Location: CA | I am looking at horses as my oldies are slowing down, but I wonder at 56 if there is any reason I can't still be competitive with the right horse? I mean I don't think I feel as old as I am, so I am wondering (if you will admit it) how many barrel racers are "over the hill" lol |

Location: Texas Big Country | I am older than you. I am riding 3 runners right now I raised from babies. I am going to train at least 3 more before I am done. I have a 4, 3 and a yearling out here waiting on me. These are all my "home grown" experiments. If they dont pan out I will decide then if I will start riding one I didnt raise again.
Age is mind over matter, if you dont mind, it dont matter. But then June Holeman is my hero, lol!
I say go til you just cant go any more. Then you will know you were really done. Just ride smart and be careful cause it takes a lot longer to recover from owies and that is prescious time wasted at this time in our lives. If it takes 40 extra steps to avoid a risk, take them.
Best wishes! |

| Several years ago an elderly lady, probably in her 70's approached my husband in the parking lot to ask about the pen, what a good time was, etc. After she left he commented wonder who she is asking for, surely she doesn't compete at that level. She won the race by 2 tenths. My husband never judged again. |

We've won more than our entry fees and some average awards so that sure helps. And she won't take her horse back home.

I crashed going around the third this summer and broke a rib. Never had a broken bone before... so it kind of freeked me out. THanks for the posts! I will keep looking. |

Riding? Winning! She's just started running a new 6 year old this year that is the most amazing horse. She just set an arena record in McCook, NE, after coming from OKC (placed 2nd in a round of the open I believe), after coming from Waco, where she ran I believe the second fastest time of the week. She dominated the amateur associations this year on him, and placed at some pro rodeos too. She is somewhere around 72 years young, I believe! |

| As I advance into my 50's I am hoping to retire Xena from racing and replace her with one at least as fast, but smoother running. Any strong horse whiplashes a little on takeoff, but Xena is really, really hard on the back. Both of her trainers are very happy that I choose to compete on her and don't make them! LOL! I'm hoping my DFP colt is smoother, and maybe a real 1Der for my mid to later 50's!! |

Still riding, making the 4d having fun , and bond with girlfriends and guys, there is the occasional smartass that thinks she owns the best and fastest horses and the arena, but she will get older also. There is nothing I would rather do, and plan on doing until I cant walk anymore, maybe after that!!! |

My current gelding is hard on my back too. I am looking at another gelding that is more cowbred, and Zippo Pine Bar is his grandsire. Hoping he is a little smoother.... I won't say I am nor ever have been a 1d rider, but I sure try hard. lol I swear my horses kind of take care of me. |

| I hate to admit it, but I am the same age as you. I have heard that as you get older, your horses get smaller and smoother running. The horse I have now is probably the most talented, hard running, biggest horse I have competed on ....when she is sound....
I have 2 coming 3 year olds to break and am finally getting around to finishing my now 10 yr old home grown mare who is built like a brick house and inherited her momma's athletic ablilities and hopefully speed, but she can be VERY hard on my body.
I have a long running, rather intimate relationship with my chiropractors. They know how badly my poor body gets abused. Unfortunately that's not a recent development but has been going since my early 30s. But they DO keep me going!
My biggest obstacle is drumming up the ambition to go out and ride when conditions are not perfect. Too easy to tell myself that I can ride tomorrow. Unless there are rodeos to get ready for. I cannot tell you how many groups of rodeo contestants I have seen come and gone, but I refuse to give up while I still love it and have a chance to place once in awhile. |

Dont worry I'm not going to hurt you my pretty, not in front of everybody that is I'm going to be 56 in Jan. and still riding when I get a chance to, this spring I'm planning on getting back to going to the barrel races again now that my grandbaby has gotton older and I dont worry about her so much. I have a couple of nice horses and I just need to get my butt in gear and start going again, being over 50 should not stop you from riding, I dont feel any older so I just keep on trucking. I have a few friends in their late 60's and 70's that kick butt. Love you Jennifer |

| I have a friend that is in her 50's she was a very competitive rider years ago but was diagnosed with MS several years ago and stopped riding. She is now trying to compete this year in barrels before her body gives out, she also has RA and a titanium knee . She bought a little mare from me that hadn't run in years we have run her 3 times and she keeps getting a little faster, not a 1D horse but will be 2D when fit up a little more. I don't think there is any reason you can't be competitive. |

