Location: MD | Okay y'all! Let's do this the right way. This might actually be beneficial to a few of us.
Starting at the top and working my way down the list, I'll give my observations, input, etc...
Sherry- Obviously, Sherry is always super correct. I'll bet we've all noted that she's having to be more aggressive and stay two handed longer than normal in order to keep Stingray square coming into the pockets. Boy, she sure is doing a great job!
Mary- It has seemed to me that while Mary has a wonderful style, the couple of barrels that have come down for her seem to have happened as a result of Mary trying to ride "away" from the barrel, rather than hustle through the turn and continuing to go passed them.
Michelle- Michelle, as a first time qualifier and on a horse who is relatively young and unseasoned made a very wise decision in the first go and made a super smooth, correct run that allowed both she and Slick a ton of confidence, which they have been building on run by run.
Kaley- I was a bit concerned after the First round for Kaley. Things seem to have righted themselves in the left turns however. The one thing that I'm concerned about is that lean at the 2nd barrel that she's been displaying this week. Thankfully, it hasn't caught with her.... yet.
Taylor- What a fun and exciting team this is! I think the couple of simple mistakes that caught her in the first two rounds can be attributed to "jitters" more than anything. She seems to be riding aggressively, sitting square and keeping her focus now.
Christy- I feel for Christy. I think we all expected Movin' to maybe take more of a shine to this pen than she has. Although, I'm not really sure why. I fell in love with this mare watching her dominate on BIG patterns and this is anything but. I feel like Christy has made some very wise decisions and is setting herself and Movin up for some great runs to be had in the T&M over the years to come.
Fallon- BabyFlo is a super tricky mare to run. She also doesn't have a whole lot of handle to work with. I'd love to see Fallon get two handed leaving the 2nd barrel and really drive for a spot deeper down the pen, like maybe the heeling box!
Sabrina- I feel like Sabrina has been dealing with it all rather well. If she could get a finish on the first barrel, thus a better approach/entry to the 2nd, she'd be super solid in the rounds.
Brittany- I was super glad to see Britt get on Teddy. I think from here on out, we'll see the sorts of runs that we did from this team last night.
Lisa- Louie seemed to me to be lacking his trademark fluidity through his body in the turns in the first couple of rounds. He seems to be softening up now. As always, Lisa has given him a great ride. This team almost always nail their patterns and I don't expect that to change anytime soon.
Sydni- I don't blame Syd for switching to Clancy, but I'd for sure like to see her get back on the mare. Not sure when, or why Clancy was switched to the left, but it appears to me as though he keeps wanting to fade back over to the left barrel after turning his second, which is really eroding his times.
Jane- I like the pairing of Jane and Blackie. They seem to have sorted out the resistance they were fighting at the third barrel in the first couple of rounds. I think they've been laying down consistent runs and foresee them doing well in the average.
Trula- I feel like Worm just keeps planting that inside hind harder and harder with each go. Trula's going to need to do some work at free-ing that sucker up if she plans to get back into the game.
Shada- Dial It seems to be finding his groove inside the T&M. Now that he knows where the first barrel is, I think we'll continue to see runs like they had last night. He's never been the most shapey, or round sort and his stiffer style might be causing him to bounce out of the ground a bit, thus slowing their times, but I applaud the steady progress that they have been making.
Jean- Zan is working well, but his straighter approach to the barrels makes maneuvering through the pattern at the T&M even more difficult. I think Jean has done a commendable job of trying to make the best of it. |

Do you think it's a bad habit she's picked up? Or more of a rider not doing EVERYTHING they can to keep her up (driving up, using two hands, using more leg, etc)? Do you think she would be having the same issue with a shanked bit?
These are questions I've been having about what's going on. I know she's switching to Nefertiti tonight.
BabyFlo is so much fun to watch too. I hate that she keeps having issues with that third. Her first barrel keeps getting better & better. |

I think BabyFlo is a very flat turner. The T&M is brutal on a horse with that style. I think that all of the inside leg and rein in the world isn't going to hold that mare off. Two hands and just try and make her smack into the back fence to free her up for a run. Sure, it won't get you a check, but it might tune her a bit for the next round. I'll be interested to see how Nefertiti handles that set up. |

I am just the opposite, I don't like the low camera angle at all- doesn't give you the overall perspective of the turn. |

I agree. She needs to concentrate on the back of the roping chutes and to ride ride and ride and not give in.
I do love the way she comes into her first! It makes my heart skip a beat every night...lol. She reminds me so much of the mare I run. |

Location: Kansas | Stingray is really hunting the barrels this week. Sherry is riding her butt off to stay clean. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but she hasn't been having to check Stingray heading to the first barrel.....that little mare is DIALED IN on the 1st barrel.
Christy & Movin are starting to find their groove I think. She was smart to start off somewhat conservatively and make a solid run the first night rather than swinging for the fences in round 1 and risking a confidence-wrecking run. Same type of thing with Shada and her horse....their first couple runs were not so good but the last couple nights they've located the 1st barrel and gotten on track.
Babyflo and Worm are getting settier and settier. Those girls are going to have to their work cut out for them staying clean but if they can get past the barrels they are probably going to win quite a bit of money because both horses are really firing.
I agree with you Andy about Sydni & her horse change. Not sure why but she & Clancy aren't really nailing the 1st barrel which is causing problems the rest of the way. If I were her and thought I could safely run Twisted Sister again, I'd be back on the mare at least a night or two. However, having ridden a horse with a serious gate issue, I won't second guess her decision too much. No one knows the horse better than the rider so I'm sure she has good reasons to be staying on Clancy and they'll get the 1st figured out soon.
I thought Brittany did a great job riding Tommy the 1st night, just some bad luck with trying to set the barrel up the next night. Can't say as I blame her for getting on Teddy though. They looked really good last night. She seems to be quite the jockey.
Hopefully Jean can get in the money....Zan looks like a neat horse - just super super solid - and she is riding him very well. It would make me very nervous to go to the NFR with only one horse so my fingers are crossed that nothing happens to him during the week. |

| I agree with what you said about Fallon. I think she needs to two hand her into 3rd. Her being one handed isn't enough. Baby Flo is not listening to her. I think having run there over and over, she's just anticipating too much.
I feel like Louie needs something between first and second. He just doesn't seem like he's firing there. He comes off of 3rd like a rocket, I'd like to see some more power there coming off of first. He's solid, don't get me wrong, just wondering if it's the repeats of the pen or what that he's not firing.
Would like to see Twisted Sister again.
Glad Brittany is doing better.
Want a whole stable full of Stingrays and Bos and Louies and Worms and Slicks! Ok, I doubt I'd turn any of them down....but those are my favs!

Did anyone else notice Twisted Sister in the alley I think it was Saturday night? They led her up saddled and bridled behind Clancy. So I'm not wondering if she had both horses ready and was going to attempt to run Sister again but she acted up so she jumped back on Clancy??? That was just an observation I had and was wondering if that was possibly what happened. |

I believe that during her initial training of babyflo is when Fallon had her near paralysis accident. I think she broke her neck about the same way as Christopher Reeve. I think she also suffered some facial trauma. Maybe 4 yrs ago? |

Did Latte get stuck in the dirt at the 3rd last night that threw Mary up on his neck? I couldn't tell what happened there when they tipped but that's what it looked like from the view I had? I think it was Christy that said the ground was a little sticky in spots so wondered if that's what happened.
It looked like he just flat cheated her. Did you notice she had two hands on the reins when he went to turn? Looks like she tried to ride him up in there farther and he just faded. |

I've seen still frames of Fallon's runs where she's knocked the third. Last night, she was holding her off with all of her might, & Flo still dropped that shoulder.
I am nowhere near as accomplished as Andy or have his eye, so take this with a grain of salt, but I have been thinking all week on how he explained it that Fallon doesn't have much of a handle to work with.
Fallon has mentioned over and over that BabyFlo is her prodigy, that within one year of breaking her she finished 16th in the world, now a year later she is at the NFR. She moved BabyFlo's training along at warp speed, and I see potential for holes in her fundamentals. Fallon may be holding her with all her might, picking her up, using leg, but BabyFlo just isn't as soft and responsive as others running in the T&M.
I believe that during her initial training of babyflo is when Fallon had her near paralysis accident. I think she broke her neck about the same way as Christopher Reeve. I think she also suffered some facial trauma. Maybe 4 yrs ago?
Fallon broke her neck in 09, and I agree that she's blessed to even be alive, much less competing at this level. She didn't start BabyFlo until 2011. http://lasvegasnfr.wordpress.com/2013/11/12/the-return-of-fallon-ta... |

