What about your horses and their weird quirks? |

| well My gelding is proud cut and thinks he still has his man berries, he paws all the time its constant and drives me mental, he also thinks he is a great descendant of a bucking horse, and he walks around like queen z does, he prances and dances and thinks his poop dont stink.
My mare is really nosey, the other night she untied herself and went around the indoor arena and barn and dumped every poop bucket she could find, she also took every single sign off the wall and emptied everything she could get her mouth on.. shes a pain. |

My older mare likes to hide her face in my jacket while she's getting her hooves trimmed. If I'm not wearing a jacket she will just hide her face in my arms. She also likes to smell hats. |

She's also a typical pregnant female and hates when I rub her belly :) |

| Without fail, every time I get off of my horse after a run, he all but DEMANDS to have his bridle taken off. He then proceeds to rub the left side of his face, right side, shakes his head then yawns. EVERY TIME! It's crazy. |

| My horse looks like the meanest horse ever. In his stall he will pin his ears back and shake his head at anyone that walks by. When you go around him in his stall to clean it, same thing.
When he is standing tied to be saddled-same thing.
He looks down right nasty-but NEVER does anything. The second you pet him or rub on him he turns into a complete LOVER boy. In his stall when you ask him to move over he steps out of the way. He is very respectful of space and again has never offered to actually take things further.
When I first got him-it threw me for a loop. I would scold him for being a grump, but that never got me anywhere.
Then I just let it be-has never had an issue since.
I chuckle though when someone else is around when I am saddling or cleaning his stall.
They always say LOOK OUT! He is going to do something.
I say NOPE he is all talk. I don't even notice it anymore, until someone else points it out. |

If I stop to talk she will shove me as hard as she can. She has knocked me over more than once. She is only happy tied to the back of the trailer, she likes to see whats going on at every angle around the trailer. If I take off running across the pasture she will run after me and buck and play next to me. Scares me a little when she gets close but she loves to play chase!!! |

Location: North Dakota | Red is a big time lefty. So every once in a while, he'll try to "ignore" my right lead cue and take his left instead. The instead I apply rein pressure to slow him down and make him do it right, he automatically switches on his own because he knows I "caught him". Which is weird because I have never once let him get away with it, but he still tries it.
Whether I have just rode for 1 minute or 1 hour, Red thinks his head is the itchiest thing in the world when his bridle comes off. He loves, loves, loves it when I scratch him.
My old horse Beau, when I was ready to cinch him up, no matter where he was standing, he HAD to move himself over all the way to his right. Always and every time.
My colt, Shotgun, follows me around like a dog. He's such a people person! He loves attention and loves getting to come along. |

Location: Washington | JJ hates being in an enclosed stall where he can't look out, I don't know how many stalls he about destroyed before we just shook our heads and started hanging stall fronts for him. Wasn't worth paying for a damaged stall or him getting hurt while being worked up.
He is a jerk on the ground (one of my BIGGEST peeves...can't stand a horse who has no manners). No matter what I do it never lasts long and he is right back to it. But I do have a line, and he knows when he crosses it lol. BUT when a kid is in the picture...total gentleman lol. Drops his head at their shoulder and protects them like a puppy dog and doesn't even think about pushing boundries.
When the LQ trailer is hooked up and I go to catch him he takes off running and bucking like a wild man, I just have to close my eyes and shake my head lol.
When you go to wrap legs to head to a race you cannot tie him up to the trailer or you'll never get a single leg wrapped. He is horrible at the trailer lol! Won't stand still, in place bucking, ect lol. Tie him to the hitching post and he stands there.
And he has a swag lol, things he is the best thing since sliced cheese.

Location: MD | my paint horse sucks on his tongue when he's really tired or nervous. he also would do anything for goldfish crackers!
my appaloosa will climb into round bale feeders and tires to sleep.. which is why we can't have them anymore (considering he's 16hh and a total tank he was asking to get himself stuck) He also will lift up his lip when he's happy, when he's getting scratched, groomed, treats, fed, anything. Before he runs he's all business and when we're in any holding pen or waiting near the arena he'll grind his teeth.
my QH is such a baby. he really hates being in trouble and when the other horse is being naughty he's always extra good. before you leave the barn at night he'll nicker really cutely to get a bedtime snuggle, he wants to put his face in your chest and arms and get ear scratches and kisses and he'll nicker and stare you down until he gets it. also when he gets his treat before I go back inside he wants to "cuddle" first, he wont eat it until you pet him down real good.
ETA: GREAT topic!!

