I am not sure about the route you are taking but our valley and surrounding area (Owens Valley and the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas) is full of history, site seeing and some of the best lake and stream fishing in California! We have the Ancient Bristol Cone Forest (my favorite place in the world!), the Devil's Post Pile by Mammoth Mountain, Mono Lake, Yosemite National Park, the Bodie Ghost town, Benton Hot springs, Lone Pine Film Museum, Alabama Hills and Mt. Whitney not to mention several high Sierra lakes and hiking trails.

Isn't Devil's Post Pile closed? We tried to go when we were at Convict this summer but the office said that would be a no go. We ended up in Mammoth hiking a lake instead.

What part of CA are you looking at, like where are you flying in/out? So Cal has a huge variety, from Death Valley & Scotty's Castle, you can shoot over to Mt. Whitney and the Owens Valley as mentioned above, then head south to the LA area for Hollywood, the beaches, etc. Then go up along the coast to Santa Barbara and on up, which is about where I run out of useful ideas.

It was closed during the Government Shut Down. It re-opened later in the summer. I want to say they reopened all the parks the middle of October?

Oh, it was during furlough now that you mention that! We'd already planned the trip before that happened so I'd forgotten it wasn't on our regularly scheduled day off that week.

I live in San Diego too and my favorite thing to do is ride my horses. LOL!!

There are plenty of "touristy" things to do here, the zoo, the Animal Park, Sea World, Lego Land, Balboa Park, the museums, partying in PB/downtown (are you bringing lots of $$$?, LOL) The beaches, The Boardwalk, the Del Mar racetrack, Torrey Pines State Preserve, Cuyamaca Rancho State park, Borrego Springs...what do you WANT to do?

Whale watching is fun and I LOVE surfing even though I haven't done it since I was 18...SoCal is one of those places wheer you can surf, snowboard, and hike in the desert all in one day. Although I don't think you'll find snow or WANT to go to the desert in August. It CAN be hot here, but not really that humid compared to the rest of the country.

I would DIE if my horses were here and I could ride along the beaches.

The racetrack is neat because it's right next to the ocean--too cool.

If you want to see some cool things, Japantown in San Francisco is nice. Monterey as well, it is really pretty and the aquarium is superb! I also recommend getting satlwater taffees while you are there. :)

Oh! Also, Muir Woods is great for hiking. And Huddart Park and Wunderlich Park in Woodside are nice too, plus there are equestrian trails so you may run into a couple of riders.