I saw that too!! Wondered the same thing.
I've been slow mo'ing the runs and did anyone notice that ever so slight pull on the backside with Sherry Cervi and how quick her horse is to snap back? Talk about impeccable timing!!
Agreed, almost like Sherry has a magical rubber band that she pulls! Amazing!
I've wondered all week if Mary is feeling OK, just seems a little less "firery" (is that a word?? LOL) than last year.
Great post, thanks I love it when people that appear to be "in the know" come on and chat, or clear things up! |

Location: South Central Florida | Oh My Gosh, I LOVE THIS THREAD. Yes I noticed all that about Stingray. I do not know how Sherry got by the 1st on what I think was the 2nd night. Stingray lookedlike she set a step early and I have no idea how Sherry pushed her one more stride with her but in the ground. It was beautiful.
I also think Kaley and Cowboy are going to keep coming on. The first run did not even look like him, but gitters may have gotten to either one of them. He got hung up on the third, but he has looked like his normal self every run since.
So do the fop 4 ever start safety up? I know last year several hit barrels on the 8th and 9th runs.....UGH, I'm guessing you go with your game plan and make your run but love other opinions. |

Location: Kansas | I did notice Twisted Sister in the alley the one night - made me wonder if Sydni saddled both of them and planned on riding Twisted Sister if she was acting decent then stayed on Clancy when the mare wasn't behaving as well as she wanted. Or it could be just walking her through there another night to get her relaxed for later in the NFR. That mare can sure shut the clock off even with mistakes. I'd sure want to be able to run her more than just once out there IF I could do it without getting hurt or hurting someone else in the alley. |

Location: South Central Florida | WrapSnap - 2013-12-09 2:13 PM Okay y'all!
Holy Cow, I think I love you :) |

Location: North Dakota | I love watching Sherry and Stingray in her turns! If you watch her hands she is constantly asking for little moves and Stingray is always right on! It is like Sherry knows exactly where and when to ask for just maybe one more move, little push, step, etc. and Stingray is right on cue and doesn't argue. It is amazing how fast she can think and react to every little step Stingray takes and how sensitive Stingray is to those little cues. You can really tell she is working hard to keep all 3 up this year! |

This is where I felt like she kind of tried to "get by" rather than really drive from the backside of the 2nd all the way through the backside of the third. It's super easy to start "picking one off" and fumbling your hands a bit when they're cutting you off and that's exactly what I saw happen. She had 2 hands, he just dropped right out from under her and turned a stride too soon. |

The T&M seems like it is so tough to run in (just look at the alleyway system!) and the ground can be tough as well. Good thread, I think we can learn lots from watching them run :) |

| I've seen some "mistakes" if you wanna call them that throughout watching but I dont think I've seen them not come back the next round and correct them or attempt to. I think Babyflo's first tip was rider error but now its Babyflo but Fallon is making some adjustments to try and fix. Or Sherry riding 2 handed longer into her barrels that she did night one. Or the extra squeeze I can see Mary giving latte on the back side of second. I think its Ketcham who changed her approach to her first from night one to the following and has caught it much better.
I think these girls are fabulous and really know their stuff. I like that you can see those adjustments they make. Some very minor, some tack changes, some riding, some are a combination.
Keep it up ladies!! |

        Location: MD | Let's discuss Round 5!
Lisa- As I said previously, Louie seems to be loosening up through his body and finding that snappy turn that really allows him to shut off the clock! It sure worked tonight!
Mary- Mary rode with a purpose tonight. She stayed square all they way to the backsides. Watch as she ran to the third. There was no "fumbling" of reins, no intent to try and "hold him off". She rode that sucker just as straight and aggressively as you'd want her to. Watch as her knee comes level with the barrel and her inside shoulder is still riding for the back fence.
Sherry- Stingray had a phenomenal first barrel, yet again. We're seeing that outside rein coming into play more and more at the second barrel as the week goes on. Stingray is attentive to it at this point, but it is becoming a bit worrisome.
Christy- This was exactly what I was expecting after last night. Movin' stayed upright and ran all the way up into the hole at the third, exactly where Christy put her in Round 4.
Taylor- Bo is just so super solid. Taylor did a great job of using her seat on the backside of the 2nd to push Bo another step through the turn. Otherwise, he may well have come back over top of that barrel.
Shada- Another good first barrel for Dial It tonight. I feel like they've worked out the kinks and found their way around the T&M now. I think that stiffer style is telling on them a bit there at the third. Were it me, I'd have a set of draw reins on him in practice tomorrow and be softening him back up. I also think that it appears as though Shada is still running him in a set of Latricia's reins, or at least that length of rein and it's just not totally working for her.
Jean- Zan had a very nice run tonight. I'm pulling for this pair to find themselves at the pay window soon.
Kaley- Cowboy was solid, as always. That lean at the 2nd barrel found it's way on down the pen to the third tonight and it got very squeaky. Kaley is a phenomenal rider who has the ability to stay very square in the saddle. As easy as it is to get caught up in the excitement of a run and doing things out of the ordinary to "make it work" I hope to see her get back to the form that we all know her for.
Sydni- I was impressed with the progression of Clancy's run tonight. It was, by far his best first barrel yet. I think if Sydni could get him just a little deeper on the backside of the second, he'd be even more fluid there, but considering the difference from Round 4 to Round 5, that's just me being nit picky.
Brittany- Teddy looked good tonight. Brittany has obviously done a very nice job of seasoning this young mare. I just feel like Teddy isn't quite as strong as those big, powerful geldings that we are used to seeing Brittany on. In this short setup, where Teddy is already getting a little setty, she just can't pick Brittany's weight up and clock if Brittany gets to leading off and laying in over her inside shoulder.
Fallon- I'm not going to fault Nefertiti for not finding the first barrel. It's her first run in that pen and she sure hasn't been running nearly as much as BabyFlo this year. I will say that I feel as though Fallon's free wheeling style is not offering her horses the support that I feel they need in order to be at their best.
Michelle- I felt like Slick catching that first barrel was just unlucky. He got just a bit deep in the pocket and boy was he trying to make up for it.! I am never one to fault a horse for working too hard. Michelle has been giving him a great ride and so long as she doesn't allow this little bump in the road to rattle her, I think we'll see her continuing to pick up checks.
Sabrina- I actually felt like this was Sabrina's best first barrel of the week, although it was a little hard to see super well with the changing camera angle during her turn. The first few rounds, she came off of the first barrel much wider, which got her into the second pretty tight. Doing so forced Swivel to take his room on the backside of the 2nd. With the better finish tonight, I feel as though Sabrina just needs to set her sights a little deeper behind the barrels. He got a little short at the third, as well and stepped off a bit leaving as a result.
Trula- Worm just continues to get stickier. I just don't think attempting to hustle by is enough at this point. This is a great pair, very capable of clocking where they need to and leaving the barrels up. I sure hope she gets something worked out!
Jane- I'm not sure if Jane just felt that Blackie needed the night off, or if she wanted to get this horse in the pen, but I think they are two such vastly different horses that switching back and forth on them might be quite the feat, as was proven tonight. |

| I agree! Im really pulling for Jean, that team is working hard!! I expecteda better time out of Clancy... was thinking sub 14 but i think it's in the future, he's getting more confident. Louie is really gaining confidence and i think it's just the beginning! So great to see Christy in the top, she worked it out tonight! That Bo sure makes it look easy, i thought i saw more of a misstep off 1st but they both act like such seasoned competitors, no break in concentration. I am majorly bummed for Michele. That was a nice run!! Im cheering for her tomorrow, that was a bummer tip and again for Jean to make some money!
Eta is it me or does Fallon kick really far back? Not intent of rudeness, not sure if it's the short body of her horses or body position?

| I was SOO Excited to see Louie fire tonight! His whole exit from first was fabulous!
I was also happy to see Christy and Movin clock under 14. On FB her boy send her a message, "No more stupid 14s" Must have been her good luck charm! Happy they did well!
Sherry and Stingray gave my heart a little jump. I thought they were going to get a barrel!