He'll take his hard plastic feed tub in his teeth and scrape it on cement to make noise. He'll take your purse, walmart sack, garbage bag in his teeth and shake them until stuff falls out.

Location: Never in one place long | My Mare always has to Itch her face when I stop when I'm riding her... I dont' know WHY she always thinks she's itchy! She never wants to stand still when I get on her so I have to make her work almost everytime before she will stand still! She's smart too, if I don't have a treat when I go to catch her, she knows it and runs a way lol.
My grey is cinchy, if you even touch the cinch to her belly while she is tied she will freak out..other than that she is perfect. she also will NOT step on a pole, she has always been scared of them when they are lying down... she loves runninng poles but will jump them if they are on the ground.
I think quirks are what make horses unique and fun! :) always a challenge. |

Location: MI | Fly LOVES drinking water when we're somewhere -- slurps it, slops it around the bucket, then when she's done, holds a mouthfull in her mouth for 30 seconds or so. If I'm not careful she'll dump that mouthful all over me Always entertaining.
Although as much as she loves drinking water, she does not like to go into water. My previous horses always loved riding into and playing in our pond, but she wants nothing to do with it. On a hot day I try to tell her she would really like it. She's not buying it though. |

| My gelding likes to dunk his head in the water tank, almost to his eyeballs, and slosh water all over the place. Mostly in warm weather. He picked that up from a little mare I had for awhile. He likes to take the water hose out of the tank. He will stand tied, but moves all over the place when I'm trying to saddle him. Kind of like trying to saddle a worm. |

Location: KS | My paint gelding would fling his head left to right really fast when he saw you with a grain bucket and when you'd ask him "Do you want it??" He would fling his head up an down. Another cute thing he did, when I would leave to go to school, he would always neigh like he was saying "Bye Mom!! See Ya Later!!" When you rubbed his belly, he'd stick his lip up an twitch it. He was such a character.
My mare ALWAYS has to scratch her head on your butt when you got off her. When she gets excited she also moves her head left to right really fast. It's adorable. Every say she has to paw until she gets her grain and before she makes her run at a show. |

Location: Chehalis, Washington | My main girl is strange.. I love her to peices! But, she is marish. And sweet.. if thats possible lol.
She can just stand alone in her paddock and kick out squeeling just cause. She has broken many fences, board etc. When I first purchased her the barn owner put her in with another horse for a week. They seemed to be best friends, and then one day she cornered him and kick the #%@# out of him and he almost went through the stall wall.. I replaced the boards, payed offered to pay her vet bill.. he had a swelling everywhere and is 30 she said no as it was her fault. My mare spent two months healing from a small cut that got infected on her back leg.
So now she lives by herself OR in a large field where others can get away.. She will spin on her front end waiting for soemone to get close at times its entertaining, but stressfull at same time!
She is super sweet to me though! lol. Gives non stop kisses, loves loves attention. When she is in heat she can be rather annoying though as she wants to rub up on everything. Yet kick it at same time. She can go into heat once every other week sometimes.
Despite all the drama involved with her, she has a ton of heart, loves to work and does anything I ask of her. Shes only 5 so thinking she will mellow out with age.. but we shall see :) |

Location: Idaho | I have a horse that likes to cross her back legs when she is resting. My old rope horse likes to stand sideways at the trailer and has taught all of our other horse to do the same. He will also pull things out of the trailer to find treats if you leave the tack room door open. I used to have a horse that like to back up to anything and everything and rub his back leg on it. Another one of my mares hates when other horses walk ahead of her on the way home. She flips her head, pins her ears and attempts or threatens to bite the other horse. |

| Dee has to wash her mouth out and splash in the water bucket before getting a drink, she also has to have her supplement treats crushed into powder and hid in her feed for her to eat them (it's made of apples, carrots and molasses only its for high performance horses and she will NOT eat it, she will pick around any little piece of it if you don't completely crush it)
Archie is proud cut, so he is a professional stall climber. He's also gate sour unless it's an alley, then he's fine. He's bipolar, and I think a decendant of a professional bucking horse, everyone says he would give a cowboy a good bucking ride with how flashy he bucks. (Great thing to have isn't it), but he could only be a saddle bronc because he only cow hops bareback. He likes his twisted wire combination long shank better than his snaffle bit (he refuses to even let me put it in his mouth now, when he opens his mouth for the twisted wire before I even get to him. That is his only pro) |

