Where at in OK? It's been pretty cold here the last few weeks, upper 20's low 30's during the day and lower teens and single digits at night. There were a few days we were negative in the morning's. If it's about the same temp at home I wouldn't worry about it.

Agree with JRC . . . it has been pretty cold here.  I have the whole range of coats in my herd.  From a prego who has a short coat to my Morgan who looks like a wooly mammoth.  Whether I blanket or not is decided by the horse and any plans I have with them.  If the horse is not shivering and is eating well with a good windbreak, them blanketing may not be necessary.  Use your best judgement, and let the horse tell you if he is comfortable or not.  On the other hand, if you want to keep the shorter coat, blanket.  I don't believe there is a right or wrong answer, as long as the horse is comfortable.

The thing I would take into consideration is the humidity levels. You may have higher humidity which makes the cold seem worse. We brought a horse up from OK one winter to SW Missouri. She had plenty of weight on her and had a pretty good coat as well. She was cold all winter. Had to blanket her a lot that year. She was out to pasture when we bought her, not stalled. She had plenty to eat and a barn to get into at our house, but seemed cold if we didn't blanket her. The only difference we could think of was the humidity level.

Depends on where you're moving from & where you're moving to. Also depends on when you're moving. This week? In a month?

Illinois winter air is generally dry. Oklahoma winter air is generally humid. Watch your horse for respiratory changes - usually going from dry to humid is worse than the other way around, but just keep it in the back of your mind that the air is very different.

Right now Illinois has 8" of snow in a lot of the state. If you are planning on stalling your horse then no, I wouldn't blanket unless you see that he isn't handling it well. If you are planning on turning out, I would blanket. If you are turning out you will need a good windbreak & shelter, the north winds will cut right to the bone. You need to watch whether the sun is out or not. The temperature might be 30 but the sun will warm them significantly, especially under a blanket, & it can cause sweating.

Our normal is 30-40.  A week ago here it was 7.  I did blanket with medium weight blankets.  Now I am stuck for the rest of winter.  My barn is an old cattle barn and has no sides so the wind can come through,  The boys can come and go as they please.  One would maybe be fine but it dropped so much I put them on.

I have one that huge temp. drops bother him. It went from highs of 80 to high of 35 in about 36 hrs. I put a blanket on him for a few days.
