming on it was the best thing to do.

Luckily, despite all of our head-butting, my dad is pretty awesome & agreed to do it while I was gone for the weekend. I wouldn't be able to handle it if I was there. I told my mare goodbye & loved on her last night before I left. I have a deep feeling of guilt even though I know that it's best for her & for me both.

*sigh*

It's never easy. Try to find peace knowing you are doing the best thing for them.

I feel for you girl, I've had to put several animals down and for about a week I always wonder did I do the right thing, and I have to deal with the guilt, then I just wake up and realize that I truly did do the correct thing!

Agreed. I have had to put down 2 in the last 2 years. Just before winter. I always wondered if I made the right decision and I asked them! They were both actually excited to go. Im the opposite in that I called in sick to work SO I COULD BE THERE. I was there in the beginning and right by their side at the end for both. It will get better!

It is a hard decision. We had an old, and I mean old, draft mare that I had put down last fall. It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. It finally came down to realizing that I was more afraid of finding her dead and worrying that she had suffered. I know it's hard, but you did the right thing. The guilt gets better with time...

I know it's hard to deal with, I would be there too. You just have to believe that they are in a better place, with no pain and suffering. Also, you know they went peacefully and easily. I have never dealt with this, but I know I will have to some day. I don't know if I could be there for it either. I would be a nervous wreck for days, possibly weeks. Stay strong, will say a few prayers for you!

We took care of two that were pretty special a couple months ago.  I am glad they did not have to endure the cold, ice, snow and freezing rain we've had lately.  They are in a better place.  I was upset that I didn't make it home from work before one of them was gone.  I don't like leaving things like that in other's hands.

My sincere sympathy. I, too, could not be at home when they put down my old horse. I had given him a bath and said good-bye and left for TX. Hugs......

This is ironic for me that this was posted today. I am looking at putting my not even a year old filly down Monday. I am absolutely sick about it, but she has a bone cyst/defect in her shoulder joint and is not getting around very well now. The worst part is she physically looks great and stands at the pasture gate and whinny's at me every day. Definitely doesn't make it any easier. But, there is absolutely nothing that can be done for her. It's not even a question of options for her but not having the money. There's just nothing to be done, so I guess I'll be an adult and end her suffering. Her life from birth has been nothing but pain, but she is now dragging that front leg and not leaving weight on it. Sorry for the book, but just letting you know you are not alone in this tough decision! I will be praying for your peace as well.

it's better to do it early rather than late. Last spring my old heeler was getting really bad and we kept talking about it, but he always came around when summer came. He just kept getting worse though. He finally had a stroke in the morning before I went to work so I called from work and made an appt to have him put down. He was unable to move at the time. My husband called and said to get it earlier as he was getting worse in just a couple hours...called 10 minutes later and said to cancel the appt, the pup had passed away on his own. I am thankful the old boy died on his own and I didn't have to make the decision...but then again I know he suffered in his final hours. It is nature, but sometimes it is kinder to step in and do it for them.

So sorry to all that have had to put their critters down, it's a tough call