No, he definitely stuck a toe on the backside, causing him to come back even harder. |

I've seen still frames of Fallon's runs where she's knocked the third. Last night, she was holding her off with all of her might, & Flo still dropped that shoulder.
In the run I saw Fallon make in 4th go, she rode one handed all the way to third, never released the horn after the second. A ratey horse will shoulder it every time when you do that.

| The one observation I have seen is the horses that are knocking have more of the tear drop turning style (like what Lisa Lockhart teaches) and the ones that are not knocking have the circle style (dena Kirkpatrick style). Has anyone else noticed this?
Also I noticed that majority if their hand position is in the upper half of the horses neck (what ed wright teaches) |

| bccanchaser16 - 2013-12-09 6:31 PM I want Louie. I had a gelding named Louie so I was a little partial to him when I saw Lisa ride him the first time and since then he's been my favorite because he runs the exact same pattern every time. He is the horse I want my mare to turn out like. Calm, listens to Lisa, and consistency.
I'm also a huge Christy fan and RUN MOVIN RUN!
Did ya'll know that Louie is a past snaffle bit futurity champion, as in working cow horse??? He's broke to death having been a cow horse competitor. You can see it in his willingness and consistency. One thing all the great horses have in common- they are BROKE! http://www.bbarheartperformancehorses.com/performers.htm |

ok im not bashing her, but FT was running her baby flo the same year she broke her, does that contribute to her showing at the finals. Yes she made it to the NFR but i dont think that she has the same foundation as a lot of the other horses do. |

With this I have to politely disagree, I ride a ratey horse and on certain runs, I defintely stay one handed, because when I go to two he shortens up more than when I stay one handed. I'm finding with these runs that most of the girls ride a lot the same, but it's their horses that are different. "It takes all kinds of kinds"
Was glad someone pointed out the hand position (Cheryl I think) I noticed that most everyone has their hands waaay forward on their horses necks, might be something I need to concentrate on! |

Of course we all have our own style and way of doing it but I believe a horse has to have a foundation of being really broke in the face, ribcage, etc, moving off leg, counter bending, before they ever see a barrel. Two hands on the reins and driving forward means no shutting out and shouldering. In round 3, Sherry popped Stingray's face witht the outside rein one time just as she approached the third. It was the perfect move to keep her up and moving forward an instant longer which kept her from shouldering the barrel at the approach. She can do that because Stingray is so broke and in tune to rider cues that Sherry can keep her honest. IMHO, I've never seen a one hand approach to the barrel keep the barrel up on one that wants to shut down and shoulder in, but I haven't ridden your horse!! |

Location: Haslet, Texas | WrapSnap - 2013-12-10 12:32 AM Let's discuss Round 5!
Totally on spot...the only thing I would add was the quickness in which Moven got away from the first barrel. I thought she was much quicker across the pen to the 2nd, when I saw her bullet out of the first I knew she was going to be fast. |

Location: Texas! | WrapSnap - 2013-12-09 12:13 PM Okay y'all!
THIS! I had this exact thought the other day but did not dare voice it on here since everyone was so touchy when I thought of it. |

Talk about trust. If you slow it down you can see it didn't phase her, the rein stayed pretty much in place, and she reached for it, missed and reached for it again up on his neck. HOLY COW, that was not only trust, but skill and confidence. This is a very exciting NFR!!! |

| Taylor has the possibilities of becoming the next Charmayne.. she has more talent and confidence .. not to mention being SUPER mounted.. and makes the most of it. LOVE watching her come up the alley and then make her run.. she is sure nuff a hand.and ranks right there with Sherry and Lisa .. wish them all luck because they have all worked hard but love raw talent in humans and horses. Impressed with Shada too.. not easy to be in the spotlight because of hubby and expections so high.. she is doing so good..

It seems like I've learned more too. One thing that really impressed me about Taylor and Bo is how she just eases him into the alley on a loose rein and he seems so relaxed and confident....no fighting, no rearing, no twirling around.....just a team getting ready to go to work. |

Talk about trust. If you slow it down you can see it didn't phase her, the rein stayed pretty much in place, and she reached for it, missed and reached for it again up on his neck. HOLY COW, that was not only trust, but skill and confidence. This is a very exciting NFR!!!
She talked about this at one of the buckle ceremonies. She said she does it everytime becuase she can't whip with her left. (I do this on my lefty too on the way home)
I also can't whip with my left hand and am frequently without reins as my lefty runs home. I love watching Taylor & Bo run......they have gotten things lined out after hitting barrels the first two nights and it is making every round must see TV. Even our county commissioners were asking me about the horse that broke the arena record today! |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | Maybe I'm wrong here, but after watching him a few times now, one thing that stands out compared to other real fast runners at the T&M is that he actually looks like he's not really that hard to ride. THEY make it look easy....like that's the way it's supposed to be. Now I know it has to be hard as heck to sit a horse with that kind of speed and agility, but because everything seems so correct, and efficient, it actually looks almost easy. No wasted motion, no flailing around trying to stay in the saddle, no fighting in the alley, no reining off, no acrobatics.....just a very smooth fun run the way it's supposed to be. |

Location: Bastrop, Texas | When you get to thinking about it, many times when someone makes really exceptionally fast runs, people are saying, "It didn't seem that fast...." but it was! A lot of the great ones are like that. The really good riders are the ones you hardly even notice during a run. They are sort of along for the ride, or like an extra hump on the horse's back. If you watch Lisa Lockhart and Louie, their runs are the same almost every time....it's almost boring, because it's always the same and always excellent.

Location: MD | Okay. So, I'm doing this on my little warm back up breaks throughout the day while watching particular horses in the Juvi, so I'll be doing this in order that they ran, instead of how they placed.
Fallon- Everyone keeps talking about Fallon putting the blinkers on BabyFlo. That may have been smart on Fallon's behalf and it may well have been largely beneficial. What I want to note about this run is that Fallon sat more squarely at both the 2nd and third barrels. Even moreso than that, for the first time, Fallon actually picked her outside rein up about 2 strides from the third barrel and lead off with it a bit, not enough to say that she reined off, but enough to make sure that she kept her moving forward a bit. This is the sort of run that we saw in the first round and then sort that I expected to see from this pair.
Christy- Movin' is really seeming to have settled into the confines of the T&M. Christy is doing a tremendous job of giving her a positive ride and placing her where she needs to be. Great ride at the 2nd barrel last night. She very softly picked that shoulder back up and squared her just enough to allow for a beautiful turn without getting in her way and impeding her forward momentum.
Michelle- I was very glad to see come in and ride the first barrel just as aggressively as she had all week. It can be hard to leave a downed barrel out of your mind, but she did a great job of it. I feel like Slick has been getting just a bit shorter going across the pen each night and last night, Michelle really lead him off with that outside rein. At the same time, she tipped her head and looked at the barrel ever so slightly. That was all the encouragement Slick needed. By having already tipped her weight to the inside, when Slick dove in, things got a little out of sorts. Michelle's ability to hustle up and get back centered was vital in this run. She got back in the middle and had a great third barrel. I have no doubt that they will get their issues sorted out and be back on track.
Mary- Mary is back to showing the form that made her such a dominant force last year. Latte was again, a bit short at the third. Had Mary not stayed so square and held her inside shoulder, that barrel would have been on the ground. Hopefully, she can convince him to stay running just one stride further down the pen tonight.
Sherry- As usual Sherry did a tremendous job of riding last night. Sherry got ahold of that outside rein even a bit sooner than she has in previous rounds at the second barrel. Having to pull Stingray a bit out of position is causing for that second barrel to not be quite as snappy as usual, which is causing for her to maybe not clock as well as she might. That being said, I expect that Sherry will continue to manage her runs for the next few nights and may well win not only the World, but the average, as well.
Trula- I was so glad to see Trula change something up and get back in the groove! I feel like the bit change allowed for her to handle Worm a whole lot more tonight. It also allowed Worm to run a bit more free. There will definitely be those who will crucify Trula for reining off and handling her horse so much, but the proof is in the pudding. After a few rough rounds, I certainly can't blame her for doing what she needed to in order to start leaving them up again. In situations such as this, you sometimes have to forego correctness. That's exactly what Trula did and I'm super glad to see it!
Sydni- I would love to see Sydni use her hand just a bit lower at the first barrel. Doing so would bring that outside rein into contact with his neck and would help stabilize his hip a bit. Clancy's hip swinging out as they exit the first is eroding their line to the 2nd. Getting that straighter exit would allow Sydni to puch him a stride deeper into that second barrel. As it is, I don't feel as though Clancy is shouldering, he's just not in position to turn where he needs to. I feel like so many "new" things are happening for this pair and the T&M is unforgiving enough as it is, but certainly a very tough venue in which to try new things. I hope they get them sorted out.
Shada- This team just needs to get that third barrel figured out. This was definitely a better third barrel than Round 5, but it still cost them a bunch. If the draw reins didn't come out in practice, they still should. If they have, I would sure love to see Shada kick in the afterburners and make that sucker RUN to the third. He may not turn it pretty, but right now, he's hanging up something bad. On another note, I wish the cameras had panned away from Trevor last night.
Jean- I would love to see Jean get Zan moved about 5 feet further to the right when running to the 2nd barrel. This pen just will not allow for one to run so straight to them and move at the last stride, or two. This duo has been so consistent, it's just that pesky approach that is causing that barrel to continue to come down.
Jane- I was very glad to see Jane back on Blackie tonight. Her first and second barrels have been so consistent on this horse this week. Jane went to the horn just a bit soon and Blackie responded. Jane lifted that inside rein to try and pick him back off, but it just tipped his nose and brought him in even tighter. Jane will ride much more aggressively to the third tonight, for sure.
Lisa- There's just not much to be said about this pair. Great turns, great riding, great responses from Louie, as always.
Taylor- Taylor does a tremendous job of riding a horse with a more stiff, rollback style. She makes it look so super effortless, even though if you truly watch her, she rides so aggressively with her seat and core, keeping Bo moving all the way through the turns, so that he doesn't snap back on top of the barrels. Tremendous run!
Kaley- Cowboy just never seems to falter. That lean of Kaley's gave me a good scare at the third tonight and it definitely hun Cowboy up a bit at the 2nd. I think we'll keep seeing runs like this all week.
Brittany- I was so super glad to see Brittany bust SuperFly out! He handled everything like a seasoned pro. Brittany rode him more squarely than anything she has sat on all week and boy, did this team work! I bet we see her stay on him for the rest of the NFR.
Sabrina- I really like this horse! Very nice style and seems to just really want to work. That run should give Sabrina some confidence to come back in on Uno and send her a whole lot harder. I feel like this team could do very well in the next few rounds.
This was such an exciting round, for more reasons than just Taylor's amazing run. So many fun changes were made in Round 6! Headache, or not, I'll be glued to a spot right in front of the TV to see how tonight unfolds!

