Location: Central Montana | I'm headed down at the end of January for a week long date with a Carnival cruise ship headed to the Caribbean.
I've read through the Cruise Critic boards and taken in all the suggestions. Some of them are just not appealing to me personally.
For those of you who have been there, what do YOU like to do when you visit? I'll have 2 1/2 days to play tourist.

Location: SE Louisiana | If you look around, you may be able to catch an early Mardi Gras parade. They should be starting to gear up for it pretty close to that time. |

| So many things! Fun and different shops on Royal Street. Take a mule and buggy tour of the French Quarter. There is so much history. You definitely need to eat at one of the recommended restaurants. If you have time take a ride on the streetcar down St. Charles Ave. to see the beautiful homes and large old oak trees. Have some coffee and beignets and walk through the French Market. For hundreds of years farmers have brought their produce there and still do. Also make sure you see the inside of the St. Louis Cathedral. |

Location: Dubach, LA | I have always wanted to visit the cemetary and Marie Laveau's grave. You must have coffee at Dumonde's and buy some pralines or you ain't visited New Orleans. Be sure to have your picture made with one of the local cross-dressers. Take change to toss to the street children who perform in the Quarter. |

Welllllll.......We may have to visit the cemetary just to say we did it......my sister used the song Marie Laveau for a bridless freestyle a few years ago. I think that would be fitting.

Location: Texas | It can be scary if you get out of the tourist areas. I grew up close to there and you will be fine. The cruise terminal is right down from teh French Quarter. Walk the French Quarter have Beignets at Cafe Du Monde, Tour Jackson square, tour the cemetary, mardi gras warehouse, world world II museum is there. You won't be bored. |

Yes it is that rough. Always know where you are and who is around you. The news tonight told of over 60 vehicles that had windows shot out overnight. It can be a dangerous place. Just be very careful.

Know where you are and who is around you is good advice. New Orleans is no worse than any other big city. Just use common sense. The tourist areas aren't that bad. If you are there to get drunk and stagger around late at night, you will be more likely to have a bad experience. The crime statistics are mostly gang and drug related. Again, if you're not driving around bad areas late at night looking to buy drugs, you likely won't have a bad experience.
As someone else mentioned, the history in the city is awesome. The zoo and aquarium are really nice.
And the car vandalisms were across the river on the westbank, in Marrero, not New Orleans. The tourist areas are safer. |

Thank you for saying it's no worse than any other big city. I am a native New Orleanian and although I know the crime is bad, and it is mostly drug/gang related, it still upsets me when people bash the city that is my home. Maybe I shouldn't take it personally, but I will always defend my home turf.

| we went there for a week --my BIL lives there..we basically partied and got tattoos all week...
just as with any other big city-- be aware of your surroundings and the people around you..be safe..have fun..
i do remmeber a bar called daqaries (sp) and cream that was pretty fun --redneck style

A Cool Sharp One
| We were just there in July and had a pretty good time, just wish there was more to do at night than just "Bourbon Street". But we did take a tour that took us to the cemetery, thru the Garden District and stopped at a really nice park and even saw where Katrina broke thru at the levy. Also took a street car and walked around the Garden District and thru the cemetery which was really nice.
We did take a day long tour of two plantations, Oak Alley Plantation and Laura Plantation.
For an awesome dress shop, go to Dollz & Dames it is Decatur Street, awesome vintage shop.
There is also Harrah's to do some gambling and the river boat ride w/dinner was nice.
Sorry I did not care for the Benet's, little dry tasing for this southern girl, was better with syrup on them. |

| It is one of my favorite places to visit! Good food, good drinks, so very entertaining. I just have a ball walking around from shop to shop and seeing things that you just don't see anywhere else - like VODOO shops - how cool! I hope you have fun - just be aware of your surroundings - oh you have to have a Huricane when you are there - YUM!! |

| Eat!!! They have some of the most famous restaurants in the US located there. Aquarium of the Americas, The Confederate Museum. The French Market. There used to be a bunch of stores and a culinary school in the old Jackson Brewery which is right off Jackson Square. |

No worries, traveling alone will not happen. We have a fairly large group of family and friends going together on the cruise, so, we will be playing tourist together or at least in groups as well. We are all booked at the same hotel and have group transportation from the airport to the hotel and then from the hotel to the cruise ship.
I love Las Vegas, so, I imagine Harrah's will get some of my time and my $$$.
Has anyone been to Mardi Gras World? That is one of the things on my list I may be interested in. We are going to be a little early for Mardi Gras itself.