| Mic is impossible to bath without getting soaked as he likes to grab onto the hose and play with it, and almost always manages to squirt it right at you. If he cant do that, he will stand on it and you cant bath him at all. He paws uncontrollably if my husband stands between him and I, but the second we trade spots he'll put his head down and behave.
He also likes to back his bum around so he can scratch the inside of his hocks on the fender of the trailer... If you're willing to scratch the inside of his hind legs for him he'll make every face in the book, and you'll be friends for life (as long as you're female- he tolerates men, but makes it known that he's not a fan).
Also, if he sees someone holding a Tim Hortons cup he will darn near do back flips to have a taste of whats in it. HE is known for knocking over any cup around him and licking up its contents, unless you're willing to hold the cup up and give him a sip.
Yes, i am fully aware that he is obnoxiously spoiled, but I love him. haha

My gelding does that! Especially when he is waiting for grain( he is the last to get fed) he also will lick you to death. If you stand there long enough he will lick anything! I've had my face licked more by a horse in my life than any person should ever be licked by anything!
and Hemi while I'm giving him a bath when I go to spray between his legs he will lift up his leg on whichever side I'm on!

He is also a big watcher! He will perk his ears and watch every barrel racer go, he gets aggrivated if there are signs in his view and has to lift his head reallllll high!
He ALSO is a bit of a pest and pulls back on occassion, it made me laugh to hear that Stingray gives Sherry that "look" before so blowns up and that is exactly what my guy does. Love him |

Location: Oregon | My main guy is SUPER buddy sour with my mare I've been hauling lately, and he hates to be more than 10 feet away from her. She could care less, but his world is going to end if he isn't next to her. If he does have to leave her for a run, he is an absolute jerk until he gets back to her and can physically touch her with his nose. Its not enough to be next to her or see her, he HAS to bump her with his nose. He gets angry whenever any horse bites him, yet (to him) its completely ok for him to bite other horses. My retired gelding is a huge chatter box when its feeding time. He's this 16 hand tank and whinnys like a baby, super high pitched and cute. He also has recently began slamming his feed bucket against the wall as he eats - making a HUGE racket. My mare constantly paws in her stall if she knows I'm getting close to her stall to clean it. And the more bedding you put in her stall, the cleaner she keeps it. If there is just the minimum bedding in her stall, she will make the biggest mess you've ever seen, bed her nice and deep and more spoiled than any horse should be, she pees in one spot and poops in another. My sister had a mare for a while who would poop a pyramid on her 50lb salt block. No matter where it was in her stall, she'd build a pyramid by the end of the day! |

Location: Arizona | Our filly eats EVERYTHING. She has destroyed countless lead ropes, halters, tails, fly masks, she actually pulled down her sun shade and chewed it to pieces. Drags her water bucket around the stall or arena as soon as the water is low enough and ends up dumping the rest out. If we turn her out with another horse she will bicker with them the ENTIRE time. No stopping. She will chase and nip our Shetland mare non stop so can't be turned out together anymore. She has also destroyed 2 hoses that were left in her bucket. I could go on...most annoying horse ever. However, once she is caught she is an angel and rides like a broke 20 year old. Lopes a great pattern already too with less than 30 days on the barrels so I let these things slide.
My mustang makes a HORRIBLY goofy face during feeding time...I can't explain it but will try to get video and post it sometime. It's hilarious! Other than that he's perfect. |

Location: Iowa/Missouri | My current gelding, when he is in the trailer and the drop down window is down likes to have one corner of his windown screen undone so that he can have his nose sticking out while going down the road. And if one side is not undone he will break it so we've just made sure to put him in the spot in the trailer that has the one corner already broken.
My old barrel horse loved animal crackers. And would like your hand every now and then. Plus he was just a handful on the ground. Had to be untied to saddle otherwise he'd pull back. Was horribly buddy sour when hauled with another horse. Bucking and carrying on at the trailer. Loved to have his bridle removed as soon as the run is over and his tiedown undone.
My old pleasure horse, as he got older and we were in the line up at the end of a class would make the biggest yawns possible........every single time. He also did not like BLUE tarps. (We had to walk across one for a trail class), Also as he got older and you were in line up at a bigger show and the people clapped he would do a little baby rear and be a butt. He also would spook at random things just cuz he knew he could get away with it in the middle of a class going down the rail. |

| My older horse always poops in one corner no matter what the stall and pees in the middle. He also is a HUGE slob when eating grain, he has to have a stop cleaned under his feed bin clean so he can eat the grain that goes on the floor. He also can't have his water bucket in the stall when he eats because he will drop his grain in his water bucket. My mare has to pee right where her hay falls on the ground in one corner.