Location: 31 lengths farms | I know you didn't ask me, but what I think I see with BabyFlo is that she runs a much different type pattern, she seems to me to almost cock her nose to the outside of the turn . If that is really what I'm seeing I would think you'd almost have to ride by on purpose a stride or so for the snap back that it creates when she comes around... |

Belinda Bell from Winnemucca, NV., is a well known western artist. They are Cruel Jeans and Belinda oil painted 10 pair for Fallon. Fallon was born in Fallon, NV.

I think that some of them are trying to push them and get the speed, without getting enough rate out of them at their first barrel. Just an observation, did anyone else notice this or just me; or am I just overthinking it lol? |

If you watch videos of Fallon on other horses, this is actually the sort of turn that she puts on all of them. BabyFlo's style just makes it a bit more pronounced. I don't actually know that there is anything to "fix" about it. It just seems to be Fallon's preferred way of running one. |

Having grown up riding free runners and having now acquired a bunch of really setty, push style, rollback turning horses, I very quickly learned to note and appreciate someone who can do it as well as Taylor does.
Edited because dadgum spellcheck always turns setty into settee. Nope, it's a horse who sits on it's hocks too darn soon, not a cute, diminutive piece of furniture! lol

BabyFlo was indeed voted the AQHA/WPRA Barrel Horse of the year. Stingray was voted the Horse with the most heart, I believe. |

Michelle- What a great run for Michelle and Slick! Michelle is on her mental game! She certainly didn't let the last couple of nights get to her. I felt like Michelle really stepped on the gas pedal and hustled Slick all the way through the turns tonight, rather than trying to lead him off with the outside rein so much. It definitely worked! Great, textbook, trademark run from this team.
Mary- Latte has such a fun style to watch. Mary pulled off a couple of very veteran moves in this run. In earlier rounds, she tried to hold Latte off a bit with her hands. Tonight, she hustled him into the turns quite aggressively. When that alone wasn't enough, Mary really stepped to the outside and held her line with her body, even when Latte was closing in fast. Not an easy feat in any situation, but especially not in this arena, where the turn is going to happen so fast. Very impressed with Mary tonight.
Sherry- Stingray is definitely tightening up even more as the days go on. Sherry did a phenomenal job, as always of holding it together. I just hope that she can continue to manage the fact that the mare is getting so short and make it through the next few rounds clean.
Trula- What a difference a bit change can make! Improving upon last night's run, I felt like both Trula and Worm have a fresh perspective. Trula is riding so much more aggressively than she was a couple of Rounds back and it sure is showing. Worm hung a foot for a step on the backside of the 2nd, but Trula just kept hustling on through. I'm excited for this team.
Sydni- I'm very proud of Sydni tonight. Sometimes, back to basics is the way to go. No matter if you're at the NFR, or not, when things need fixing, you need to see to it and I felt that she did just that. Clancy still got out of square leaving the first, but Sydni rode him two handed and kept him straight all the way up into the hole at the second. That allowed them to leave straighter and carry a better line to the third. I felt as though Sydni took a bit of a breath on the way to the third, as if to say "Whew, that worked". Couple that moment with her then looking down and in and the third barrel turn just started to happen a stride too soon. Hopefully, all the pieces fall into place for them tomorrow. Cleaning those things up in regards to the 2nd barrel certainly showed in her time tonight.
Shada- Shada definitely got a bit ahead of the motion at the first barrel tonight. Dial It's inside shoulder dropped a bit quickly and Shada got dashboarded. Dial It definitely help up a moment to allow her to get back in the middle, but all in all, it was a nice turn. This horse just never seems to miss a beat at the second barrel. This many rounds in, when so many horses are getting short, he just runs right to his spot and does his job wonderfully. I felt like they worked their third barrel kinks out tonight. I felt like Shada held onto him a bit leaving the third tonight. This could be partly because of him having not finished it in previous rounds. I also think that it could, in large part be because she has a bit too much rein. Either way, it cost her a bit. They may not be cashing much in the Rounds, but they are looking to stay solid in that average.
Jean- It was hard to tell whether it was Jean's leg, or Zan's hip that caught that post coming in, but I believe it was his hip. Hoping that all is well there. I was disappointed to see Jean get to the inside at the first tonight. It sure can be hard to stay square on one that drops in and turns like that. The happy moment during this run, for me was to see Jean adjust her line across to the second barrel. Instead of riding him straighter to it and then moving, she left the first headed to the 2nd barrel pocket and it worked. Very nice 2nd barrel for them tonight. Jean again got tipped to the inside at the third and bumped it coming in. I don't know if staying two handed one step longer would help to keep her a bit more square, but I sure might try it.
Jane- Blackie stayed a bit hung out in the bend leaving the first barrel tonight. He definitely lost some time running across there like that. As a result, Jane had to ride all the way passed the second barrel really leading with that outside rein, even more than her normal style. This caused for a little slower turn at the second, as he had to change his arc on the backside. After catching the third last night, Jane really hustled down there tonight. While I might still like to see even just a bit deeper a pocket, they had a very nice third turn.
Lisa- Louie got just a smidge tight coming into the first tonight. Lisa gave him just the slightest of lift on that inside rein and he squared back up beautifully. Great bit of riding and quick reflexes for Lisa. This pair just always make it look so easy. From there on out, it was a trademark run for a super consistent horse/rider combination. Has Louie won Horse of the Year honors yet? He should!
Taylor- Another great run from this team. The first barrel was improved from last night, with a great finish. A big, hard turning horse like this that wants to run in with no pocket can certainly make one wince a bit, as he has at the 2nd barrel the last two nights. It's just his way of working and I feel like Taylor does a great job of trusting him there. Bo's stiffer style may be catching up with him just a bit at this point. He nosed out just a bit more at the third tonight and tried to flatten a little coming into the turn. Taylor did a great job of dropping her shoulders back behind her and really pushing him forward with her seat and thigh to get him by the backside. Sure, he stepped off just a bit, but with any less of a ride from Taylor, that could have ended up being a very costly third barrel.
Kaley- I don't think Cowboy could turn a bad first barrel if he tried. Kaley got all the way into the pocket before she leaned at the second tonight and it allowed for Cowboy to start a much better turn. That lean appeared once again at the third barrel tonight. By leaning where she did, Kaley threw Cowboy's weight all onto that inside shoulder, which caused his hind end to pop out of the ground. That move caused Cowboy to really slide out through the turn. Throwing yourself up one's neck will get you by a barrel every now and again, but Taylor's way of doing it is sure more correct and effective.
Brittany- Superfly got in a bit running to the first and cut off the pocket a hair, causing them to have to get just a bit deep behind it tonight. Brittany got to the inside again on the backside of the second, which caused Fly to plant his front end and come a bit out of position. This put them on a "gappy" line to the third. Having too much room to the third definitely encouraged Fly to start the turn a bit too soon and Brittany laying in and leading off sealed the deal. Hopefully she'll stay more upright for him in future rounds. This is no doubt a great pair and I hope she stays on him and cleans those things up.
Sabrina- I was actually surprised to see Sabrina get back on Swivel tonight. I would love to see Sabrina ride a bit assertively at the first barrel. If she could just get Swivel to sit down and finish that first barrel, so many things could be different. Due to having blown so far off the backside of the first, she really needed to ride aggressively to get back in position for a good second barrel. I just feel like she didn't. I'm not sure if she was just exasperated after having blown off the first and hitting the second, but I felt like the ride ended there. The third was was it was and not much of an attempt was made to ensure that it went any differently.
Fallon- Fallon seems to have regained her momentum. Another nice first barrel from BabyFlo. I feel like Fallon is enjoying her new tricks maybe a little too much. That little bump she gave on her outside rein at the second barrel seemed to carry them by the backside a bit more than she intended. BabyFlo snapped back and stayed very balanced, however. Fallon made that same move with her outside rein at the third barrel again tonight and it worked just like she intended, for the second night in a row. I'm not sure that the blinkers are truly having an effect on BabyFlo, as she never got short going to the third before, it was once the turn was intiated that the problem arose. I give the credit for the last two nights' runs to the fact that Fallon is getting two handed and driving her up in there squarely. If it took slapping the blinkers on for Fallon to have that sort of confidence, so be it!
Christy- By the 7th Round, Movin' is getting a little hotter. She ran a bit stronger tonight and was definitely a bit strung out in the turns. Movin' ran herself off of her feet a little bit at the first barrel. That slip and lack of having her hind end really up underneath her not only caused the turn to be less accurate, but it also robbed them of her normal snap away from the barrel. While well positioned at the second barrel, I again felt as though Movin' ran through her rate point a bit tonight without really getting herself put together for the turn. Christy did an excellent job of setting her in Round 6 and a bit of that same ride might have been called for tonight. The mare's anxiety and fiery mood was evident as she shook her head a bit after leaving the 2nd. Christy did a great job of using her inside rein to set Movin' back over her hock and get her put together for a very nice third barrel tonight.

