Well, I guess he isn't a pup. My sister does a rescue and goes to the pound and brings a couple home every now and then to help find them homes and well, how I could I not come home with a new pooch?!

He's a 7(around about) shih zhu(sp?) that is the sweetest dog in the world! Follows me everywhere...I think he may be my new barrel race dog to take along with me. Just thought I would share my new sweet guy!

First things first for sure is groomer and vet trip on Monday!!

lexyy12 - 2013-12-07 6:50 PM All I know is, whether he lives 5 more years or 2 months....at least he knows he was loved at least once in his life! He's 7 but at least I can skip the puppy stage! He won't eat table food, doesn't jump on the furniture(he waits for you to tell him to get up there), follows me everywhere, is house trained, doesn't bark, is good with kids and other pets. That place is so sad and my heart hurts for every single animal in places like this but I feel a little better knowing I was able to help one. He sure is grateful, I can already tell.

When I run across very old seniors in the shelter when we do pulls I usually try and bring them home.
The last one was so old and ill and in pain I brought her home for one night and she had to be put down the within 24 hours but she got to pass knowing she had a warm sofa and she wasn't alone anymore .

lexyy12 - 2013-12-09 10:26 AM So last night I noticed him licking his paw A LOT! So I started to look and he has a nail that overgrew so much that it came back around and went up inside of his foot!! First thing this morning I called the vet and got him in for a check up and to get his foot taken care of. It was way up there!! I am so surprised he wasn't in more pain! They also did heart worm test and he tested NEGATIVE! Which is awesome! About vaccinations...do they require you to do them? They asked about it today but I didn't have much time before work and I told them not today. Is it like a horse you can decide whether to do it or not? Also, they checked his teeth. He has lost one in the front and another is loose! They said he doesn't have very good teeth and want to extract them....ALL BUT 4! They said it would cost around $1200. Is that a good idea?! Is there anything I can do to help his teeth? This sweet guy won over everyone's heart today at the vets office and was definitely a trooper!

In order to obtain a license you must have a current Rabies vaccination & certificate .

Do they enforce this? Not really . If your dog got out and got picked up by animal control they may ask for proof but they don't go around approaching you here asking for proof of license.

I personally refuse to license my dogs with the constant uncertainty on pit bulls and breed specific legislation.

With the city bans, the way they knew people had pit bulls were based on licensing and that is how they showed up at peoples houses and took all their dogs. I like to maintain a window of time to pack up my house and leave in the event that a city ban happened . 



As far as vaccinating goes, I take as much of a holistic approach with them as I can  , I don't vaccinate my dogs anymore. I build a healthy immune system from the inside out with proper nutrition and excercise .



If you ever plan on boarding your dog they will require a current Rabies , Bordatella (every 6 months) , and Distemper/Parvo vaccination but even that can be done the day before if you find yourself in that situation. 

Distemper and parvo are usually more susceptable with young puppies or older dogs with compromised immune systems. It is very rare for a healthy , active adult dog to come down with the two , even with exposure so I don't see any point in vaccinating for it. Distemper is generally passed through saliva , blood or urine from dog to dog and it is a direct transfer. Parvo is passed through feces typically and can remain active for months on objects that came in contact with an infected dogs feces but a healthy immune system should not pick it up.

MS2011 - 2013-12-09 10:02 AM I would get a second opinion on his teeth.  Sometimes small animal vets seem to want to go overboard.



I had 2 of them want to do surgery on my dog's leg, something about a loose ligament when she was about a year old. Gave me awful diagnosis for her being able to run around.



She's now 10 and has never had any issues from it.

I've never heard of a shelter unless you rescue pull like me that adopts dogs out without vaccinating them.

Ohio state law requires current rabies vaccination before a license can be issued to any dog over 4 months of age so I'd ask for that certificate from your shelter. 

I would dig through your paperwork and see if they gave you vaccination records. If you don't have any I would call the shelter and ask for the records so you can have them on hand .

I would be calling them and telling them that you need vaccination records . If they give you a hassle I would remind them that they included licensing in his adoption and by law they would have had to have vaccinated him for rabies to do that. I deal with the backside of the shelter system , they are much more compliant after the pressure is on them to maintain legalities. 

F Bar - 2013-12-09 12:05 PM I agree. I have a chinese crested with very few teeth left but they are genetically prone to horrible dental issues.

Before extracting that many teeth I would absolutely get one more opinion. If they do determine it is needed for comfort , etc then it is easy to maintain a diet with minimal teeth , especially on a small breed. 

snazzy - 2013-12-09 4:54 AM Way to go he is cute......My husband and I went to the San Antonio shelter and rescued a dog last week.  They have over 400 dogs there and most only get about 5 days before they are PTS.  You name it they have it.  Very clean facility with 3 huge buildings full of dogs.  I have rescued before and those dogs just seem to be the most loving.......You can get a great dog without having to deal wiith puppy issues......Just thought Christmas was a nice time to do it again....

I saw on Facebook this morning that there were three labs (two look to be purebred chocolate lab, the black one looks older and not pure lab, although doesn't really matter to me).  Anyhow, three dogs, to be put down TODAY!!  I went over to San Antonio Animal Care Services and they are all saved, and off the kill list.  I am taking the chocolate female, and my friend Steve is taking the two males.  I am leaving work, right now actually, to go get them.  These dogs would be dead by now.  I have to bring them back next Tuesday to get sterilized.
