Thinking about work ethics and realistic expectations for getting sponsors.....  I'm curious how NFR contestants over the years have come up with the money to stay on the road to qualify for the NFR. How did they do it?

I know there have been many that worked at regular jobs while running to help fund their way. I know there are many that train and that are running client's horses so the client contributes to pay expenses.

What about others that don't fall into either of those categories? How did they make it?

I'm curious too as far as realistic expectations to getting sponsors. Let's say you've won a few races here and there. Is it realistic to expect to get enough sponsor money to cover all your expenses instead of working a job and footing the bill yourself?

I don't have an answer, but I would sure like the answer to those questions. I also asked on another post what exactly do the sponsors contribute? I figure they probably give the racers their product for free. If they give cash, what are we talking about?? a thousand? ten? more? I know if that much, it would help immensely.
You left one off the list of "how they do it".....sugar daddy.

Day work, credit cards, friends who have paid entires.  Begged rides from others.  Work a regular job, drive all weekend, show up for work Monday and put in your time.  Rinse and repeat as necessary.

No a sponsor is NOT going to pay for you to go play!   A sponsor is paying for advertising.  The better you do and IF you actually are a good rep for their product they may step it up.   It is more about what YOU can do for the sponsor.  Once you get to the NFR caliber it is obviously easier.  But by that level most have some type of relationship already built.

Winning "a few races here and there" MAY get you some free feed (2/6 bags) or some boots,etc..  from a local company.

What can YOU do for a sponsor?  What can YOU do to help build their business?

My husband used to shoe horses at the rodeos. Worked out really good...for both of us.