| I also felt that Sabrina really just stopped riding after the first, I mean I cant say I wouldnt do the same because you pretty much know your run is gonna be a struggle when you leave your first that way. Really hope she gets a mojo here before its all said in done.
I cant help but be curious if much would have changed with Brittany on Duke, although I do love seeing these newbies out there holding their own! I feel that Britt tends to lean a lot? Even from previous years Ive noticed that. Is that just kinda her style because obviously she makes it to the NFR but it seems to be the root of a lot of tips too??? (no snarkyness meant, just curious)
That Louie sure doesnt make many mistakes and I dont know why but I feel like he covers so much ground when headed home!!! So many great runs, I was so happy for Trula!!!! She worked it out tonight and worked hard for that run! So exciting to see some struggles get rewarded.
I think Latte is in for some fast paced runs, imagine if he had finished 3rd better... woofta!
Definetely some fast horses and some flawless patterns being run this year in the T&M. |

She did indeed! While you certainly might not expect to see one being ridden in a heavy ring snaffle, a set of rings and what for all intents and purposes could have been split reins at the NFR, Sydni took it back to basics and tried to clean up the things that she needed to. Nobody wants to have to school one at the NFR, but Clancy is a very nice horse and Sydni seems to be doing just what she needs to. She knows that this is but one rodeo and she is getting things right. He'll be back on top as soon as he gets back to setups that agree with him more, I'm sure. |

I'd read an article (and someone posted it on one of these threads) that she had broken her tailbone this year and had really bad nerve damage that was incredibly painful. I wonder if that's still bothering her. I'd love to see her get in the money before the week's over.
I was so rooting for Sherry to get in last night - she's made money in every round! Can someone clarify- I saw this on FB maybe, does she get a Ram truck if she does it in all 10 rounds?
And of course- props to Taylor & Bo! |

I have been wondering the same thing. She was off for a couple months and couldn't walk at one point! She had said when she got back riding she was still sore and it hurt but not to the point it had been hurting her. I would think it is still bothering her and maybe a reason she isn't running Twisted Sister again, because if she throws her back into the saddle that could cause her to re-hurt it. |

Top Gun award gets the truck and right now Taylor is leading it!
I haven't found any info on whether or not average money is included. http://prorodeo.com/topgun_standings.aspx |

That's what I questioned the other day too. I don't think it counts the average, just the go round money. |

Location: Heart of Texas | ~~Shada- Shada definitely got a bit ahead of the motion at the first barrel tonight.
I noticed in the first round that her reins seemed too long. Maybe that is how she feels comfortable, not sure. I like a short rein. Helps keep my hands down and a quicker reaction time, with less movement.

| WrapSnap - 2013-12-11 5:00 PM Shada- This team just needs to get that third barrel figured out.
I know that all the contestants are under pressure, but Shada has got to really be under some heavy pressure. No matter how supportive and non-judgemental Trevor is, to have a spouse that successful has to be hard to try to live up to. Very different also from being a competitor to a spectator/supporter of a competitor. |

From past years information, it is the most money won in a single event at the WNFR, so that would include average money. Mary won it last year with $146,941, that must have included the average money.

| The one thing I noticed was Brittany leaning at third. The announcers tried to blame it on the horse. The horse did what Brittany's body was telling it to do. Hopefully she'll get that fixed. I've never noticed her doing that so prominently before.
I just don't like the way Fallon has Flo turning. You could put a horse inbetween Flo and 2nd barrel. Maybe it's the horse, maybe it's a technique to keep her from knocking...IDK, but I feel like her times would be better if she'd tighten up a little bit. Her 3rd barrel is improving, but I think it's Fallon's head that likes the blinkers, not the horse. She seems to be riding harder and straighter for third. |

I just saw WPRA posted on FB that Taylor took the lead for that, earning $82,431.90 at the NFR-- so I'm assuming that's what Sherry was leading
ETA: should've read other replies before I posted haha - someone confirmed this - thanks! (The Top Gun/NFR earner wins the Ram truck)

Slower round tonight but Stingray still worked as usual! I hope she goes clean for 10.
I happened to see babyflo slip, hope she is ok Fallon was really checking her coming out . Did anyone else notice her dad almost got ran over coming out? She yelled something at him and he moved at the last minute. I wouldn't want that job in the alley leading them up or trying to stop them! |

Well in that case, I don't blame her.
Sabrina is another quiet rider....and it kind of bothers me! I want all these girls to do well but I see a lack of hustle in some of them. But I don't know if I could rodeo 10 days in a row....but for that money, I would be whipping and spurring the whole way.
Is anyone else noticing how important it is to get that nose? Makes me really think back to a YouTube video I saw with Danyelle Campbell and her talking about pulling to the hip to get the nose instead of lifting up which stiffens the rib cage. Easier said than done, but you really see it Up close and personal in these runs. |

I've always been taught to pull to the hip. But some have said pulling up & out is better. Idk. I guess it depends on the horse & rider. I would feel out of control with super long reins. |