I am making the big leap and quitting my job and going to ride this year, because I feel if I don't do it now I'll never be able to,,, Me and my husband are blessed to be able to allow me to do so, of course I won't have extra money to play around with, but think I'll find a part time job so I can earn enough to play at the local shows and see if I can still do it

| I am 55 and have had 2 back surgery and have ra. For the last 4 or 5 years i cared for my husband and he has since passed away, now my gelding has a fusing hock and, it taken me all year to get a proper diagnosis and a pocket full of money from lameness vets. I have to get him his shockwave so we will be ready in the spring. But i have a hot, little weanie and will be breeding my lovely mare one more time and they will be my geldings replacement. I also sold a nice mare in 2004 to a then 64 year old lady that lady won about 3 or 4 saddles on that horse within 18 months and up until this fall still riding would be now except she needs to get her shoulder fixed. So us old kids can still ride, look at martha josey. i am in the ladies club of virginia and i at 55 is one of the younger ones and aint giving up for a while just bought a 14lq last year.

Location: Over by those oil wells, TX | I'm in the same boat. 60 in 3 weeks. I have given up twice but this last time seriously thought it would stick. Problem is I still have to work and although I wish i could play grandma everyday, I don't have that luxury and I haven't met anyone who wants to fly out of town a couple times a month so.. I'm getting way too chubby and weak.., even moreso than before... and allllllll the pretty 3year olds are for sale from the track.....I'm such a sucker for a pretty race colt. Lol. Here I go again! We all transition slowly off these horses, or not at all! Lol. |

| Ii am 57 and am sitting here reading the posts and am amazed at how many of you have mimicked my feelings and worries. Riding has also become hard on my body. I have three horses that I raised from weanlings. One is six, one five and a four year old. Two are the same on their dams side who is sun frost bred. Don't know how others feel, but they are tough and take time getting broke. They arent very forgiving when i have let them set a few days. I also have felt like I am running out of time to get everyone finished. Have almost made up my mind to sell one, so I can keep up. It's been good for me to hear all your positive thoughts to keep me going and not get frustrated with the lack of energy to get out there.. Thx everyone.. |

I have been off due to this injury since April. I am just now attempting loping, but I have lost my balance, my confidence and my left leg still goes numb. My hope is to begin hauling in January, but I'm not sure that is realistic. I'm afraid the longer I am off, the harder it will be to get back going. I have considered selling, but my husband says no way. He says he can't enjoy life if I have no horses. Lol...Guess I'll keep chugging along probably at a much slower rate than I was a year ago. So sorry this happened to you. Take small steps in getting back both mentally and physically. Maybe get a riding partner for support and encouragement. Have you checked with your doctor for any advice? Best of luck and instead of being in the lead line be the senior in line to get a check! |

But I do have four nice horses and plan on going to lots of jps this coming year. June Holeman is planning on making the nfr this coming year and she is running tough. A hero of mine is Pat Spratt from Wyo. She is 70 and tough as nails. She makes her circuit finals every year. We also have another great lady we run against- Jean Reeves- she is in her 80's and I am sure I can't keep up with her. So I am not getting older-just getting wiser!!! haha

I remember Pat Spratt when I competed in the Senior Pro Rodeos. Another one is Wanda Cagliari. This was several years ago when I was in the 40-50 year old group and trust me the 50-60 and 60 and over group of women were tough. They outran us young-uns. They had more fun and nothing to prove. I had a blast at the finals. They didn't pay very well but I gained a ton of inspiration from those gals. |