That still doesn't stop him though, he will drive his whole head into the tank with water going into his ears just to grab the heater. Every winter he has little burns all over his nose and lips.
He has a jolly ball, other toys, a buddy, and an entire huge pasture to keep him busy but he still has to go for the the d*mn heater!

| Where do I begin! LOL. My horse always has to jiggle the bit and his top bit. Everytime I stop when exercising him. He also will untie himself if he's bored and play with the lights on the trailer (our switches are on the outside) if its hot and I have a bucket of water hanging by him, he'll splash around in it up past his ears. And he loves to drink from the hose when giving him a bath.
My mom's horse loves to play with tubs and buckets. If there's rubber feed tubs on the ground, she will flip every single one Over and stomp them inside out. Also she will back up underneath the water buckets hanging on the trailer just to be a brat. |

Location: Kansas | Chance: He growls when we warm up. Sometimes he'll refuse to take the correct lead, spook at nothing important, or buck just because he can. He also has no ground manners for me but is a perfect gentleman for Matt. He picks on Clifford constantly but sometimes I'll catch him licking Clifford's neck so he's not always hateful. He is obsessed with my cell phone and wants to smell it every time I have it in my hands.
Clifford: When he's done eating out of a feed pan or a feed bucket, he picks it up and looks at me like "hey I want a refill." He also gets his feelings hurt easily and wants to be loved on. If I put treats in a coat pocket, for the next week anytime I wear that coat around him he licks the outside of the pocket.
Joker: Cannot be alone at the trailer or he nickers constantly and runs back and forth at the end of his lead rope. He also loves to splash in the water bucket after a run. He HAS to be the boss of the pen but I've never seen him actually kick at another horse or bite one. He pins his ears and acts like he's mean, and so far, he has all the others believing that he'll hurt them if they step out of line.
Mine all have quirks but Matt's gelding Joker is the quirkiest. If Matt is gone for a couple days, when he comes back home, Joker will give him the cold shoulder for a day. Also if you're standing near his Joker, you have to look at him or pet him or talk to him AT ALL TIMES. If you ignore him for more than a couple seconds, he'll nudge you with his nose to get attention. |

Location: Texas | My old horse has always liked to make noise. When I had a steel trailer, he ran his teeth across the gravel guard, and he could never stay in a metal stall because he'd kick it all night.
My paint horse lived with mules in his early years - he learned all their habits, including escaping and pushing gates down. |

Location: Oklahoma | This is pretty funny reading all of these..
My little paint mare, Miss Amy-- holds her left front leg up when she eats and loves to have her butt scratched. She acts like she hates people- but once she finally decides she likes you-she loves attention. She is def slow to warm up to people.. some she never does. She is very picky about who gets near her.
Rusty- my daughter's retired barrel horse- opens and shuts the round pen gate. Took us forever to figure out how other horses were getting stuck in there. Then happened to see one day when another horse went in. Rusty RUNS over and shuts the gate. Mystery solved. This actually comes in handy-- He's is always the last to get done eating- and Amy will go run him off and eat his.. so we feed him in there and when he's done- he just lets himself out. he's so funny. He never paws at anything else except when its feeding time. He goes to his fence feedbucket and waits. If I am not fast enough he starts pawing, and if I am taking even longer than he thinks I should- He will come stand behind Amy and paw -just in case I don't know HE'S WAITING.
Jazz our black gelding will go walking with me. Sometimes when I walk out in the pasture- he will follow me the whole walk. Well him and the cat! Zoe.
I love watching them and figuring out what they like and who they are. Horses are such cool animals. I love mine's different personalities.

| When I got my gelding he had trust issues, he is now completely over them with me, but only me. He is a big mommy suck, only I can catch him, he will pull back on my husband if he try's to saddle him. My new mare is a complete diva, always looking for attention, loves to shove her nose into anyone, loves to give and get kisses but the kisses are only with me. One gelding will not poop near where they eat and try's to train anyone penned with him it is not acceptable to poop where you eat. My husbands good gelding ALWAYS rolls right after eating his grain. A five year old gelding paws non-stop while eating his grain but only eating his grain. My sons mare LOVES water! Hot days if she is in the dugout pen she can be found swimming, in the other pens she's been known to not let the others drink defending her waterer, rides into any body of water without hesitation and proceeds to paw or even try to lay down in it. |