Location: MD | Sherry- Stingray's first barrel was just spot on. Sherry took a bit of a different approach with that outside rein to the second tonight. Rather than wait until they were getting to the pocket and then bumping the outside rein to hold her on course, she opened that outside rein and guided Stingray onto a much safer path while going across the pen tonight. In doing so, Sherry was able to allow Stingray to have a more fluid second barrel turn and her normal snap was much more evident. Stingray didn't crowd the third as much tonight as she did in the previous round, but the bit of picking at the outside line that Sherry did have to do sure got her flat in the turn, resulting in her being tight on the backside and having to step off leaving.
Trula- Well, the problem with magic tricks is that the audience always seems to figure out how they work in the end. This was definitely a bit the case with Worm tonight. The first barrel was quite nice and Trula rode very aggressively. The bit change had just lost it's magic after a couple of rounds and Worm was definitely getting sticky footed at the second again tonight. Trula did just about everything one could to try and get by there. With the lack of the extra momentum that they had in the two previous rounds, when Trula went to the outside rein in an attempt to hold Worm out, that inside shoulder just dove in harder. A very aggressive ride at the third worked beautifully tonight.
Sydni- I thought that Sydni had made a very wise decision last night in backing off and trying to focus on Clancy being correct and the timers backed up that thought process. I'm not sure if Sydni felt as though that one night of tuning would be enough and opted just to go for it tonight, but sadly, that wasn't the case. Clancy certainly came into the arena much harder tonight than he has in previous rounds and as such, just never really got himself together for the first barrel. I must say, he seemed to really be trying to make up for it on the way to the second. Definitely more focused on hitting his points tonight, they got into the second barrel quite well. Again, another step through the backside and more support from Sydni would have allowed for a much better finish coming off of the second barrel. Even with a less than ideal approach to the third, Clancy found the backside and finished quite nicely. In the end, this NFR will have given Clancy a ton of exposure to the birhgt lights, which is a good thing because I'm sure they will make it here again.
Shada- This team was on tonight. Shada stayed up and square and really rode Dial It all the way through the first barrel tonight. She did a wonderful job of setting up yet another great second turn by lifting that inside rein and setting Dial It back on his hocks, all the while continuing to ride forward and straight into the pocket. I felt as though Dial It was running just a bit stronger to the third tonight and really driving that inside hind leg all the way into the hole. That added momentum allowed for a rather fluid turn at the third. It was definitely the best third barrel I have seen out of this team all week. Shada did catch his face leaving again, but in a much less obtrusive way than last night. Hopefully, after a couple of good turns in a row, she will allow him a bit more freedon tomorrow. I was super glad to see this pair get a nice piece of the payout tonight.
Jean- I'm sure that I drove everyone in the house crazy yelling at the TV while Jean was running tonight. Jean got to the inside again as she approached the first, but stepped to her outside stirrup just enough to get Zan to step back up and clear it. In doing so, they got a bit deep behind it. Having done all of that maneuvering at the backside of the first, Jean didn't moved over onto that line that she carried to the 2nd barrel last night and it almost cost her another downed barrel here tonight. This little horse has such a cowy stylethat even when things get tight, he never breaks his momentum. I'd need a whole roll of duct tape to stay in the middle when he snaps through the backside at the 2nd, for sure. I felt as though Jean once again got tipped over the inside shoulder as they entered the third barrel. In this case, it did cause Zan to get heavy up front for just a step, but that step certainly slowed them down just a bit.
Jane- Jane did a great job of using her outside aids at the first barrel tonight. She really hustled out of there and got her horse straight. That allowed for a much better entrance to the second barrel than she had last night and the difference in the turns was like night and day. This horse has such a fluid turn when everything is set right and sure kept the motor running through that turn tonight. Jane really lifted up and across the neck in order to get by the third tonight. She actually got indirect enough that she really got her horse's head and neck a bit out of position. As a result, there was a bit of a fight when she opened that inside rein again and pulled to finish the turn. That little bit of resistance and shaking of the head causes minimal disturbance to the speed being carried away from the backside, but as we all well know, in this game .01 of a second can make a huge difference.
Lisa- A very uncharacteristic downed barrel for this pair was certainly disappointing. It looked to me as though Louie got a bit bouncy as he set for the turn. It could be that he got just a bit heavy on his front end after so many rounds of running to that wall, but it seemed more like he maybe found an unfortunate bit of ground. Either way, that slight disturbance in his stride caused what had been up until that point, an expertly ridden turn to get just a bit shorter than it should have. From there out, it was a textbook run for Louie and Lisa. This team is so super consistent that I could almost copy and paste from one night to the next.
Taylor- Bo came off of the first barrel just a bit stiff and didn't get the best of finish. Taylor did a great job of lifting her leg to clear the barrel, but it appeared to me as though in having done so, she actually stepped into her outside stirrup a bit, which caused Bo to straighten as he did. Having come off of that first barrel just a bit low, they got to the second barrel with very little pocket as it was. As soon as Bo went to make his normal move, Taylor dropped her outside rein and followed him into the turn. Staying two handed and driving him one step further up might have saved them. That being as it may, having ridden horses with a similar style, it can be very difficult to accomplish. The third barrel was a s close to perfection as a horse of this style can get. Absoloutely not a single ounce of wasted motion, energy, or room. Taylor's a tough cookie and she won't let this get to her.
Kaley- Cowboy is just a machine. Kaley rode much more centered tonight and it showed in the turns. She still got forward a bit in the left turns, but she remained squarely in the middle. Kaley does such a great job of being quiet with her hands and really using her feet to move him into position. Hopefully, this is the sort of ride that we see from Kaley for the last two rounds.
Brittany- I was very glad to see that Brittany rode much more squarely tonight, as well. No leading off with the outside rein, or leaning into the turns tonight. While SuperFly's turns were not quite as polished as they were the first night that we saw him, I felt as though that was more a matter of him being a bit on the muscle and running as though the atmosphere maybe had him a bit more up than normal. Brittany will have settled back in and cleaning the backsides up, I'm sure.
Sabrina- I thought it was a wise choice to get back on Uno tonight. A little more hustle through the first turn would have set them up for a much better entrance to the second barrel tonight. Sabrina did a great job of getting back with her horse after a squeaky moment there on the backside of the second. Again, a more aggressive ride was definitely needed in order for them to go clean at the third. If Sabrina would get two handed and drive for a spot that would allow the turn to happen five feet behind the barrel instead of starting five feet before it, the outcome could have been much different for this pair.
Fallon- That fall coming into the first barrel was ugly! I felt as though both Fallon and BabyFlo recovered remarkably well, all things considered. Having had that fall really shook up Fallon's focus going across to the second, quite understandably. It appeared to me as though upon approaching the second, Fallon just did what she could, which in this case was to bump straight back on her outside rein. This caused BabyFlo to drop that inside shoulder and dive in pretty hard. Even with everything that had already happened, Fallon rode aggressively, stayed squared and didn't allow for her horse to flatten at the third. She did ride it one handed tonight, as is her preferred way of doing it. Having gotten two handed for a couple of rounds seemed to have helped to free BabyFlo up enough that it worked beautifully tonight.
Christy- Movin' ran through her rate point again a bit tonight at the first. This little mare has so much power that if she doesn't get set just right, her stride just carries her by, even when she is arced and trying to make the proper turn. Christy gave her a great ride at the second and you couldn't have asked for it to have been much nicer. Movin' shortened back up and dropped that shoulder coming to the third tonight. Christy will need to get two handed all the way into the hole tomorrow and really drive her up there square to regain control of that shoulder, but I have no doubt that she will do just that.
Michelle- Slick is just devouring the first barrel in the T&M. Michelle has such great timing with this horse and it seems as though they could turn a flawless first barrel in this pen even if both of them were blindfolded. I have watched multiple times to try and see what caused the slip at the second, but to no avail. The one thing that I do know is, Michelle set the turn up well and neither of them let it effect them. What a recovery! Michelle maybe picked Slick off of the third barrel a bit more aggressively tonight than in previous rounds. Normally the motion is more of an elevated leading rein with the outside. Tonight, I didn't feel as the rein was opened away from his neck as much and rotated a bit higher and further back toward her body than normal. I felt as though this got Slick bogged down on his front end just a bit, which caused him to get a bit hung up in the ground and not finish quite as he normally would.
Mary- Mary gave her normal, competent ride at the first and it worked just as it has so many times. Latte got as short at the second barrel tonight as he has in the last couple of rounds. Mary held her shoulders and hips square enough to get him by it, but you could see her outside hand starting to pick him off and her chin tip ever so slightly to the inside, to gauge whether or not they would clear it. They did get by it, but barely. About two strides out from the third, you could see Mary starting to think that they were going to crown the third. As soon as she had that thought, so did Latte. Mary's attempt at pulling him off of it with both reins Just caused him to come into it even harder. Mary knew what was coming and looked right to the scene of the crash long before it actually happened. Hopefully, we'll see Mary get back to using her body to hold him square, as she did in the last couple of rounds. |

| It can't be said too many times how incredible, amazing and unbelievable Sherry and Stingray are. 8 rounds, all winning checks and some of the checks first place- wow!!!!!! How mentally tough is Sherry, wish she could bottle that up and sell me some. |