My husband rides with me a lot. I've went to a horsemanship in November which really helped me a lot, but because of my injury, was only able to ride 1/2 days. The clinician was very kind to push me but not too hard and it really helped my confidence. I've worked up to trotting, but I keep most everything in straight lines and avoid circles because of my lack of balance. I've only added in loping straight along the fence line this past week, but I can't lope long. As far as my doctor...he doesn't want me on horses ever again. My guess is he isn't a horse person. This doctor isn't my primary doctor. He's my pain management doctor. I've had 3 out of 4 doctors tell me it's ok to ride, so I do. It is just frustrational to want it so bad, but to be limited. #feelingannoyed. LoL |

| I'm 53 and having the time of my life! Have a nice finished horse that is 17. She takes good care of me. I have had her for 6 years, but just decided this year to sit up and ride and ask her. We have been clocking 2D against some tough horses , with a little more to give. She is still in great shape, has never been hauled hard. I'm going to hit a few ammy rodeos this summer. Just something I want to do for myself. I know I wont win a rodeo, but in the right pens, I could place. My mare is a gritty, tough horse, that can run on anything, so I'm hoping to have a little luck at the rodeos.
I hauled my daughter for years, making sure that she got to go and have fun, and I enjoyed watching her success. She is getting married next summer, but still plans on hauling. We are going to have such a good time next year! Its time for Mama to have fun now! |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | I have discovered that just having the horse still relaxes me even when I can't ride. I work full time and have only my pasture to ride in unless I haul out. So if weather or lack of time won't let me ride,I can still sit in the barn and listen to the girls eat their grain.
I have given up on hauling to barrel races because I just can't motivate myself to it. If I get to trail ride or just train in my pature will have to do until I have more time to do more.
I do treat myself to a clinic once a year to hone my skills and have an awesome time each trip. |

Location: CA | Kasaj... I get that. I was totally undermotivated for a couple of years. I would venture out once in a while, but my head and heart just wasn't in it. After yesterday I have the old addiction back again. :) But I can't imagine my world without horses in it.
For those with back problems, look in to Chi Machines. Most Chiropractors have them. It seems kind of weird that just movig your legs back and forth can do any good, but it has kept me going for a few years. I only see my Chiro now if I acutally crash... or something. lol (of course, it depends on what is wrong with your back, I have a couple of bad disks in the lumbar region and it really seems to help. )

Location: BFE, Idaho | I will be 50 in two years, I was raised showing hunters, and then life changed me over to western after about 20 years of struggling with the going fast thing, I stopped trying, then I ended up with a 'show' horse back and now getting ready for my first show season this summer in over 22 years, I am stoked, but it is taking me forever to get my core back...(and need to loose all that non riding weight!)
I do not think I will every do colts again, but I am enjoying my finished 14 year old steady eddy.I plan to show until I just fall off and die. |

| I am 56 and didn't start running barrels until I was 44. I have noticed my back hurting more when I ride but I can't imagine the day when I can't race. I cheered June Hollman at the NFR. She is an inspiration to all of us! I have also ran Senior Rodeo in the US and in Canada. The 50s and 60 are very tough running! I spent a year and a half healing a broken arm. The longest year and a half of my life!!!!! |

Location: CA | ~~Horses with sound minds, big hearts and great spirit, Stand near the gate so my name I can hear it. Fly to the first like my horse has wings, These are a few of my favorite things. Secured my pee pad in case I might tinkle Don’t need much bling, I don’t care if I twinkle Can’t see too well, things are quite blurry, We seem to have flown we are at the first in a hurry. Horse is quite broke, turned on a dime, Flying to second, we’ll have a good time!
When the third’s done, and the time is in And I’ve completed my run I simply remember my favorite things I can’t wait to have more fun! (to the tune of my favorite things)

I'm older than you-started running barrels again bout ten years ago. My back hurt me just bout every day I rode-just thought it was due to my age. I bought another saddle and my back no longer hurts. i ride 3 to 6 days a week about an hour a day. |

Location: Texas | I'm older than you..... I didn't run barrels for close to 10 years. I was just getting back into shape, working out and getting stronger when I had a very bad buckoff. Broke my C2 spinous process, collarbone, rib, and 2 small thoracic vertebral compression fractures. Can you tell I landed on my head? So after about 6 months of no riding, I am healed and riding again. I know my limitations. I really don't have that burning desire to compete, but I do enjoy training the horses. I have a young daughter who can ride behind me, and that's good enough for me. Meanwhile, all my friends have retired and we are riding together, trail riding, etc. and having a ball.