My gray and Matt's mare both do this. Doesn't matter which trailer we tie them to (his is aluminum, mine is steel covered in county road dirt LOL), they lick it. Chance is a licker.......he LOVES it when I put a salt or mineral block out for them and I think the others do too cause then he stops licking them! |

Location: NE Texas | I have a self mutilator. Yep....he will eat on himself if he's not getting enough stimulation. He's done it since he was a weanling and is now 3. Looked like he was chasing his tail as a baby, but now he can't get to his tail so he bites his flanks or his forearms and will kick the fence. He doesn't do it at all if he's getting worked regularly, but if he's bored, he's eating on himself. Just goes to show that an idle mind is the devil's playground....even for horses. |

My mare does this. She is weird.
Grasshopper has the worst habits. He is a DIVA. I can guarantee that no one has as big of a DIVA as I do. It was bad before the accident but now that he knows I will do anything to save his life, it is out of control. Since everyone went on hiatus, and we brought another horse in that happens to be a gelding, he has been in a FOUL mood. As in, you can't touch him without him trying to bite you, he has lifted his leg to pretend to kick A LOT, and he will not eat unless you set his food down and walk away. He has never been this bad.
he has taken to shaking my trailer. He did it before the accident but now it is way worse. Doesn't matter which or whose trailer it is and it doesn't matter where in the trailer and it doesn't matter if there are horses in or around him or whatever. That trailer is being shook.
He is a cripple. And doesn't do anything fast anymore. And is the shortest out of all of the horses right now. And yet somehow, ALL horses bow down to him. He struts around like he lives in a kingdom and the other horses are his minions. And none of them ever do anything to him. It is ridiculous.
Also, Grasshopper LOVES his PHT blanket. LOVES it. He will stand quietly and let you put it on him (the only thing he will do that for). However, if there is a chance that you are going to take it off, he will run away, freak out, whatever, and he has destroyed it three times doing that. That poor blanket...
One other thing-chiro and acupuncture adjustments are hilarious. He knows Barbie really well and LOVES her. Will come up to her and is super nice. But he is horrible to get adjusted. We have to cover his eye. But yet, after she adjusts him, he looks at her and looks like he is going to fall over he is so relaxed. He literally sways back and forth. And won't leave her side until the needles are in him then he closes his eyes and falls asleep. It's like a habit now. |

Location: Riding Crackhead. | I have one that tries to buck me off each time I get on and I have one that goes through 1 - 2 leadropes every 2 weeks because she eats them. My other horses have quirks too but not near as interesting.

| When I'm feeding, my 3 year old will pee as she goes to take the first bite of her grain. EVERY night and EVERY morning. She will also weave in the stall, buck while tied to the trailer, and does this very funny thing with her mouth lol
Another one of mine will pull back at the trailer unless I tie her to the back door on the stock trailer or I have to leaver her on the trailer in our 6-horse.
My 19 year old gelding will kick out if you pick up your whip and try to get him pumped up before you run. |

| I've had some lead rope eaters too, but those big rubber ties solved the problem. My riding area is two acres and my two year old filly takes my poles down. I find them scattered all over the 2 acres |

Location: Phoenix | KDS - 2013-12-19 9:23 AM Fly LOVES drinking water when we're somewhere -- slurps it, slops it around the bucket, then when she's done, holds a mouthfull in her mouth for 30 seconds or so. If I'm not careful she'll dump that mouthful all over me Always entertaining.
Mine does this too! Except he'll hold it for 5 minutes and surprise me when he finally opens his mouth again.
Mine me also likes to stick his nose out the window while were driving. And he licks the trailer. And he'll eat practically anything. He doesn't have any naughty quirks besides the lead rope chewing though. Thank goodness. |

| My mare has a few: Petrified of needles Hates to have her nose touched Stall walks, pasture paces & weaves Will run you over to get her butt scratched If she is not turned out of her stall by 6:05am she weaves like a madwoman Will not paw, but stands with her left foot (always left) pulled all the way up when mad Pops her bottom jaw out to the right (always right) when nervous She totally freaks when you run the generator with her tied to the trailer Yep, shes's a hot mess, but i love her! |

graciemay - 2013-12-19 10:39 AM When she gets nervous, Six will hold one foot up, but won't actually paw.
This looksjust like my ma're except mine does her left foot. NEVER does it touch the ground. She looks really intelligent when she does that and pops her bottom jaw out to the right at the same time. Lol |

My last horse was a lead rope chewer - anything she could reach she would put in her mouth - it was like having a giant toddler around. |