Location: Cocoa, Florida | Can anyone tell me if Fallon trained baby Flo herself? If she did kudos to her, I've watched a lot of her training videos online it's not quiet my style of riding but that horse has a pretty pattern not to mention he gets down on his arse and slides around each barrel following his nose perfectly. There's a reason he's AQHA horse of the year!!!! I love watching the different styles of horses and riders.

hammer_time - 2013-12-12 3:15 AM Anyone else notice Sydni not really hustling?
Maybe it's not what the horse needs but it sure stood out to me.
Quiet doesn't mean not hustling. You can ask the horse to run without doing a bunch of obvious kicking and whipping. A lot of horses will run harder from hustling with your seat and smaller leg movements from the knee down in their rhythm. It doesn't look like a hustle but it is. |

Agree. Whipping and spurring doesn't work on all horses. I've got some that would freak out if I did all that. Use your body and drive them forward doesn't require riding wild. JMO |

Unbelievable year Sherry is having! The commentator mentioned last night that no one has placed in all 10 rounds since Kristie and Bozo in the 90's. Would love to see Sherry join them!
I'm curious about Jean and Zan, I haven't been following them up to the NFR. Clearly these tight patterns just are not their thing, lots of down barrels and just not clocking. What kind of patterns did he excel on through the year? Does anyone know? |

So true. Kimmi Byler would run Amanda Rutleges horse Forture sometimes and Kimmi told me that she always thought Amanda needed to hustle more - till the first time Kimmi rode him. She said the more you do the slower he gets. Amanda would ride quiet and almost take the whole 1D at 500+ shows. |

Sherry & Stingray are on track to break the NFR average record held by Jill & Dolly set back in 2010? Jill averaged 13.82 on each run... Sherry is averaging 13.77. If her and Stingray leave 9 more barrels up and get around them in less than 13.95 each night.

I don't know how many rodeos Jean actually placed at all year but the only runs I saw her make were at the Calgary Stampede. She had bad runs in the long go and made it back to the short go in the wild card with a good run and then smoked a run in the short go. That one run bought her a ride to the NFR. Calgary is not an easy rodeo, so kuddo's to her!! But I would say Zan maybe likes the bigger outdoor pens. That is just a guess though!

Oh how I miss Jill and Dolly, my favorites to watch!! I sure hope Sherry can leave them standing the next two rounds. Wow, what pressure that has to be! I am sure it's on her mind!! The average, the World Title....average record...wow!! Fingers will be crossed for her each night!! |

| Great input. I enjoyed reading it very much. These girls are doing a fantastic job. I think, as you do, that Sherry is just a super technician. She is definitely up for the challenge. I love Mary & Latte, just a dynamic pair. Taylor, the rookie, I am so enjoying her and her super horse Bo. Bo and Taylor a cool in the alley & when it's time to work, man she runs a nice correct pattern. All of the ladies definitely earned their spots there and I pull for them all each night. But Fallon.....she is fun, fun, fun. You can miss her rolling out of the alley way and she has no fear. I am enjoying the different styles of each rider/horse team and not knowing who will come out on top. One of the best NFR barrel races for me in a very long time.
P.S. I appreciate your thoughtful critique. |

I have to say that I do not like all that whipping. I'd like to see what some horses would do if you took away the whip. I might do a little neck slap but I really don't whip my horses unless I feel they are cutting me off at the s/f line, but I really don't like the ones that over do it on the way out. I rode another horse that would sulk up n not run at all if you spanked her. |

I'm a horrible story teller but I watched an interview that may or may not have been with her brother Tuff? and he said Pendelton was harder on Trevor than Shada. She really needed a good check from that rodeo to make the Finals. He was a nervous wreck and she said - it'll be ok. |

She went all the way down with Stingray & came off at the second barrel. I know it was a later round & rode George but that's about all I can remember. That barrel gave quite a few girls problems yesterday. |

I am on this bandwagon as well. I feel for the girl. I can't even imagine being married to a superstar like Trevor let alone make it to the NFR right alongside of him!!!
While I am anxiously awaiting and hoping Sherry takes it all, I find myself pulling harder for Shada to get up there and pull a big check. I hope she had a ton of fun this year and she comes back again next year! |

Me three Me four! Heard Trevor say that Shada has a never give up attitude...

| I think this is the strongest and most competitive group of gals that I can remember at the NFR. At the start, I really think any one of the 15 could have been on top. It has just come down to who is having a better week, not necessarily on competitive ability. Fun to watch! I'm rooting for all of them to collect a check! |

Watched the round again on youtube, sounded like Fallon yelled she went down to her dad. Could be wrong though. Hope babyflo is ok
I thought she was yelling look out to the guy standing square in the middle of the alleyway looking the other way. I wasn't sure who it was or why he was there, but he is lucky she was watching for him. |

Hoping she's not hurt from last nights slip.. Slick had a slip on that same barrel. Seems like I remember someone else slipping there too but can't remember who. There goes my awesome story telling skills again. Wasn't Sherry who had a slip on that second barrel on Stingray last year and had to use George..I believe it was in the 9th round..... ??? It was a later round but I can't remember which. I want to say she ran George one night and then got back on Stingray?
She went all the way down with Stingray & came off at the second barrel. I know it was a later round & rode George but that's about all I can remember. That barrel gave quite a few girls problems yesterday.
It was the 6th round |

Maybe it's not what the horse needs but it sure stood out to me.
JMO I have to say that I do not like all that whipping. I'd like to see what some horses would do if you took away the whip. I might do a little neck slap but I really don't whip my horses unless I feel they are cutting me off at the s/f line, but I really don't like the ones that over do it on the way out. I rode another horse that would sulk up n not run at all if you spanked her.
my horse is one of those that doesnt like whipping and I dont use spurs. I cant tell where some horses speed up when they are whipped. I know I wouldnt like someone to whip me to make me go faster. |

I have a video of my buckskin (when he was 4 or 5) actually looking 1/3 of the way back around at me when I got him with my over and under on the way out of the pen. And of course, it slowed us down! After that, I'd just shuck my hands between his ears and hustle with my voice and body....no more whip for him! |

Location: MD | Okay- Here we go!
Sydni- I give Sydni credit for trying to shake something loose and making a horse change this late in the game. I felt like she had a rather nice first tonight, especially being on a horse who is making it's first real run in there. A little outside leg and foot might have helped to stabilize her horse's hip through the backside of the first, but all in all, nicely done. I'm not sure how much experience Sydni has with riding in an Easy Stop, but this is a piece of equipment which requires a very specific ride. It is very difficult to "lift" a horse in one with your inside hand, as she tried to at the 2nd barrel. An Easy Stop requires that a rider stay level with their ahnds and requires one you to really use their seat and legs to cue properly for the turn. When Syndi lifted that inside rein and allowed her inside lower ribcage to collapse, she cut off Kickin's forward momentum and they just got a tad short. The same almost played ture at the third.
Shada- Dial It and Shada have been so consistent from round to round. She did a great job of setting up phenomenal turns and then getting out of the way and letting her horse do it's job at the first and second barrels. Leaving the second barrel, Shada opened her inside rein and bumped her horse's nose back to the inside, putting him on a perfect line for the third barrel. I felt like Shada had a very nice third barrel tonight. I'm not sure if she felt as though Dial It was floating off of the third and she was trying to hold him in, but she sure held onto him for quite some time. Even if he had been floating off, I would sure have liked to have seen her get both hands on the reins and ride him forward and straight off of her outside rein and leg. By dropping her left hand down and open, she was pulling down on her horses mouth, thus causing his head to elevate and him to fight more and more.
Jean- I just want to grab Jean by the shoulders and hold her upright for one more step at every barrel. I understand the need to get forward in order to stay with one who drops so hard in the turns, but Jean is allowing her core to deflate, as well. By stretching tall from her belly button, she would have herself positioned to be much more in control. That approach to the second barrel got them again tonight. As she proved a couple of Rounds back, if she gets Zan stepped just 5' further to the right going across the pen, that second barrel can work out for them. This looks like a super fun horse to ride and I must say, I'm happy to see Jean sticking with the boy who brought her to the dance, even if it hasn't gone so well for them.
Jane- Blackie got a bit hung out in that bend leaving the first again tonight. I would have loved to see Jane riding a bit more aggressively to get her horse a bit straighter headed into the second. Having been ridden into the second barrel with that leading outside rein, Blackie had to change his arc as he was coming through the backside of the turn, which definitely inhibited his ability to really snap through there. Even with all of that having been said, they hit every point in that turn and made it look easy. The third barrel was much the same as the 8th round for this team. Blackie got a bit short and Jane really went indirect with that inside rein. As high up the neck as Jane's hand was placed when she made that move, it really shut her horse down and onto his front end. Jane did a great job of being super aggressive with her body, shoving her horse by and keeping that third barrel standing.
Lisa- What can I say? Louie and Lisa are so dialed in and perfectly in sync. I do believe they could make this same run for another nine nights if they needed to.
Taylor- Taylor actually settled in for that first barrel just half a step too early tonight and it almost got her. Bo is so butt draggy that Taylor really has to keep driving him forward, even as he is setting. She backed off just a bit tonight and Bo stepped off of the first leaving as a result of not having had that room coming in. This pair's second barrel is enough to make me hold my breath. I thought Taylor did a great job of riding him deep enough to get him in and out of the second turn with a less than ideal approach. Bo has been crowding that third barrel a bit more each night and a couple of rounds back I commented on what a great job Taylor did by allowing her shoulder to get back behind her hips just a bit and using her seat to really drive him by. Tonight, she came into the third with her shoulders in front of her hips, pointing in and then allowed her ribcage to soften. She was going to have to ride hard to get by that third tonight, unfortunately it didn't happen.
Kaley- I think Kaley finally realized just how well she is sitting in the average. She got square tonight and really rode like she wanted to keep the barrels up. She did go to the outside rein a bit at both the second and third barrels, to ensure that Cowboy stayed square, but this was such an improvement over what we were seeing from her earlier in the week.
Brittany- SuperFly missed his inside foot coming into the first and Brittany did a very impressive job of hustling him through there and straightening things back out. For once, I'm going to give Brittany kudos for leaning at the second barrel. Leaving the first as they did brought Brittany and SuperFly in extremely close at the second barrel. By leaving her upper body still and pushing her hips strongly to the right, she moved her horse over just enough in that monet to allow them to clear it. Unfortunately, anytime we get out of position, it has consequences. Brittany's sudden change in position caused her horse to really continue to step out through the turn. As she took ahold of her inside rein to try and straighten him for the finish, he just wadded up a bit more and spun his wheels for a minute. At the third, Brittany leaned forward and in again, causing SuperFly to get heavy up front and he really spit his hips to the outside as a result. That caused them to fade off of the barrel leaving it.
Sabrina- I still want to see Swivel get a nice first barrel. I think if Sabrina were to open her hip angle, sit down and set him two handed, we might see that happen. This team seems to do well at the second barrel by getting in there close and making up for it by taking that room on the backside. I know that this is a short pattern and things happen quickly, but Sabrina has to get two hands on the reins headed to the third. She did ride a bit more aggressively with her legs to the third tonight. As soon as Swivel started to set, Sabrina stopped kicking and looked right to the barrel. She has to keep riding forward and looking out through his ears, beyond the turn. She might even want to adjust her line of vision to where she's looking out over his outside ear, just to play it a bit on the safer side.
Fallon- The low placement of Fallon's outside rein got to pulling on BabyFlo a bit as she headed to the first barrel and the little mare definitely dropped that inside shoulder pretty hard. Fallon's straighter style of turning allowed her to get very aggressive with her inside aids and hold her horse upright long enough to get by, but it was very close. She got to sitting over her inside seat bone a bit headed to the second barrel, which started her horse's track toward hitting it a little early. For a few rounds there, Fallon got two handed and used a n opening outside rein to encourage BabyFlo to continue forward a step further at the second barrel, which also helps this horse to get much more set up over her hocks. This horse has such a wicked move that I can see why Fallong just goes with it so often, but without the knowledge of how and where to actually place her body, BabyFlo needs a bit more support than she was given. This team had a great third barrel again tonight.
Christy- It's always interesting to see how a horse will adapt to running ten nights in a row. Movin' seems to be getting more and more on the muscle each night. Christy did a very solid job of holding it all together at the first and second barrels. She might have gotten stepped out just a bit too far to the right on the entrance to the second barrel and as a result, her horse really dove at the backside. All of those changes in position so quickly left Christy having to pull at that inside rein just a bit leaving there. As hard as Movin' was running to the third, I think Christy felt as though she was going to be alright. The minute she dropped that outside rein and prepared for the turn, her horse just dove into it. She'll need to get two handed and maybe give Movin' a little bump from that inside rein to set her square and back over her hocks tomorrow night.
Michelle- Slick had a very nice first barrel. He got a smidge out of shape leaving it and I might have liked to have seen her ride him up just a bit straighter through his body going across the pen, but the second barrel worked out very well for them. Michelle attempted to lead him off with that outside rein at third barrel again tonight. After having done so this many nights in a row, her horse responded by pecking down with his front end and really swinging his hips to the outside. Without that hip up under him to drive him by, that third barrel couldn't be avoided. Michelle will need to set her sights about one more stride down the pen and get her outside foot on him, holding that hip in if she wants to get by tomorrow.
Mary- Mary got in a bit headed to the first and maybe went to the horn a stride, or two early, but she made it work quite nicely. Great forward ride at the second. Latte wanted that third barrel, but Mary refused to let him turn too soon. What an assertive ride with her inside shoulder and hip! She kept the entire inside of her body pointed to that back fence as long as possible and even after he was on the backside she kept riding straight for the fence until she knew that she was absolutely clear. Great job from Mary!
Sherry- Sherry has such a tremendous amount of feel and such quick responses to Stingray. She had to not only go across to the second with a leading rein tonight, but gave it a couple of bumps as she entered the pocket as well. The third was spot on. So many exciting things could be happening for Sherry and she deserves every one of them.
Trula- Worm got a bit short coming into that first barrel tonight. For a horse that is used to being run in a shanked bit, that snaffle is allowing Worm to get a bit heavier up front than normal. That is exactly what happened here at the first. When Worm's front feet dropped into the ground coming in, they stuck like glue. Trula did a great job of stabilizing her horse's hips as they finished the turn and rode out of there aggressively to get things lined back out. She gave a great ride at the second barrel tonight. If you remember, last night, as soon as she pulled out with the outside rein, Worm dove in. Trula kept ahold of her outside rein tonight, but planted that hand low on her horse's neck and allowed it to create just a bit of resistance without pulling Worm out of position. That smart bit of riding, coupled with a perfect "lift" of her inside rein set up a great turn. She did a great job of using her entire body to pick Worm up at the third and make sure that they stayed moving all the way around it. At this point in this marathon that we call the NFR, everyone is feeling the effects and you have to do what you have to do. Trula did just that!

Maybe it's not what the horse needs but it sure stood out to me. I'd read an article (and someone posted it on one of these threads) that she had broken her tailbone this year and had really bad nerve damage that was incredibly painful. I wonder if that's still bothering her. I'd love to see her get in the money before the week's over.

I understand that. I just meant that those horses might benefit from being hustled and a more aggressive rider. Hence the knocked barrels. Sometimes I see zero help from the inside leg. Great critique Wrap.....I do t know how you see all that!!! Do you watch it in slow mo? |

| I am so amazed at the times this year!! Taylor easily clocked every night and it looked like she pulled up when she hit barrels. That is so amazing to me. What was so hard to get close to the arena record in years past, this year it was touched almost every night. Wow. |

| I think the ground was much better this year. Didn't see near as many horses bouncing around the barrels. The ones that did bounce clocked in the 14's, usually. |

Location: Oregon | Bo looks to me like he has the makings of one of those superhorses that only come along once in a blue moon. Guess that remains to be seen. I think he might be another Bozo or Hotshot. Not another Scamper, I don't think that will happen because the sport has progressed so much. He just does it with such ease and clocks with some pretty big mistakes.
